This is a very downbeat movie. Grey skies, rain, and a moody, ominous atmosphere throughout. It's played less like a superhero film, and more akin to something like The Ring with Naomi Watts.

I noticed the constant dark lighting and overcast weather too and it made the movie feel a lot smaller in scale for some reason. Nearly everything happens in close walled sets. In the Xmansion, at Jeans dads house, inside the space shuttle, inside the train at the end. Makes the movie seem to claustrophobic and minute when it should feel more upscale

Sounds like the first two Singer x-men films.

I rewatched X2 recently and I swear like 75% of the film takes place in hallways.

I (and my bf) like it. 7,5/10 (so, better than X1, X3, Apocalypse and First Class level)

This year i saw only other 2 cinecomics in theatre: IW and Engame and i put DP a little lower that IW but better than Endgame.

It's very pity that once again critics in usa show they fear so much the superhero genre to accept only a disney-like vision that is so inoffensive and family like (that is not a bad thing, i love see movie in family) creating a sort of ghetto where they can gratify the fanbase without harm their authorial movies.

All the 2/3 of movie is very brillant and it is what i really search in X-Men: borderline characters, drama, inevitable destiny.

I very like the dialogue, cause while in Disney we have witty repartee, but that said nothing about characters, there they take the time for answer, there is a good use of words, silence and acting (that means that the dialogue pass also through the silent face).

Charles is really demystified, more than in DoFP and that character is the one i love more in this movie.

You can see Turner is not a the same level of others, not that she is bad, but she has not the presence/charisma to hold completely the role.

The space scene is amazing and generally thare is a great work by dop that we don't have in disney.

Score is very great.

Then arrive the third act that was the weakest. Yes, ok, good action, but Kinberg seems to lose the control all over the seeds he put in first two act
1.Charles was forgiven easy,
2.Aliens' motivation fade off
3. the politic issue
and above all, i was waiting for Jean really make something bad, but really nothing, why don't dare make she destroy d'bari world? that could give a more complex dimension in her and also a more drama in alien-action

and also dialogues lost their realism style and become flat.

Like Logan? A fox Superhero film. Deadpool? Also Fox.

I don't mean Disney's movie. I mean movie in disney stye.
Deadpool is very disney-ish. the greater violence it's not the point.
So Wonder Woman is a perfect disney style movie.

Logan was not submit as superhero movie (and it has the same score of Homecoming, that said much more)

I don't wanna make any war.
I like disney style.

but even if i like sushi, if they close all other type restaurant, i will think it is a problem.

Yep. Logan, Deadpool 1, DP 2, Kickass, Wanted, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, The Daredevil, Punisher, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones Netflix series...critics sure do hate dark superhero films that don't fit in the MCU style.

Except when they don't. And they never have. They typically just like good films.

Now, do I think DP might be getting a harsher rating because superhero films standards are much higher now? Yeah. I really doubt it's worse than Origins. But from all accounts, it's just not a great film. It's pretty average and kind of meh. And that seems to be why they don't like it.

.

I think you have ro read in the othere thread where i explain better.

i said in the last 7 year (when the disney-model started)

and from that list we have Deadpool 1-2 that are disney-style. and the other are serial tv

What?

What????

No superhero movies are 'submitted' as superhero movies. You can't submit "superhero" as a genre.

You're all high.

This is still top-tier X-Men. It's about Apocalypse level or a little better - inferior to all of the Singer-directed stuff or Logan, but on-par with The Wolverine or most of the MCU. Whiney-fanboys gonna whiney-fanboy.

A step down from X2 or DofP isn't necessarily bad, at least this thing's an actual movie unlike the lion's share of the recent DCEU & MCU stuff alike, Russos aside.

So according to you, those that don't share your opinion are "whiney fan boys?" Where do you get off saying that? I thought this forum was about respecting other posters?

The violence in Deadpool is secondary. It'a funny violence, never really hurting.
In italy it was an all-age movie.
For sure i would not bring my little son to watch it, but if you take off the violence you get a very easy-watching movie in disney-style.
What Kael said ages ago for Star Wars IV, it is the core of the disney-style.
"there's no breather in the picture, no lyricism"

Uh.... And what about the first movie where Vanessa uses a strap on on Wade? Does that have to be removed or does that fit the Disney image your claiming?

If you think Deadpool 1-2 are Disney style, I think you may need to do an extensive review of how you evaluate films.

The "Disney Model" started in 08, the same year that The Dark Knight came out. TDK which is still regarded by most critics as the best superhero film ever made, so your logic doesn't track.

The serial TV shows are still Superhero products, that compete with shows that also fit in with the Disney Formula (Agents of Shield for example). And which ones are rated the highest? Netflix.

Critics have no problems with dark superhero films, or superhero films that are different. In fact, they typically prefer them. They just don't like films that aren't very good.

"If you take out the violence?"

If you take out the violence from Passion of the Christ, it's fine for all ages. If you take out the violence from Saving Private Ryan, it would be fine for kids too.

But you can't. It's part of the movie. And since it's in there, that, and the explicitly adult humor, which is integral to the DNA of the film, makes it 100% NOT a film that follows the "Disney-Formula."

Not seen this yet but I for one am glad we will never see JLaw's 'Mystica' ever again!

I'll be seeing this maybe at the weekend or early next week, and I ain't gonna hold back! Fingers crossed there are some good things to enjoy...

Yeah I'd say go see the movie yourself before judging anything. Expected a disaster but it's not. Also I like some nice touch to First Class and Days of Future Past.

