My vote goes to X-men just based on the first two films.

And they were totally cashing in on the matrix effects (something every studio did for about two years). Mystique doesn't glide around defying gravity! No one's ever disputed storm's lack of character development. Senator Kelly turning into...WATER!?!??? ...I mean, "okay, that's much better than Reloaded"...

The matrix is classic sci-fi. X-men is not.
A giant bubble that turns people into mutants? Lame!

GL1 said:You overstate my point. X-Men is a high quality franchise. The actual quality of the film is definitely a factor in it leading this pole (of course), I'm simply suggesting that a general love for X-Men in general is an equal or greater factor.
While there are certainly some who generally like the X-Men franchise more, (I for instance, as an X-Men fan, prefer the Hulk movie to X-Men 1 or 2 everyday of the week) I simply feel that most of the favoritism is due to the X-Men mythos, not to anything notable the actors or filmmakers did.
I could be wrong of course, however, my point, due to the nature of motivation and polling cannot easily be proven true or false. Even if every polled member spoke their mind, it doesn't prove their actual motivation, especially since motivations for preferences are often hidden from the prefferer, much less the poller.

The Matrix - *****
X-Men - **
The Matrix is a perfect 5 star in every way. X-Men had snippits of parts or performances that didn't suck. No glue to hold it together.
The Matrix: Reloaded: ****1/2
X2: ****
The Matrix Reloaded. Also perfect 5 star in every way. Sadly, the film is not a complete one, and the need to have it not end leads to a question in the grading. Had the resolution been as great as the start, then it would obviously be a 5 star all the way. This was not the case, so it's knocked down half. X2 also has problems with it's end. Namely, it drags, and it lacks.... something. I really can't quite place it, but the bits at the base just conjure up feelings of X1 for me- and that's never a good thing.
The Matrix: Revolutions: ***1/2
X3: Bad vibes, yet unfair to judge at this point, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and call it a 4 star, just for arguments sake: ****
The third Matrix pushes the SFX and the performances given by the actors over the past two films to perfection. Unfortunately, this time, the story fumbles in a big way.
So, adding them up, even with a generous 4 star for X-Men 3, you get the following:
Matrix: 5 + 4 1/2 + 3 1/2 = 13
X-Men: 2 + 4 + 4 = 10
Matrix is the clear winner, even with me being overly generous to what I feel will be a bad film, X3. Look at it this way... even if X3 is a perfect, 5 star film, then it can go toe to toe with the first Matrix(except that it really can't, because damn near nothing can.) Let's put Reloaded and X2 on the same level, again, for arguments sake. So the question would come down to, what is better, Revolutions or X1... and even with it's story problems, it is clearly Revolutions.
No matter what you do, Matrix wins it.
