Why the Hate for this Movie?

i was very disappointed when i saw Piccolo. with the kind of prosthetics and make up they're doing in movies now-a-days, i don't see any reason why his face and head should look so plain and uninteresting. my biggest problem with Piccolo is that it LOOKS like he's wearing prosthetics and makeup. he doesn't look like a creature from another planet, he looks like an actor wearing prosthetics and makeup. it's hard to get excited over those images when we've been spoiled by creature effects like this...

I know, man...I know...

I just...I have hundreds of martial arts and sci fi movies and...so many brilliant examples of make up and super heroics. I just KNOW what movie people are capable of these days. I KNOW! and with all the amazing stuff I've seen over the last couple years...I just expected more from piccolo.

I mean, have you seen pirates of the Caribbean? Hellboy? Star Wars? There's absolutely no reason why piccolo couldn't have looked like this!

Even Lorne from Angel looks more authentic and green! Tell me he doesn't look closer to Demon King Piccolo than that pale version they've given us? :csad:

And I know they could've made the dragonball world more dragonball-zy with some of that 300 background magic. The majority of the story takes place in wilderness areas anyway.

But Piccolo Jr (yes that Piccolo) didnt look too alien, he still had a human face, same nose, mouth, eyes. Unlike say Dodoria or Burter that look like monsters.

Piccolo looks like a green human in a way.

They looked exactly the same with different facial features. Like father & Son.

The thing is that Abe character doesn't seem to get alot of facial expression. Even the Hellboy character looks like someone who is just wearing make up just as you say about Piccolo. I think that Piccolo being able to express himself like a human does is important.

Yeah...I know. It makes me wonder what Guillermo Del Toro could have done with this movie.

i realize that Piccolo isn't as crazy looking at the movie Abe Sapien, but my point was that they CAN pull crazy looking characters like Abe Sapien off on the big screen so i don't see a reason they couldn't pull make a more interesting looking Piccolo off while still having maintaining a more humanoid appearance.

you've got a point...putting that much prosthetics on a face is going to take away some of the expression, however, as many optimists will say...they're not trying to win any oscars with this movie. it's pretty clear with the subpar casting that the acting in the movie isn't much of a priority so if that's the case you might as well take advantage of that and give the villain a more interesting and unique look.

but just for the sake of argument, let's say that acting IS important in this movie. most of the action in facial expressions comes from the eyes and as long as you don't cake your actor in prosthetics (ala Abe Sapien) then you'll be able to get some decent expressions and emotions through the eyes. in regards to Hellboy, Perlman's face is pretty much covered in prosthetics because even though he has a great face they still needed to give him a bigger chin, deeper eye sockets, and a more prominant nose and those would look weird if they didn't fill in the rest of his face with prosthetics. he's not wearing thick prosthetics all over his face, but the more prosthetics used on the face the more it hinders the effect of facial expressions.

the difference between Hellboy and Piccolo, however, is that Perlman needed to be caked in prosthetics because Hellboy's look is based on the comic book. movie Piccolo's look, on the other hand, is obviously not based very much on the anime/manga Piccolo and they deviated. even if they kept close to the anime/manga look of Piccolo, Marster's face is good enough to where you don't have to put prosthetics all over his face in order to get him to look like Piccolo.

Dorky was pointing out that Abe is a very complicated character visually that they pulled off with ease. Piccolo is not complicated yet they still missed the mark.

great post....and i would gladly nuke Fox if it meant getting a DB movie with the amount of visual flair that Sin City, 300, or the Watchmen have.

If they had different features, than they didn't look exactly the same.

You misunderstand me. They looked the same in the general sense as in their members of the same race with identical identifying marks. IE green skin, fangs, antennae, etc while Piccolo Sr had higher cheek bones and a more sinister nose. I mean are you a identical copy of your father? I mean in that sense they looked the same.

The company that did the visual effects for 300 & Sin City, are doing the visual effects for Dragonball, are they not?

if that's true than why is dragon ball so... not like what we wanted?

Doesn't mean they are filming the movie in the same way. The reason why Sin City and 300 looked unique is because they did the whole thing with a little set and a blue screen and enhanced the whole image. DB is not doing that so the look will not be similar at all.

I know that this movie has a lot of short comings and even if I am content with Piccolo's appearance, it won't change that we will get a mediocre movie at best. But Don't you think though that Piccolo looks alot like this?

And I know that the acting may not be award winning stuff but I still think that people find it harder to have empathy for characters that are CGI based or have heavy prosthetics. I think that if Abe had died in Hellboy people would have thought "well it sucks that blue guy died but I'm sure there will be lots of cool creatures in the next movie." When Vader dies in Return of the Jedi we get to see the man inside, he's not just a monsterous robot and I think that makes a difference. If Han Solo died, it would have more impact than say Chewbacca.

Piccolo can't show that he was once a man, but he can show that he is capable of emotion and characteristics that humans possess. I think not having heavy prosthetics will help can help with that. And if there is a sequel we don't alot of time to redeem him from evil incarnate to Gohan's saviour.

you talking about cartoon Piccolo or movie Piccolo? if so, then the only reason i would say that he looks like Piccolo is because i know he's supposed to be playing Piccolo. if i didn't know those pix of Marsters as Piccolo were for a DB movie, however, i probably never would have guessed.

i totally agree with that prosthetics hinder the human connection with a character...which is why i stated that Marster's face is good enough to where you don't have to apply heavy prosthetics. once again, i used Abe Sapien as an extreme example of what kind of characters they are able to put on screen now-a-days.

again...i'm not saying that they should have used a lot of prosthetics, i'm just saying that they should have used them more wisely and more creatively. what they've done with Marsters looks to be what would be considered cutting edge creature/character effects for the 90's and most of those don't hold up to today's standards.

pretty much, and who said we need piccolo to be CGI? I would have preferred if they did a green version of what they did for Ron Pearlman in hellboy. Cuz his makeup was brilliant and did you see the way he moved in Hellboy 2? With da quickness!

Imagine had guillermo del toro been the director of Dragonball instead of this whoever he is dude. We would be looking at a Demon King Piccolo more like this...

Oh and I dont think that prosthetics hinder the human connection with a character, I empathized quite well with Hellboy and The Thing. I could totally see the actors beneath the make up.

This is the 21st century so if we don't succeed in making this DB adpation as close to the source as possible its due to error in judgment by those in charge, not limitations of the SFX or make up abilities of the day. I've seen too many glorious examples of movie magic for me to accept that this is the "Best" they could've done.

You know, I thought that after Sin City and 300, Hollywood had learned... I mean, this is Dragon Ball, the most successful comic and cartoon of all times! If you want to have a hit movie, just don't change a damn thing! Dragon Ball is already a proven formula, why do these jerks think they need to change anything?

Yah but this movies gonna have alot of green/blue screen as it is, with the fights and everything.

And the trailer screencaps did look very vibrant.

I think Im gonna go watch my db dvd's all this talk about piccolo is making me wanna see the real deal, ya know...the green one.

Just cause it has a lot of green/blue screens doesn't mean they are using the same cg techniques. It is completely obvious to see the differences between 300, Sky captain and Sin City to this piece of trash.

Quality, time, love, meticulous planning, talented people, etc? :woot:
