Why the Hate for this Movie?

Exactly its Dragonball a humour colourful show that was watched by kids on cartoon network, it does need to dark and moody

i, personally, am against making DB dark and moody.....which is why i don't particularly like Picollo's outfit.

Dragon Ball contains a variety of different elements. When all is well the characters seem innocent, cheerful, making jokes, alittle crude humor here and there.

However, Death plays a big part in the story. There is definitely a sense of impending doom when the supporting characters are forced to face a villain who's powers seem to have no limit. In the saiyan saga, we are pretty much counting down to doomsday ,watching the characters spend all of their time training, hoping it will be enough. Their best efforts seem in vein and they are powerless as they watch their friends die one at a time, praying that Goku will arrive and the very slim chance that he'll be strong enough to win.

Several times characters have been so desperate that they committed suicide to try to defeat an opponent. Dragon Ball may be silly and funny but it also has its dark side.

a very good point.

no doubt and i totally agree with you. i'd love to see a DB movie that delves deeply into the more mature themes. however, dealing with death and dark themes doesn't mean you have to make a darker movie. i'm actually glad they haven't Tim Burtonized this movie despite one of Piccolo's costumes practically being all black.

Piccolo is the only thing that seems to be dark about this movie. I agree it shouldn't be "a dark movie" but it should definitely have its dark moments as well as its light hearted ones. Unfortunately, it seems people don't like this medium so much and would rather see movies that are dead serious dark or completely absurd.

It's funny you mention Burton though cuz I wouldn't have picked him for this movie, but I do think his films are dark, with a bizarre humor and quirkiness that kind of reminds me of Dragon Ball; just without the goth look.

About Piccolo's clothing, the body piece looks purple to me. Honestly, I've always seen Piccolo's outfit as black. I know it has a purple tint at times but I've always see that as an artistic technique, like how characters with black hair will have traces of blue in it, but we know the hair is black. You can see this witha character like Venom too, he's black but he's got blue in there too. I hate to sound like a broken record, but I still stand by the manga saying that if something is solid black, opposed to shading or not colored, then it's meant to be black.

I always thought Piccolo was just grey with a purple belt, im glad there making him darker though

so i haven't heard anything about kami bein in the movie, would that make piccolo the creator of the dragon balls than?

I guess, i dont think Kami will appear weve heard nothing on it

hmm, if piccolo turns out to be the won who made the dragon balls, they'd have to explain why he has so much trouble finding them

This could've been one of the most unforgettable, epic fantasy movies of all time. Instead they went for the toned down and more realistic approach, the exact opposite.

I wonder how many decades I have to wait till a studio with balls and a director with a broader vision gets the rights to the movie license?

Ditto.

It really is amazing isn't it...all that incredible potential flushed away because Fox was basically scared ****less of taking a creative risk. Worse is that the template for a silly, far out martial arts fantasy film was more or less already in place with Kung Fu Hustle.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; what's the point of studios getting the rights to these properties if they are going to be so scared of the creative and expensive risks that are inherent with fantasy properties?

I still think Piccolo in this film is an amalgamation of King Piccolo, Kami, and Piccolo Jr.

Goku will train under Roshi in this movie and Kaio-sama in a sequel if there is one.

Agreed.

Well Kami made the balls and hed still have to find them

ya, but he made them for the earth to use, not for himself. and if piccolo made them, he'd meke the dragonballs for himself so...

Dude, I totally agree. I think that's what hurts me the most. That it's so damn obvious that DB is NOT living up to it's potential. People can say that we haven't seen the movie yet so its unfair for us to judge...but we've been privy to pretty most aspects of the story, costumes, etc and from all of this we can use deductive reasoning to see that this movie is falling WAY short of it's potential. In times like these I like to quote Sherlock Holmes "When you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains however improbable must be the truth." And to quote Jimmy Kudo "One Truth Prevails"

These truths are that DB isn't living up to what it should be. Too many of the fundamentals have been changed to cohesively add up to a pleasing DB movie. Ki blasts and cool costumes do not a good movie make.

