You need to Volunteer.....NOW!

You're incredibly brave, BL.

Thank you.....I think people are really over-reaching into what this programs intent is....it's not asking for a multi-year commitment....I think one of the amendments of the act was asking for 10 hours.....as for it being "mandatory"...I still wonder how that would even be enforced....you have some kids that barely go to school.....

I want to teach the class on interrogating terrorists when a Republican gets back in office.....

'Mandatory volunteer', 'mandatory equal free speech'...yay!?

I thought it was called "Enhanced Interrogation Techniques"

That is what the class will be called when a Democrat is in office....but the curriculum won't be as fun.....:o

Why are all the adults freaking out when this will probably just apply to young people, who sorely need it in this day and age.

Plus all their hard work will go to good use - higher education.

I'd probably say that even though I'm too old to for 'em to get my broke down knees I'm concerned BECAUSE I HAVE CHILDREN!!!!
Expand your perceptions and view the issue from as many angles as you can; analyze and understand it as fully as you can and don't become an idealogue. Taking the "it doesn't effect me directly so I don't care" is the cop out of a lazy "thinker". Invest in your democratic republic and keep her safe from enemies foreign and domestic.

VampElvis, which news network are you from? :P

Serisouly though, we don't need a mandatory volunteer act. I mean, we volunteer enough over the weekends. That house that was set on fire was a blight on the world and that Wal-Mart where all the shelves went crashing over like dominoes needed to be cleaned up for the betterment of the community.

HA! I don't have the face, waistline, hairline, or voice to be affiliated with any professional news network. I don't even think any of the student rags at any of the local colleges would have me!

I'll give you a simple tip which has served me well VE. If you're having a problem with something, not getting the answer you wanted to your questions just follow these simple steps. Go home, take a nice long shower and don't think about it. Get a great night sleep then in the morning go back to the same place/person and ask again this time in a calm even manner, a smile on your face and a gun in your hand. I think you'll find the turn around surprising.

Sacrifice has become a dirty word in todays society is all....I tell people I served in the military for 6 years and they look at me like I just went ******ed...
The Government encouraging Voluntary service is fine. The government forcing any citizen into service is just a little too much. My question is what are they going to do about the kids that refuse to do anything?

The wording on the bill itself is really meh to me anyway......there really is no solid plan in place to make this "service program" mandatory....lots of political figures, the President included, want it to be mandatory....but it isn't....the programs themselves don't even exist yet....there is AmeriCorps (but most people view them to be about as useful as **** on a bull)

that's been my question ever since this bill has come up.....how would this "mandatory service" be enforced when we can't even get some kids to attend school.....?

Here's what you might be missing, the gov already does something like this, it's called school. You have to go, if not a truant officer picks your ass up. Most schools also require volunteer service to graduate.

Kid's are being forcefully educated every day, join the fight to end the abuse and help make all US citizens fat, stupid and lazy!

You will loose some of what you learn if you cut school, true. But if you dodge the Mandatory Volunteer Act, you still win: the schmoes that conformed are dancing like puppets on the strings of the government and you're sitting free and doing whatever you please. At most, because you dodge volunteering doesn't make you lazy or stupid. Suppose one decides to skip out on the volunteering because it would mean a steady block of school-job-study-volunteer-school-job-study-volunteer, etcetera and on and on?

It would seem feasible to me; assuming the above is why you refuse to volunteer, one would not be lazy or stupid. That person would be well educated, working hard, and in need of a break. It would just happen that the Mandatory Volunteer Act gets in the way of that. So you skip out on the volunteering.

See?

So what you’re saying is that if any kid refused to do the Government mandated service there parents should be jailed and/or the kid(s) should be thrown into a Juvenile detention center? I'm all for volunteer work as long as its VOLUNTEER WORK!

Many colleges today are looking for students that have done a large amount of community service. Our students get a special diploma with honors, if they have the grades, AND have done the community service hours required. If they don't, they don't get diploma that these colleges are looking for......

Except we force kids to get an education already but nobody complains about these kids loss of liberty when they are forced to go. In the end middle/high school may be something that they may not like, but can be linked towards making sure that the public good is served by having a higher degree of educated citizens and it betters their lives. If we can reasonably demonstrate that having these kids do civic service is not only good for the community but good for the kids then how is this any different then the public education system we have now?

Exactly. This is America, dammit! We have a right to be lazy selfish bastards!

:hehe: Agreed!

On a related note, I heard a libertarian, who has a podcast called "Radio Free Liberty," say that it's mandatory for a young man to sign up for selected service. If he doesn't, he can be denied certain benefits like government loans for school.

I didn't realize this. To me, this is much worse than Obama's civic volunteer bill. I'd have no problem if they replaced this with the selective service act.

That was used for the draft, since the draft was ousted, it wasn't used for anything else.....

So no one thought too much about it......now they are since there is talk of reinstating the draft....

Rep. Charles Rangel has been trying to get some form of the draft reinstated since the Clinton Administration

I'm pretty sure you get arrested if you don't sign up for the Selective Service.

Exactly, all it does is make you an option in case the draft had to be reinstated. Which if World War III happens it could be a possibility but other then that you would still be measured on what you do for a living. Most people that are going to college or are a doctor or an engineer, etc. tend to be left alone or at least that is what I've heard. It makes sense.

That's a pretty self centered way of looking at it. I'm a little different in that if I believe in something I try and give back. I like living here so I thought it a good idea to actually defend this country that accepted me. Apparently there's nothing of value for a human being in either the military or helping others. Boy I've really wasted my time.

Now I'm gonna say you're just about at the line calling people in the service puppets and suckers and I'm was just about to call you out on it, but really people like you just aren't worth it.

Enjoy your pedistal and I hope you're not too lonely up there by yourself.

Again, I just think it would do this country a lot of good if everyone was required to do say two years in either the service or an appropriate help program after high school. I think giving back more than just taxes wouldn't be the worst thing that's ever happened. And maybe along the way people would get a little more discipline or empathy for others which wouldn't be a bad thing at all. Now I'm saying it'll NEVER happen, people here are far too lazy and egocentric for the idea, but I still think there's some merit in actually earning your way rather than expecting it to be paved for you by others.

As far as the consequences, you make them the same as a truant (expect for the service of course).
