Xbox 360 Failure Rate Reaches 54%

I just got the RRoD E74 error and Microsoft refused to cover it so I had to get ahold of a supervisor at customer support and rip his head off and they agreed to fix it for free. As soon as I got the RRoD I canceled my Xbox live subscription so what does Microsoft do? They go ahead and pull the money from my account for a whole new year of XBL 2 weeks ahead of when my account was supposed to expire. I had to call once more and do a bit of ass chewing to get my money back. I'm going PS3. I've had it with this chicken **** company.

You just have to go to their website and click RROD as the reason you need it fixed and that's that.

I did and they said my warranty expired in 07. I didn't have an Xbox in 07. So they extended my warranty to 2010 and are fixing it for free.

It always says your warranty is expired. You just had to choose the RROD option and that's it. Next time, read the fine print before yelling at some poor guy in India.

In this month's GI they responded to a fan's letter questioning the validity of the survey. Since it's relevant to the thread here's their response -

Our survey about console failure rates wasn't intended to make anyone look good or bad. We were just curious about our readers' experience, and a survey is a good way to get a rough idea. We used a third party to conduct the survey and tally the results. Yes, we wrote the questions themselves, but they were exactly the same for all three consoles and contained no comparative assessments (you can see them for yourself at gameinformer.com). It wasn't a web poll (so no one could vote more than once), and we received a statistically valid number of responses. Sorry to break it to you, but our survey isn't what makes Microsoft look bad - the company's persistent inability to make a reliably functional system does.

You would of thought, with all this RRoD stuff, that Sony would have been able to over take MS's system by now, yet, they havent.

It is strange that people keep buying a console that is pretty much guaranteed to break. I guess it was mainly about price points, it'll be interesting to see if any shift occurs now that they are equal.

I think how MS handled the situation also helped. Yes it sucks that all their systems are faulty, and yes it took them some time to get on the ball, but they did eventually do something about it and now most people who have the problem don't pay a dime to get it fixed. They even added E74 to the RROD warranty when it started becoming a growing problem.

I don't think the mag should be blamed for the result of the survey, since it is Microsoft's inability to improve the failure rate of 360 that is the problem. The survey just confirms what players have known for years, that 360 consoles are notoriously susceptible to RROD and other issues, even after years of release. It's good that Microsoft is willing to extend the warranty, but that doesn't really solve the root of the problem.

Yea, iv dealt with the RRoD on 2 separate occasions. Both mine and my sisters consoles had the problem and on both occasions it was a really painless process. I mean i went to the website, filled out the info, then shipped it to em. Both times, the system was shipped back to us in about 2-3 weeks. Hers took 2 weeks, mine took 3 and that was over Christmas break. So like iv said before, the RRoD is, at absolute most, an inconvenience.

Yeah. I got the RROD on my first 360 and an E74 on my second and I actually got mine back in in less than two weeks both times. It's really great that they fix these problems for free and get your console back to you in a timely matter, but it says a lot that they have to do it at all.

I guaruntee that the next Xbox will be built like a tank. Haha.

Yea, they deff wont make the same mistake again, but i wonder if there will be any carry over for the next Xbox in terms of consumer concern?

Doubt it. I honestly don't think anyone outside the core gaming audience is even aware that the 360 has such a horrendous failure rate. They simply don't make that association.

No doubt. The 360 was rushed to beat Sony to the punch. They will not have to worry about that this time, because Sony will not bring out the "PS4" for maybe another 3-4 years. If MS wants to put their new system out in a year or two, they have plenty of time to put together something more reliable and not worry about Sony this time.

I'm not so certain they were trying to beat Sony per se. I think they were just trying rush a launch so they would make the almighty holiday release.

If MS wants to put their new system out in a year or two, they have plenty of time to put together something more reliable and not worry about Sony this time.

However, you'd think that Microsoft would try to correct the problem that produces RROD by fixing the root of the problem at the manufacturing plants, but it seems like the newer 360 has the same failure rate as the ones launched years ago.

True that. I think the problem is bigger than just one thing for them to fix. It may be a total design issue. If that's the case and people are still buying 360's with the flaws, MS might just wait to put a new system out instead of redesigning the 360.

Now you've done it. Speaking about it is the 360 equivalent to watching the video from Ring. It's just a matter of time now.

MS wont be releasing a new system any time soon. Itll be at least another 3-4 yrs before we see anyone attempt to drop a new console.

I think its just as simple as they got a little ahead of themselves. They were adamant about being the first "next gen" console on the market and in doing so, missed a few things.

But yea, the orig Xbox was a damn tank, literally.
