Transformers Will Transformers Trounce the Competition?

It will dude. Reading the latest update of the script via book format- and even now I think this will be the funniest blockbuster of the summer as well.

Wait, the book is out? :trans:

Cool, then you are truly "more than meets the eye". I was asking because i always see you talking PRO Marvel, i mean you even encouraged people to invest in them as you have. It had me wondering with the FF2 comment if you tend to be a little biased concerning non-Marvel material, i see that's not the case. :)

I am pro-Marvel but aside from that I'm a huge science fiction fan, I enjoy comic book movies in general, loved Hellboy, Batman Begins, etc...I like Michael Bay films, I like horror/sci-fi the best. In my top 10 films I think there's maybe 2 Marvel films. In my top 100 there's many more.

Total Recall, Aliens, Predator, Die Hard, Hunt for Red October, Blade 1 & 2, The Thing, Escape from NY, First Blood are probably my top 10.

Yep. Alot of the lines are changed, but still remain intact. If you loved that car dealership scene, you'll DEFINITELY love the new version- it's hilarious! Bernie Mac will definitely be in his element there. It's just a really funny scene, that's why I said it might also be the most hilarious- if this scene is any sign of what's to come with other changes and add-ons.

So comedy, action, adventure, romance- everything you can think of seems to be there.

Hopefully not in that order!!!
Anyway, I was kinda rooting for intelligent sci-fi in there somewhere. :woot:

Nope, not in that order. But, there have been a lot of cool additions to the script. The cool parts of the script are cooler, the funny parts of the script are funnier, the dramatic parts of the script are more dramatic- in my opinion- and I'm only past Sam getting the car from Bobby B so far!

Plus, it's smart sci-fi in my opinion... well, depending on what you mean by that.
I find it very interesting, don't know if it's kept or not, that most technology was in a way backwards manufactured from Megatron. To me, personally, that's just scary- and I'm not you're average paranoid type. If I remember all the details correctly...
If you mean interesting sci-fi ideas, yeah. If you mean really like 'smart sci-fi' as in very advanced, don't think it's that far. But, it has a really interesting angle to it, in my opinion.

I find that Terminator rip idea you speak of recycled and tired. Definately not good sci-fi... at this point. I thought the original (real Transformers) story was way more interesting and relevant to today's times.

Terminator rip??? How?

This is more along the lines of the government discovering a UFO. Backwards engineering it and putting that technology into cars and other electronics without our knowledge about it.

Since when did they backwards engineer a Terminator and put that technology into our cars, video game consoles, TVs, cell phones, Ipods, etc.? Because I am OBVIOUSLY missing a Terminator film if that truly is the case.

As a lurker for almost a year and a half and a poster for the last year, I can say positively that the throngs of people against this movie have just given up and gone away.... most in disgust. I don't blame them. So, what you say might be true... but it's not indicative of anything. Lots of people just stopped caring long ago.

IMO, the largest contingency of fans, which no one would deny is G1 "lapsed" fans (grown-ups)- of which all my friends are though none of them post in any forum- view this movie with excitement but a lot of skepticism. This movie could EASILY strike out. It reminds me a lot of The Hulk... not to mention that everyone I know my age still has the Godzilla taste in their mouth.

Ditto.

Once Bay was announced as the director and the popcorn flick direction they were taking with the film became obvious, rather than trying to hit the ball out of the park with a stunning fantasy film, I and many other G1 fans/friends basically cancelled all expectations with this film.

Frankly I could somewhat say the same thing for FF2. As I learn more and more, my expectations are slowly waning.

You guys are right, this film will probably be a very good summer popcorn flick with lots of action, pretty shots and notsomuch in depth story or characterization (when it comes to the actual Transformers). I will try and enjoy it for what it is...and hope for a better sequel and (hopefully) a director who can see Transformers for what it could be...and that's an epic sci-fi/fantasy franchise.

Seriously, though it's Transformers. If it's fun in the way The Rock and Armageddon was, then maybe it won't be a Mystic River, but why would you want Transformers to be that deep anyways?

The CGI looks to be about the most amazingly believable CGI on the big screen yet - no one has ever seen 25 ft. robots with humanized characteristics battling each other. There will be a huge "wow" factor there for nearly every movie goer.

I was disappointed as hell with Spiderman 3. I could go on and on why that movie sucked. The script was just awful. I have much more confidence in Transformers after seeing the yahoo trailer. The movie won't be the biggest earner of the summer, but it'll do really well.

I never thought it had to be "Mystic River." But I definately expected it to be Terminator caliber in terms of depth. From the looks of it, that's not what we're getting. We're getting magical cubes and magic glasses and dialog that makes "I'll be back" sound like an oscar winning line.

I've been trying to avoid spoilers but, after glancing quickly through the novelization thread, I saw plenty of people who were excited after reading the book.

It's probably that you and I just wanted something different out of this movie. If I get an Armageddon type movie, in terms of depth, I'll be happy as long as the action is what I hope it to be.

One must also consider that ADF is an author. He could have taken the script, and written his own dialog based on it. There is no guarantee that the words spoken in the book equate to the words in the film.

He based his book on the script for the movie - not the movie.

Ok, What depth did the Terminator series have? Or the first one really for that matter? If I remember it involved a machine coming back in time to kill a woman? To change the future? Sorry but thats not really alot of depth. The second one, a newer Terminator comes back to kill the womans son now, to change the future? Not a lot of depth there. The third one, a newer newer Terminator comes back in time to try and kill the same kid again. To do what? Change the future.

Sorry not a whole lot of depth at all in that series. The Terminator franchise was nothing more then a popcorn franchise as well.

Whoa. I don't even know how to respond.

yeah foreal. saying Terminator 1 & 2 didn't have depth is like saying Uwe Boll's movies don't have cheese.

What..wait did I make CFlash speachless. :)

You have a love for the Terminator franchise..we know. You talk about how you can beleave in a learning Skynet and you love a movie about machines that travel threw time. But your having trouble beleaving that all modern technolagy (in the transformers movies universe) came from Megatron. Mind you, he was found when Electricity was coming of age, the car was not a house hold item.

That is what i don't get. Please explain if you will

I'm not saying I don't get the concept. And, no, I don't "believe" in a learning Skynet. But sci-fi is sci-fi. And it doesn't have to be what's called contrived.

And that's what I think this plot is... contrived.... Even worse, because the original Transformers story was a MUCH BETTER sci-fi story and way way way more relevant to today's times.

Would you have been happy then if they remade the 86 movie? Just made it live action? Or taken a bunch of the cartoons and made a two hour movie out of it?

I just don't understand why you can't stand the fact that they wrote a screenplay for it and didn't use the ""SOURCE"" Material like the holy grail. There have been many incarnations of TF that have used the characters names and looked like crap. The TF there showing on Cartoon Network comes to mind. I tried watching that the other night and almost gave myself a migrane.

Just my 2 pennies :)

SCi-fi is much more restrictive than people think. It has to create it's own rules and stick to them. If you stick to your rules, people get immersed. If you break your own rules, people see through it as cheap.

Those of us that grew on G1 think that the rules were written with that show, and everyhting else has to follow that basic rulebook. From a certain point of view Bay's film breaks many of the rules we felt particularly close to.

Now - once we see the full movie, we may discover that the G1 rules do apply sufficiently for us to accept it as fitting in the same universe and playing by the rules. Or maybe not.

For people that don;t have an existing mental rulebook built up from G1 all bets are off. Would they have enjoyed a stronger G1-influenced storyline more? Probably. They will still like this movie if it establishes its own rules and sticks to them.

Did that make any sense?

AYE CAPN!!! AYE!!! :D

I see what your saying and I understand. But how does that make a movie that is entertaining and fun, not that. Just becaues it dosn't follow the "rules" of an 80's cartoon. I can already tell that no matter what happens with this movie, whether its good or not, people are going to come on here and say "OMG, that was the worst pile of Cra9 I have ever scene....I KNEW IT I KNEW IT!!! Bay is the worst."

It just blows my mind is all CAPN.

I wont say that. I have a feeling that what I will say is "that was the awesomest Gobots movie ever! It was soo on-point with almost everything about that cartoon. Everything!" And, I'm not saying that to be glib. But, the plot, tone, robot designs, and story is WAY MORE akin to Gobots, than Transformers.... save for their "names."

So you don't think OP looks like himself or BB looks good for taking a boxy cartoon and making it something that can be "touched" per say?

Those don't look like GO Bots to me, but I don't know much about cars

Optimus looks cool. But its funny you post that pic of BB. He looks EXACTLY like a Gobot. But beyond designs, storywise, this has been discussed to death. Suffice it to say, Transformers (the phenom, the one I and most people watched, the most successful incarnation) was NOT about a magical box.

I think we have both exahusted our opinions on the matters at hand. :) Still buds lol
