Superman Returns Why use the wing of the plane?

Does anyone know why they had Superman use the wing of the plane in Superman Returns? I remember reading something a while back about it been physics or something.

I always just figured it was because he was out of practice. Also, the plane was starting to spin out of control, I imagine he was trying to prevent that by grabbing the wing.

It worked better dramatically. If he had been under the plane, no one on board would have seen him.
