I've always had mixed feelings towards Johns. For all his "Silver Age fanboy" rep, he writes comics that are WAY to gory and brutal for my tastes. And every word that came out of Superboy-Prime's mouth was a (not even thinly) veiled slam on Pre-Crisis fans like me. At the same time he brought back a Multiverse, putting most classic material back in continuity at least in spirit. And I do like Hal fine, at least Pre-Crisis Hal, although I like Alan best. He's been good for the JSA mostly, and I love a lot of his Hawkman stuff.
I don't really care about the gore. My main issue with Johns comics work is that it is so unremittingly boring, to the point where I find much of it a chore to read. His recent JSA run was the about as interesting as staring at paint drying and served us up a meal of bloated continuity references, fawning worship over that most ovverated of comics stories known as Kingdom Come with a side order of bigotry
I honestl did not think that JSA could get much worse. Then Bill Willingham came on board. Shows what I know.
And while it's been talked to death I will agree with you on the matter of Superboy Prime. He's an unfunny parody of fanboy cliches with nothing interesting or dynamic about him.
I also get the distinct impression that after five minutes in Johns company I would feel the urge to either strike him or hurl myself under a train.
