Yates to direct bigscreen 'Doctor Who'

ST also had Spock from the other canon in it so it didn't spit in the face of ST fans.

It hasn't happened before and it looks like it won't because BBC just thankfully put their foot down.

Not sure what to make of this, it's clearly conflicting information. I have a feeling there's some kind of struggle going on behind closed doors at BBC and I don't like it one bit.

Apparently Steven Moffat has been posting some tweets that makes it look like he wants to get fired.

Moffat is the Executive Producer on DW. What he says have more credibility than what a non-affiliate like Yates, says. Moffat has a saying on what goes on with the character.

There are bigger higher ups than Moffat though.

BBC worldwide is in cooperation with the movie and Yates.

Sounds like Moffat isn't getting the full support from the BBC

There was this tweet

“Announcing my personal moonshot, starting from scratch. No money, no plan, no help from NASA. But I know where the moon is – I’ve seen it.”

NASA being the BBC worldwide.

But thats probably just about him making a movie. What's more important is what he's saying about Yates NOT making one.
Also there is this quote in the total film article which says the two BBC-parties do talk to eachouther. I'm quite sure if thay have the choice between Yates and Moffat.. Yates doesnt have an inch of rope to cling on to.

Whatever happens, the BBC and BBC Worldwide will work together to ensure that we don't just get a movie, we get the movie that everyone wants.”

The thing is, BBC Worldwide isn't in cooperation with Yates. They've said nothing. Yates CLAIMED that they are behind it. Moffat who actually works for them has said that they are not.

My guess is, it is a bit of a misunderstanding and maybe some internal politics at play. Yates dropped the name Jane Tranter when bragging to MTV News on the Red Carpet. My guess is that Tranter approached Yates and asked him if he could put a pitch together. This by no means indicates that he has actually been hired or that BBC has actually signed off on it. It is just one executive bringing an idea to the table (which is common).

Of course, it could also be a power move by Tranter. Tranter used to control all fictional material produced by BBC. A couple of years ago (2009) she was moved to BBC's Los Angeles office to oversee BBC-A. This was because a lot of the powers that be thought that she had too much power, so they split her job as "Head of Fiction," into four different jobs and basically marginalized the hell out of her. She may be trying to push this movie through to get some standing back.

It seem to me that the talk of the movie occurred without the knowledge of Moffat and his comments is a counterblast towards Yates. I mean, a sticking point in Moffat's contract over his hiring as a showrunner was that he didn't want any movie to overshadow his work on the TV-series.

It's a big possibility that all of this was just talk. But for now, I'm not sure what to make of this.

Moffat elaborates further on his Tweets to Radio Times:

In a statement issued to a national newspaper, Moffat said that Doctor Who is “a vitally important BBC brand with a huge international audience” and one which “not even Hollywood can start from scratch”.

The producer also revealed that as yet “there simply are no developed plans for a Doctor Who movie at the moment” but “if and when the movie happens it will need to star television's Doctor Who - and there's only ever one of those at a time.

"Whatever happens, the BBC and BBC Worldwide will work together to ensure that we don't just get a movie, we get the movie that everyone wants," he added.

The thing is, the woman whose name Yates dropped wouldn't be the one who has any say over whether or not the film is greenlit. She could pitch it to her higher ups but that is about it. BBC WW has not made any announcement, which is odd considering Doctor Who is their flagship property.

I'm looking at this from an Occam's Razor perspective. The simplest answer is the most likely. Tranter asked Yates to put together a pitch to show to the higher ups and Yates got a bit overzealous and ran his mouth about it at a Red Carpet event when in reality nothing has been approved and seemingly no real pitch has even been given yet.

ARGH!

You know, if you lose the big TARDIS sign and Disney's association, that poster and an animated Doctor Who feature could actually be pretty cool.

I am a more nuwho dr. who fan. But i really enjoy the show. When i first heard of the news of a possible big screen film. I was like sweet. Definately would love to see a film. Plus yates is a very good pick for director's chair for the character. But when i saw the news he had no plans to have it connected to the tv show that is a mistake. But with the news i was reading today i am glad it looks like that may not be the case.

I was thinking of the same thing also. It seems to me that Tranter tried to get a movie off the ground with Yates and then he spilled the beans, but the thing is that it didn't progressed further into development.

I have to be honest and I know some people are going to give me evils for this but I was happier when I thought there would be a new Doctor for the movie. It was the best part of the news.

I'm not really into Matt Smith. He's just way too young. It's like he's cosplaying the Doctor rather than actually being the Doctor. The Doctor needs to look like he's lived.

Blasphemy! Matt Smith is tremendous for the exact reason you mentioned. The Doctor has been around for awhile and rather than being a stubborn, spoiled, hypocritical teenager (*cough cough, Tenth Doctor, cough cough*) Matt Smith plays the character like a wise, worldy weary, mad old man. Matt Smith doesn't need to look the age. He acts the age.

Indeed. He's an old soul in a young body.

and whos to say smith would be in the movie. More so if it happens and takes a couple more yrs. Smith could already be over with his run and who ever next takes there place. IF moffat's comments are to be true he said if a film happens it would be who ever is playing the doctor at the time.

Moffats been telling everyone in interviews this

The reports came from a comment by Harry Potter director David Yates, who had claimed to be involved. Moffat continued: "It's not going to be a different version of Doctor Who with two different Doctors at the same time. Of course not, we're not that silly. That would be no way to run a franchise, would it? I'd love it to happen, but that version you heard was just a guy getting cornered on the red carpet and not really being on-message."

See, this changes everything. A canon Who Movie with Smith (or whoever plays 12) in the lead role could actually be pretty cool!

That is weeks old news we known this stuff from moffat weeks ago. When he discussed that yates claims where not offical yet.

How is he killing anything. Moffat was just saying yates isn't official and right now who focus is on the tv show.
