Comics X-Men: Emperor Vulcan

Is the dialogue in these pages supposed to be funny?

"Attention Shi'ar Warbirds. You would be wise to surrender now."
"NEVER!"

"I'm pretty sure he was talking to you, Rachel. I stopped being crazy months ago."

I laughed at Polaris's quote to Rachel.

It's more or less a metafictional quip about how writers have portrayed Polaris up until Brubaker.

shoot Id like to know WHAT Lorna's powers are. We got a whole year of her and all we were able to make out was that she could shoot green things from her hands. What exactly was that all about

They're like Sunfire's legs and Gambit's black skin(not sure what happened to that)

I loved the Polaris quote about not being "crazy" anymore... this book is starting to look good, and the first issue isn't even in my hands yet... I really can't wait.

This first issue was freakin' amazing, and I say that Yost should have written the entire arc of "Rise and Fall," if not "Deadly Genesis" as well.

The dialogue is spot on. Yes, there are humorous little quips that are rather metafictional in a way - and by that, I mean that the characters seem to be making comments about how they've been written. There's another quote later on by Rachel about kissing Korvus that's rather funny too. Overall, there's a great mix of tongue-in-cheek dialogue and serious dialogue, and each piece of dialogue does a great job of moving along the story and creating the setting.

The story moves at a good pace, and I assume it probably will continue to, so the five issues should move along nicely and work out well. That's speculation, of course. But it looks enjoyable and fairly epic. And while I enjoyed "Rise and Fall," it of course had flaws, and Bru never quite made it epic. Read again my opening statement.

And the artwork is fantastic, although Polaris really needs a change in costume. Seriously. Though the colorist makes Havok's outfit look awesome.

Oh, and Havok leads. And has issues. That's right. About time.

No, I know HOW she got her powers. I want clarification on WHAT they actually are. All we've seen is her shoot green things out of her hands, but it has never been stated on what that actually is. Is it magnetic like before? energy beams? The status of her powers right now are very ambiguous

Wait..Yost wrote something good? did anybody die?

Doesn't seem like anyone did, but you never know.....
I mean they did blow up Vulcan's ship in issue 1 of this limited... and I mean I guess it's possible someone like Deathbird could die from space 'cause honestly I can't remember but so far it APPEARS no one has died....
which actually almost killed me in real life.

From the looks of things, Yost might be the lesser of two evils.

perhaps its Kyle then that likes to kill kids....

Hey Spec..help me out here..havok wants to know WHEN exactly Polaris's powers were stated to be magnetic...

Seeing as how she had control of magnetism during the ENTIRE Shi'Ar arc and also in the first panels of this mini...remember..the Shi'Ar being caught in an electromagnetic field....WHO ELSE would it be if NOT Polaris?

I love your sarcasm.

Hi Chris, thanks for joining us this week. Let's start things off by talking about "Emperor Vulcan" (light SPOILERS from issue #1 follow). In the first issue, one gets the sense that Lorna is getting a bit sick of Alex's inferiority complex. Is there a confrontation a-brewing?

After the first issue, the series is actually called "Lorna beats up Alex." The Vulcan stuff was just to get people in the door. Is Lorna sick of it? Yes. And so am I. And so are you. Alex Summers is one of the most powerful mutants on the planet, one of the "12," an X-Man, he led X-Factor, he did crazy stuff in "Mutant X," and generally kicks @$$. So if we need to slap Alex around a little to get him up to snuff, then we shall.

As we've seen from your "New X-Men," you're a pro at "slapping" mutants into shape. In this book, we also see Alex say that he wants to kill Vulcan. Is Alex a killer? Isn't that a line the X-Men don't cross?

Excellent question. Alex would have killed Vulcan in the last chapter of "Rise and Fall," in the heat of the moment. And as we saw in that chapter, they "quit" being X-Men with their murderous intentions. Who's to say what he'll do, given time to think about it. Oh, wait - we say in issue #5.

Korvus and Marvel Girl's relationship is already done by issue one - or is it? It seemed very sudden to introduce it in "Uncanny" and then have it gone by the first issue of "Emperor Vulcan." Is there more romance coming?

Yes, but it's Korvus/Ch'od.

Um…ew. What would you say Vulcan's ultimate goal is? He killed his mother's killer. Does he really want to be a ruler? It doesn't appear that he enjoys this position too much at the beginning of this series.

Vulcan is not the most mature young man. His motives are decidedly immature. He had a very romantic view of becoming Emperor, in the sense that he saw the power and glory, not the day to day. He also assumed that the Shi'ar would accept him on that legal technicality. The reality didn't sit well with him - the Shi'ar in general are not fans of humans.

Vulcan's immediate goals were: Revenge on the Shi'ar. Kill Xavier. He's one for two, but now finds himself distracted. He isn't interested in being a ruler per se, but the arrival of the Scy'ar Tal changes things. Sometimes we don't care about things until they are threatened.

Any chance we'll learn more about Ch'od or Raza Longknife in this series? They're fun characters and I'd like to learn more about what drives them, especially in light of Corsair's death.

Ch'od and Raza are fun, and we'll get moments here and there with them as well as get their views on the Shi'ar, but the focus is on Havok, Polaris and Marvel Girl dealing with Vulcan.

I suppose that makes sense, given the title of the series. So the Scy'ar Tal that showed up at the end of issue one - are they someone new? Have they been seen somewhere before? And, just out of curiosity, will any of the events of "Annihilation" have any effect on this series (or vice-versa)?

They're new…and old. The Scy'ar Tal have history with the Shi'ar, a history most Shi'ar aren't even aware of. They have a legitimate beef with the feathered aliens. They have not been seen before. And to my understanding, the Conquest is limited to the Kree Empire right now, so no sign of "Annihilation" in "Emperor Vulcan." But who wouldn't like a Havok/Nova team-up?

Sounds like you have your next miniseries right there!

Yes, definitely the lesser of two evils.
