2008 Box Office Predictions & Discussions thread

As solid as I think Sex & the City will do (I'll say...$44 million opening), Indy IV will be #1 again because it has the "family movie" factor in its favor. Not everyone can see SATC, and its audience is primarily female.

As someone else said, "Mom will see Sex & the City and Dad will take the kids to see Indiana Jones!"

Hope you're right. It's not like I want SATC to fail, it's just that Indy just did a 100 mil opening, and to be #2 the next week after that would suck, hard.

I would say 40 million for Sex and the Old ****es since they have a huge fanbase but it will be close for Indy. He might do it but I don't know.

Check your local theatre to see how many showings Sex gets. Here's mine here in the Indiana area.

They don't normally put a flick on that many screens if they don't think it won't pull in some numbers. Plus I've been hearing females downtown talking about going to see this, having after parties for it, and all that. It's an event like Iron Man and Indy was for us, man.

Iron Man: 2 Hours and 6 Minutes
Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian: 2 Hours and 24 Minutes
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull: 2 Hours and 4 Minutes

Sex and the City: 2 Hours and 25 Minutes?!?!

Go INDY Go

Fantastic movie. Saw it twice already.

I predict INDY will be in the top 3 at the end of the year

1. Iron Man
2. Indy
3. Hancock

wild spot- Wall-E

With its opening Indy will be the top grossing movie of the year. I see nothing coming on the horizon at least in the summer that will beat it.

Sex and the City will open to $40 to $45 million tops maybe less. How big could it's audience on HBO have been?

All of the cult shows, video games, and comic books you've read over the years, their following would be about half that, but still enough to make a small fortune at the theatre.

SATC actually wasn't that bad of a movie and I'd recommend it... I enjoyed it more than the Strangers, which went nowhere...

I think SATC will make about 55 million. Will it be number one though?

True but most video game movies bomb. As for the comic book movies I don't think they make money just due to the fans. The successful ones pull in people who may not know the characters at all or just have a vague idea of who they are. Aside from fan's of Sex and the City what interest could this movie possibly be to anyone else?

You know that Iron Man had a stronger opening weekend, right? Based on the "biggest opening weekend = top grossing," shouldn't that be #1 rather than Indy?

Indys problem is it has plummeted in its wekedays, its looked at huge drop this weekend; possibly over 60%.

Sex and The City looks headed for over 70 million; 25 million Friday seems like the minimum

That's wrong. Indiana Jones had a weekend opening of slightly over $100 million plus a $25 million Thursday.

Iron Man had a $98 million weekend with a $3 to $4 million Thursday.

Unless Indiana Jones has a big drop this weekend it will beat Iron Man.

Funny how WB is going to profit heavily from a movie that they didn't even make.

Fine, my bad on messing up those opening weekend numbers.

I still don't think Indy will be the top grossing film. The general public seems to be too torn over it, as opposed to Iron Man which has a general accepted consensus.

Looks like Sex and the City will completely crush the competition this weekend with an estimated $26 million on Friday, while Indy made around $12 million

TOP 3 Movies Of 2008

1. The Dark Knight
2. Iron Man
3. SATC

wildcard: Hancock

I predict Indy WILL have a big drop. No way it will have legs like Iron Man. SATC will also not have legs like Iron Man.

Dark Knight? That's funny. I think the only thing, general public wise, going for Dark Knight is buzz from Ledger's depiction of the Joker. I'm a comic book fan and I'm not even excited by the trailers. They just haven't done enough. If Hulk is at least decent, it'll make more.

SATC is not gonna be anywhere near the big blockbuster movies.

Indy also had a 5 day weekend with Thursday and Monday incorporated. 50 million on both Thurs and this past Monday, it's not that surprising that the drop is more than say Iron Man.

The best thing to do with Jones and IM is compare there totals after the second weekend and wee where they stand relative to each other. I think Jones will still be ahead but if it is relatively close IM legs may give it the win.

Well I was totally off with Sex in the City. It did way better than I thought it would but we'll see how it holds up next week. Since this did so well why don't they make a Sopranos movie. It was a bigger hit the than Sex in the City on HBO.

I don't think the Sex and the City people really care about having legs or competing with the big action flicks. They just did this for the fans.

I think it had to do with none of them really doing anything after the show than making it for the fans. It's been 4 years.

The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend. Be sure to check back on Monday for final figures based on actual box office.

New Line Cinema and HBO Films' Sex and the City surpassed all expectations, opening to an estimated $55.7 million from 3,285 theaters for an average of $16,968 per location. The Friday-to-Sunday figure marks the biggest R-rated comedy opening of all time, beating the $45.1 million debut of American Pie in 1999. Among all R-rated films, it ranks as the fifth-biggest behind The Matrix Reloaded ($91.8 million), The Passion of The Christ ($83.8 million), 300 ($70.9 million) and Hannibal ($58 million). The film is also the best opening ever for a live-action adaptation of a TV series, beating Mission: Impossible's $45 million opening. Starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon, the Michael Patrick King-directed pic cost about $65 million to make.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull dropped a respectable 54% in its second weekend to $46 million to bring its domestic total to an impressive $216.8 million so far. The movie was budgeted at around $185 million.

Also performing better-than-expected was Rogue Pictures' The Strangers in third place. The suspense thriller, starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, earned an estimated $20.7 million from 2,467 theaters for an average of $8,393. Written and directed by Bryan Bertino, the movie only cost $9 million to make.

Marvel Studios and Paramount's Iron Man added another $14 million its fifth weekend in fourth to bring its domestic total to $276.6 million. The Robert Downey Jr. starrer was budgeted at $140 million.

The comic book adaptation passed up The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, which had to settle for third place with $13 million. After three weeks, the sequel has collected $115.7 million compared to its budget of $200 million.

In sixth, Fox's What Happens in Vegas earned $6.9 million to bring its total to $66.1 million after four weeks. The comedy cost just $35 million to make.

For Indy to drop only 54% after a $100 million weekend plus $25 million each on its Thursday opening and Monday memorial day is great. Just confirms to me it will be the #1 movie of the summer.
