2008 Academy Awards

I don't know man... I just don't see the big time director, the Hanks, the Denzels, etc... and the two movies that are the leading candidates for best picture are movies that people had trouble finding in theatres... none of them began as nationwide releases if I am not mistaken... I'll still watch but its not exactly the cream of the crop if you ask me.

YOu may not have "the big names" but you have arguablely the best actor ever nominated for a perfomance so that makes it worth watching.

I can see what FaT_tONIe is saying, honestly. This is the first time I can remember not having seen ANY of the Best Picture nominees.

^Ditto:o

Actually, I didn't go to the movies much at all last year. Film in 07 was pretty disappointing.

They should all be playing at the local loews or UA now.

Since when does big names equal quality ?

This is never an issue for me b/c most years the films are later out here and a lot of them aren't the types that i go to the cinema to see.

And it's not a knock on the quality of this year's list, it's just they haven't been films that I've wanted to go out and see immediately. It wasn't until friends told me to check 'em out that I got interested in them, but by then it was just like, "Wait till DVD."

Whats the 5 noms for this year ? i am sure at least 3 of them are of interest to me, last year i only cared about the Departed.

Atonement, There Will Be Blood, No Country, Juno, and Mike Clayton.

The Departed was a crime classic for me the first time I saw it, and Little Miss Sunshine grew on me.

You are obviously a bigger movie guy than I am... frankly... I like everyone else doesn't care less about 80% of the program with all the technical awards no one cares about... but most people watch the Oscars to see who wins those five or six categories... and this crop just doesn't do it for me... DDL is a lock... yeah it will be interesting to hear his speech but that's about it... Javier Bardem just doesn't do it for me... I'll have a better answer for you once I get around actually seeing some of these films... but TWBB is the only movie that I am actually hearing amazing things about. Who the hell is even hosting?

Well i am seeing No Country on Thursday, missed Clayton and Atonement but will get them on DVD, Juno is out Feb 8th here and i want to see that...not interested in There Will be Blood.

Five bucks says this'll be one of the lowest rated Oscar telecasts ever. Unfortunately, no matter how good those five films are, the majority of the country hasn't seen a lick of 'em. And outside of Mike Clayton with Clooney, no major stars in any of them, which you would've had if they had gone with American Gangster and/or Sweeney Todd in that list.

Never, but it makes the award shows a lot more interesting:O

Ha! :D I only check the results out for the main awards and then fast forward the interviews. I just think this year seems to have some excellent work nominated, whether they are stars as such is irrelevant to me b/c i am not really a TMZ person.:cwink:

Interesting, never thought of him as that.

I think his work is brilliant, plus he seems to actually become each character he plays, and has been known to do extensive research for each character he plays.

Really lack luster year this year... I mean last year we had some juice with some big names in the hunt... but this year will be a stinker.

I wouldn't say so, at least it's not going to be what was in 2005, when there was no film worthy the award (even though Brokeback Mountain and Crash were good films, they didn't deserve it). This year wasn't so bad as I think.

P.S. I am going to post my predictions in two weeks or even earlier

I think the Oscar crop is much better this year than it was last year. Last year was very disappointing, with no truly great nominations and one massively overrated winner. So was 2005, where the only really impressive entry, MUNICH, was ignored.

At least this year we have two really great films in NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN and THERE WILL BE BLOOD, both of which are infinitely more impressive than any of the films last year, and better than most films to be released this decade. The only really big misstep this year is how SWEENEY TODD has been neglected.