I'm pretty good at spotting lack luster flicks before they come out and I've got a bad feeling about this one. Leaving Krillin out of DB is like leaving Hadji out of Johnny Quest! I'm not even going to touch on how mundane their making this mystical world by having Goku go to high school...cuz that's what they're doing really...they're making Goku and the entire DB world MUNDANE. Piccolo isn't even GREEN for heaven's sake! That's blasphemy! You can tell the real DB fans from the pretenders, cuz the reals would never make excuses for a albino piccolo.

Where there were limitless possibilities there are now finite and less wonderful ones...:csad:

It's funny how many people here are only familiar with the anime and have never read the manga. If I went into the Batman or X-Men forum, and was constantly comparing the films to their cartoon verisons...someone would probably call me a noob and tell me I needed to read the comics. But hey if you're in the majority I guess that's all that matters right?

Well i agree that it's not as good as it could be, but I still think it'll be good. atleast that's what I'm hoping. but to me it almost seems like everybody was expecting a new dub of the anime cut down to be in movie form. (if that makes sence to anyone)

i agree with most of what you said, DS but i don't consider people who love what they're seeing to be pretenders. JP has his own blog and has been awesome with keeping up updated, along with other members, so that clearly shows that they love Dragonball. however, i WILL say that the people who are liking what they're seeing seem to have lower standards for how a DB movie should be. to them they're just happy a movie is being made at all even if that means Fox is exploiting the franchise. there ARE fans out there that will love everything DB related even if it's DBINO.

When did I say I didn't read the manga? Hmmmm...:whatever:

Honestly, I wasn't expecting a new dub of the manga I was just expecting them to make a live action adaption with the aspects of the anime and manga that can be translated into film. That's what an adaption is. You take what's good and you filter out what's not.

Thing is, most of DB can be fit into a live action movie in a way that will please fans and the average movie goer alike. Goku going to school is completely unnecessary. It's almost become a cliche trend for a unpopular nerd to discover super powers , blah blah blah and you know the rest...

I remember reading the synopsis of the ben ramsey script from a few years back they paid dude like 200k to write it and I thought that was pretty faithful. Krillin was even in it and so was the giant ape Goku. It didn't happen exactly as it did in the manga or anime, but it was really good for a movie, fast forward a few years later and all the stuff I was excited about seeing in that script has been pretty much phased out. And I wasn't just feeling it because of the giant monkey, the story seemed like it captured the spirit of dragonball. So, yeah, im a little peeved that im not going to be seeing the story on screen that made me so excited for this in the first place.

Yes, my friend...you're right.

Forgive me for saying you people who support an albino piccolo aren't true believers, that was wrong of me. I can become quite rabid when it comes to my Dragonball. (I ordered a plethora of merchandise straight from Japan when I was a kid!) :o

I just feel like with the current set up things could have been way more faithful. Should I just accept what I feel is going wrong? Would you be indifferent toward a story and characters you had invested so much of your love, time, money and soul into? In the words of Rorschach, "No. Not even in the face of Armageddon. Never compromise." :dbz:

very noble of you, DS. we all throw our tantrums in our own ways but at the end of the day, we're all here because we love Dragon Ball. we all just want to see what's best for the franchise....we just disagree on what's best.

I'm actually alot more excited for this movie now that I've seen Piccolo. I thought more people would be relieved when they saw him because for a while there I was starting to worry that he was going to be disguised as one of the Jonas brothers until the end of the film.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

i was very disappointed when i saw Piccolo. with the kind of prosthetics and make up they're doing in movies now-a-days, i don't see any reason why his face and head should look so plain and uninteresting. my biggest problem with Piccolo is that it LOOKS like he's wearing prosthetics and makeup. he doesn't look like a creature from another planet, he looks like an actor wearing prosthetics and makeup. it's hard to get excited over those images when we've been spoiled by creature effects like this...

...and that was 4 years ago with a budget of only $66 mil.
