DC Animation ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’: Animated Series From Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves Greenlit

I hate binge watching... but I think I'll have to do it with this one. It'll be getting a rewatch anyway.

I'm so hyped for this!! I'm gonna take my time though. 3 episodes a day.

Yeah, I'm not binging it either.

It's such a special project for me, the most anticipated, so I want to make it last a little.
I'm going to try to limit myself to one episode per day, just like back then with the original show...

The key word here is“try”. :funny:

Just watched the first episode. Will watch more this evening. I’m in. I love the style and vibe of the show and i’m sure the storytelling will get better as it goes along.

The ONLY thing im not in love with is the score. This aint no Shirley Walker, Batman has no memorable theme and the music just seems very generic cartoon music-y. I wish they’d have put a bit more effort there.

So, I just watched the first episode. Pains me to say it but that one was a mixed bag for me. :meh:

I found the story quite flawed:

- How can Oswalda not guess that Thorne is manipulating her by not naming the actual son who betrayed her? Why would he sell his own snitch?
Oswalda should have understood, and it would also have made the next scene much more "surprising" when she killed the real traitor.

- So, Oswalda blows up Thorne's installations from a gigantic cannon on the roof of her yacht, which is also a popular club... And nobody noticed? What?

- Why blow up the police station? Just to silence the traitor and the Gordons?
Why was it too late to let the "inside men" sort things out? This felt like a forced climax...

Visually, it's a pleasure to see Bruce Timm's touch again. But there are a lot of shots that look stiff and/or empty, especially in the quiet scenes...
What really bothers me is that, even though things don't move much, the animation teams could have worked on the colors and shadows to make things a little more atmospheric.
Sometimes, the character and the background seem really artificially put together... And that's not really a budget problem.

Oh well, I remain confident for what's coming next!
I'm gonna watch the second one, but after that, I swear, it'll only be one episode a day like I said.... I can do it ! :funny:

PS: Loved the bat-submarine!

man, she cold as ice.

i watched the first episode. and halfway through episode 2 for now.
i'm liking it a lot so far.

the animation is decent - still doesn't hold a candle to the best animated episodes of BTAS.
it feels a bit too clean - and almost looks computer animated at times to me.
but i can look past this because i am engrossed by the story.

voice actors are doing a great job too.
i love the tone of this - very much a spiritual successor to BTAS.

Yeah, it's been a problem for the longest time with their DC animated stuff for me. Their digital animation just cuts out so many frames, movements, and facial expressions. Nothing has ever come close to traditional hand-drawn cel animation. It's not really as bothersome to me but I do notice it every time.

I enjoyed the second episode much more than the first, and on all fronts!

Simple but effective storyline, some beautiful background and a rather well-done classic noir atmosphere. Some of the shots are really memorable (Clayface's various disfigurements, Batman shoving his finger into the corpse's face in the morgue...).
The animation and overall production just seemed more ambitious and better polished here.
This episode is really not far from what I'd imagined for the series. Pretty cool!

And frankly, even if we don't have Shirley Walker, I find the soundtrack rather effective.
This new Batman's theme/motif fits well with this moodier version, and while it's not the catchiest, it sticks in my head pretty well.

Just finished the whole thing. This, My adventures with Superman and X-Men 97 are best things going on in the genre at the moment.

It's not as good at Batman TAS, but that isn't particularly fair considering that was and still is the pinnacle of the genre. I will say I'd rank it higher than The New Batman Adventures and Superman TAS.
