With Star Trek's success, what comes next?

If it were to happen, it would piss off fans so much because they would have to deviate so much. Zelda, while rich in back story, isn't much in terms of narrative. The narrative is a guy in green tights running around caves, dungeons, and whale stomaches all by his lonesome. Not very cinematic. They'd have to change a lot.

Not to mention that video game adaptations are, more often than not, absolute fecal matter.

As for Lucas and Star Wars, He won't dare completely remake any of his movies, although if he was promised enough money, I know he'd do it. I could see a sequel to Jedi, or an Old Republic movie, but it won't be anytime soon.

I can't see a Star Wars movie being remade. That just feels utterly wrong. And anyway, why should Lucas do that when he can simply continue to tweek and "upgrade" the movies he already has in the can, which he will do for the rest of his life...guaranteed. He still has Blu-ray to contend with. Notice that once the format started to change, that's when he started blowing out the doors on various DVD releases. I'm sure he's got something special planned for Blu-ray. I mean, we still haven't gotten that ultimate set that has all of the films. And then there will eventually be one that incorporates the animated Clone Wars movie and cartoons, and then we'll finally get one that includes all of the episodes of the Droids cartoon series...and maybe even the ever elusive Holiday special with Chewie's family! You get the point.
If there is anything new for Star Wars, I forsee something that explores that giant gulf of time between episodes III and IV. Maybe even a live action TV show. That's a time when most of the Jedi were wiped out (there are a few that were hiding out), so I think the budget required might be able to be captured by a TV show. We'll see on that one.

As for the next thing in the genre...well, sci-fi has always been strong so I don't see it as it is making a comeback...it never left.

It has and it most likely will, that isn't necessarily a good thing.
I brought this up in the Trek thread a while back.Most mainstream science fiction films are far too conservative for my taste(even adaptations have been on the conservative side like Mimsy were the borogroves)The truly progressive science fiction films a few and far in between.The only one that even springs to mind at the moment is Contact with Jodi Foster.
In the rest,science is the enemy.And the message is always: Don't **** with science because you'll create a Godzilla, A Frankenstein, A Skynet ,A Matrix, A Kahn , A Genesis device , A Minority Report,.etc etc etc

Star Wars was wasted potential until they figured out a clone wars cartoon could help them push merchandise . It's been a long time coming but there should of been a series of films or television shows for older audiences who have been hooked since childhood.

I don't give a **** how classic the OT is. I'd cream myself getting to see Luke vs. Vader in the speed of the PT duels. That said, I'd still rather see a sequel trilogy with the original aged actors. There's just something about an old Mark Hamill with a light sabre that's infinitely badass.

I do not want a remake of the Star Wars trilogy. I already have the Star Wars trilogy I want, so why would I need a crappy remake? As if Episode 1 didn't take a big enough crap on the original trilogy already... Seriously, what purpose could a Star Wars remake possibly serve? Even from a money grubbing CEO perspective, wouldn't it be better to make Episode 7 to sell action figures of a bunch of new characters? Seeing Luke duel Vader Hong Kong style is not worth re-filming the movie for. For the purpose of the story, the Luke vs. Vader duels were fine. The only OT duel I never liked was Vader vs. Obi-Wan, but all you've gotta do is download Adywan's "Star Wars Revisited" fan edit and you're good to go.

Anyway, if you want to talk sci-fi flicks, the two I want are Chronicles of Riddick, 3 and the live action Neon Genesis Evangelion movie. Even though the latter does not take place in space and is about giant cyborgs instead of ships, it's still futuristic sci-fi and kicks all sorts of ass. It's got summer blockbuster written all over it.

Oh yeah, also there's the Metroid movie, which could be awesome if it were in the right hands, or awful if it were in the wrong ones. I wrote a treatment for one a while back that I was pretty proud of, so even if the movie never gets made I'll at least have that.

I look forward to a sequel. I am not a trekkie, so I don't know what would make for a great Star Trek story. BUT I would love to see a new version of Kirk fighting the Lizard man.
I always loved that episode, and it would be so cool to see a new take on that, done
way more wild and vicious.
It would be fun to watch.

Ya know, in all fairness, Star Trek hasn't made a whole lot of money so far.

It hasn't made its production budget back, even with worldwide sales, which means that although it became a critical success,.but financially, it hasn't been a spectacular event. I'm therefore thinking that the future of the sci-fi genre won't be significantly impacted from this, but people will keep the movie's overall quality in the back of their minds.

I think the film would have to break the $400m worldwide mark before it becomes truly a genre trend-setter like TDK or Iron Man.

I'd like to say Aliens and/or Predator, but Fox may have killed both franchises with their two lousy AVP movies, so I dunno.

I'd also like to say Star Wars episode VII - IX but I won't trust Lucas with anything Star Wars anymore.

Since both War of the Worlds and TDTESS have already gotten remakes, how about Forbidden Planet? Or a Babylon 5 big-screen movie?
