X-Men - Part 4

I have been reading all my X-Men stuff, trying for a chronological order.

Read New X-Men volumes 1-7, haven't read in years. Great stuff. Cassandra, Quentin, Weapon XV (and Fantomex!), the return of Magneto. Astonishing X-Men vol 1 and 2, Wolverine: Enemy of the State, and Evolution. Pheonix: End Song. Reading my issues of Astonishing, 13 to the Giant size finale. Then X-Men The End Part 1 and Old Man Logan.

Can't wait to read the end of Astonishing again. Need to pick up Pheonix Warsong and The End parts 2 and 3. I read my House of M stuff a while back, and skipped my early 90's books.

I am enjoying following Cyclop's arc, knowing what's in store for him in AvX. The Pheonix seeks out Cyclops in Endsong...maybe a bit of forshadow there. Any stories I should read between where my X-Collection stops and AvX begins?
Deadly Genesis*
Rise and Fall of the Shi'ar Empire*

Messiah Complex
Emperor Vulcan*
Divided We Stand (Uncanny X-Men)
Divided He Stands (X-Men Legacy)*
X-Force: Angels and Demons*
Messiah War**
Utopia
Nation X
Kingbreaker*
Necrosha**
Second Coming
Five Lights
Schism

Anything with an asterisk is kinda passable but will give you a broad scope of the X-Men. Deadly Genesis is pretty much the start of the rift between Scott and Xavier but it's consequences aren't really followed within the main story. It leads in the Rise and Fall which is when handful of X-Men are lost in space and continue their own adventures as Starjammers. Messiah War is marked double because even though its part 2 of the "Messiah Trilogy" it's absolutely pointless and inconsequential to Hope's main story. Necrosha was another big crossover, but again totally passable. But if you do decide to read and pick up the trade, do yourself a favor and look online the reading order cuz all the trade does is bunch up each series separately and totally ruins the flow of the story.

Thanks guys.

I have Deadly Genesis, I read that with my House of M stuff. If there is more to the fallout between Cyclops and Xavier, and the move out to SanFran, that is of interest I'd like to follow up on that. I had the Messiah Complex TPB but I think one of my old room mates jacked it.

I gotta get RaFotSE, passed on it when it was coming out because I wasn't fond of the team line up, but in retrospect, with all the Brubaker stuff I have passing that up was dumb.

I think I will break out my Nightcrawler 1 - 6 and read those again to. Him and Cyclops were always the best. Great covers on that book.

.
Xavier and Scott sorta made peace in X-men Legacy 215-216. Xavier rejoins the X-men and Utopia in the Utopia story arc and his relationship with Scott is featured in Uncanny at least till Schism. Its rocky but but better than it was around DG

Wow; the X-men relationships are really in a shambles. Interested to see what they do with the Original X-men in the present. Colossus and Storm are losing it.
As a Colossus fan I hope this proves to be good;

Colossus is obviously wanted because of AvX, but I wonder what the deal is with the others.

Maybe they arent but the fact that they choose to take Colossus in ad that would make them guilty by association as it would be harboring and aiding a fugitive. Cable isnt one to care for the rules and wouldnt care about what the Avengers think he chooses to want Piotr on his team if he feels he can be a benefit to him. Its kind of how the original X-force were wanted fugitives during X-Cutionr's Song simply bc of their associatio with Cable, not necesarilybc they did anything wrong themselves

Cable and Forge are coming back from the dead, but Banshee and Nightcrawler continue to fertilize flowers? There is no justice at Marvel. There's just us betrayed fans.

I liked Banshee in Generation X but I don't think the X-office knew what to do with him after the X-Corps thing.

AoA Nightcrawler, X-Treme X-Men Kid Kurt and the Bamfs in w&txm are all running around 616 Marvel so its hardly like Nightcrawler is gone.

Random little blue teleporting men are no substitute for Kurt's winning personality. You can't beat a devout Catholic demon Gypsy with an Errol Flynn fetish.

I know some people don't like Bendis, but his and Immonen's run on Ultimate Spiderman was amazing and went for so long. It's enough that I do plan to pick this up, just to see if it's any good. :)

I seriously doubt anything will happen to Jean. She obviously can't die because that would change history. And I'm sure marvel knows that they have to treat her right because her fan base would kill them.

I really don't think All New Xmen is going to be bad. Bendis is strong at writing teenage characters, and he can actually give the O5 personality. And I do think the premise is interesting, and a lot of people knock it because of Bendis.

The concept is an interesting one but one that seems like it would be best suited for a mini, not an ongoing. Shoudlnt the O5 coming to the present create a time anomaly? The only story I can think of characters from 616's past coming to the present was in New Mutants: Truth or Dare, but at the end of the mini, the kids were sent back in the past with Karma erasing their memories

This is Bendis we're talking about.....logical thinking goes right out the f**king window.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!! Ohhhhhhh, that was a good one!

I'm looking foward to some Jean and Emma confrontation.
Thing is Bendis is a very good writer, I think after Dark Avengers he just got lazy and went down hill.

Sorry, but Bendis jumped the shark waaaaay before Dark Avengers.

Thing is, he's not a bad writer, he just sucks, like a lot of writers these days apparently, at writing established characters without changing everything there is about said character to fit the story he's trying to tell. And that, is bad comic book writing. Which means if you never read anything with the X-Men in it, you'll probably love it. If you have, then you'll probably hate it. That's kinda the way it goes.

Thank God he's moved over to the X-Men. :o

My problem with Bendis is that he can't write stories with a larger scope very well. The runs he gets the most praise for usually deal with very personal dramas and danger on a small scale. The moment he tries to handle something bigger, he either nerfs his more powerful characters or leaves a few gaping plot holes. He was never suited to write a book like The Avengers. He sure as hell should've never been allowed to get his hands on Dr. Strange.

I'm still not going to read his X-Men, but I can at least take comfort in knowing that he couldn't possibly do more damage to them than most other writers post-Nation X. Plus the X-Men is a team that can easily be used for small scale stories. They have been in the past, anyway.

You know you probably just threw down the gauntlet to him to do just that, right? :p

You're probably right. But Bendis is gonna have to pull something completely insane out of his hat if he wants to top himself after nearly destroying the franchise in House of M.

^Oh god, yeah, Manic, you realize Pandora doesn't go back in that box, right?

What've you done!?

I've already abandoned ship. Good luck, anybody foolish enough to spend money on the X-comics in the near future!