My spoiler review:

Alright. So I've had a chance to see the movie. My thoughts: Does it deserve the rotten tomato score it got? No. I definitely liked it better than Apocalypse and X3. But only slightly. Certainly nowhere near First Class of DOFP.

I thought Sophie Turner did an awesome job for what she was given. I did like Kinberg's direction in certain parts of the movie. The VFX were great. The score I felt was awesome. However, the dialogue was wonky. I loved the first half and the world it set up (reminded me more of the x-men evolution cartoon with these younger versions). I loved the space shuttle mission sequence, but it went by way too fast. Clearly the movie has been chopped up to hell and the runtime made too short. After her childhood sequence, suddenly they have to save the astronauts. Not much of a build up. No chance to dwell on their concerns or the dynamics between the team. Just, 'let's go'. The shuttle sequence was great (especially the VFX) but it was too short. I expected to see a little more buildup perhaps before things went wrong for the mission. And maybe a little longer focus on the incoming phoenix force too. And then a little more room to breath and deal with the after-effects of what happened when they got back to earth. I wanted to focus more on the team. I liked Storm/Nightcrawler and wanted to see more dynamics between them, Jean and Scott. It just went by too fast with too little screen time for those characters. I liked Dazzler, but wish they could have done more with her character. They could have intertwined her somehow into the alien plot just like the comic tried to have her kidnapped by the Hellfire Club. Perhaps that would have dragged the movie out in a longer runtime, but this entire film felt a little rushed to me (or at least not focusing long enough on the more interesting bits).

I didn't mind the way the aliens were introduced: lights slowly coming down from the sky. I liked that. I knew they weren't going to be able to do comic version with the Shi'ar. But the aliens in this movie seem completely unnecessary. You barely saw them in their actual form. They could have done a little more with those characters if they were going to use an alien subplot. Like play more on an alien-illuminati thing as a shout out to the secret club of the Hellfire maybe. Jessica Chastain could have done more to manipulate and play with Jean's mind in an interesting way just like Mastermind did. Or maybe they should have left out the aliens all together due to the short runtime and focus only on the dynamics between Jean and the team to give that more screen time.

Turner's performance to me was fantastic. I felt they clearly could have used the fire effect more around her than just the cracks in her skin and flowy hair: like added a little fire to her hair or seeping off her body. Make her physical transformation a little more dynamic throughout the movie instead of just leaving it up to the very end right at the climax. I felt she could have done more in the movie to illustrate how much of a danger the power that she's struggling to control can be: such as have her destroy a city or small town which might have made a stronger impact in the story if they weren't going to show her destroying a solar system. I loved the action of the fight at her childhood home but wish they did more to utilize the other x-men. Again, it was too fast. They also could have had the x-men fight Jean at the park spilling into the city streets instead of Magneto's band. I didn't like the third act. Everything about that part felt rushed including the VFX. From when the train landed....all the way through Jean taking Chastain into space....to Jean destroying herself....all happened within the span of 5 minutes. I knew people weren't going to be happy with that when I saw the leaked ending and thought to myself, "hmm. That's a little fast." So yep. I loved the look and the tone of the movie (it could have been rated R). I loved the first half and the action. The seeds were planted for a great movie, but it just didn't reach it.

But who's to say it "should" feel upscale? It's an adaptation, and interpretation of a comic book. The scale is what it is.

That claustrophobic feeling could very well be the actual intent of the filmmakers. It can act as a metaphor for how Jean feels inside of her own mind and body. Being constrained and restricted could be a theme worked into the subtext. It's a style and an atmosphere. Just sayin... you have to look at each film for what it is and who made it.

I believe a lot of her choreography...again...was cut. Don't know why they kept doing that.

Because Kinberg and Fox are disrespectful like that. It is like they refuse to listen to what the fans have been asking for the past 19 years. I was willing to give Kinberg a chance since he has gone on interviews saying how much he has learnt from Last Stand but after watching Dark Phoenix, it is clear that this hack knows nothing about X-Men. I am not even an avid MCU supporter but I just want the property to go back to Marvel now so that these lead characters (Storm, Rogue, Cyclops, Emma) can be given the proper treatment they deserve.

It's a Jean story so I think the main focus should be on Jean. Storm has great action scenes but yeah, she will definitely have better arc in the MCU.

I posted in the main thread. 6.5/10 for me.

Visuals, sound were really top notch. Sophie was just amazing. You can tell she tried. Michael and James hold their ow as usual. Jessica tried her best with what she was given. I will watch it again just to get a better vibe overall but I really don’t rate it worse then Apocalypse which was just a mess from start to finish. This felt clunky in bits like typical Kinberg but I found the pacing was better then Apocalypse. Of course could’ve been much better. But I’m glad to me it wasn’t much worse. I would say still see it and go in and make your own opinions of the movie. Don’t let the critic score sway you.

I just watched and it was fine (I don't think it spectacular but definelty don't agree with the RT score).

I think Sophie did great, not even just with "Phoenix force manic" scenes but her acting in the more smaller emotional scenes. Especially in the scene in her childhood home.

The action and power use were great. Nightcrawler was a stand out for me throughout the film, and I really liked the "combative" style Magneto used in the train sequence.

I think my major issue is the pacing due to short runtime. It works well up until "you know who's" death and then it just rushes (hopefully we get an extended edition with home release; just to let it breathe).
I think that hurts the Chastain plot the most. I think it would have worked better if there was time jump showing jean and Chastain having formed a relationship with Chastain teaching Jean to control and embrace the force; while manipulating her and turning her against the X-men.
