TLC was alright. By far the standout performance came from AJ Styles, who continues to be a joy as World Champion and who once again got a cracking match out of Dean Ambrose. I might even say Styles has given Ambrose the best matches of his WWE career.
By now, WWE surely see what they have in Styles: someone who is able to do just about anything and adapt to anything they might want from him, shine against any opponent and make them shine. He goes up against Roman Reigns and has matches so cracking they actually put some gas back in Reigns' tank when he was running on total empty post-Mania (for a little while, at least, it's running low again). Styles brought out that monster bully heel quality in Reigns that would help him get legit over as a top-tier talent rather than the babyface WWE want to shove down fans' throats... making it all the more perplexing that WWE watched those matches and thought, "Yep, Styles is the guy out of these two who ought to turn heel."
But then Styles took to the heel role like a duck to water, and showed that as well as being amazing in the ring he has upped his promo game to be one of the better talkers on the roster. He can do serious fire on the mic, and he can do goofy comedy shtick that's actually funny when required. Then they put him against John Cena and Styles showed he can totally pull off that "Big Match John" WWE main event style.
And while he hasn't perhaps had the best use since being champion, he's still excelled with what he's been given. He actually made people care for and sympathise with a one-note joke character in James Ellsworth. And like I say, he's brought the best out of Dean Ambrose. If the rumours are true and he's gonna face The Undertaker at the Royal Rumble, that could be the final test. If Styles can show he can also get entertaining "special attraction" matches out of part-timers and non-wrestlers, he truly is the man who can do everything. All this and he's widely regarded as a nice guy, popular backstage, with no issues making him difficult to work with. He's surely guaranteed top spots on the big cards for as long as he can go and wants them.
