I haven't really made up my mind which NFL team to support this season, NY Jets or Oakland Raiders. I was a Raiders fan until Al Davis moved the team to Oakland, and as a form of protest I decided to root for the Jets because I had lived in Brooklyn for a couple of years when I was young, so I felt like I have some attachment to a New York team (I didn't root for Giants because my brother was a fan of theirs, and I didn't want to pick the same team as his). I had been waiting to see if Raiders will eventually rid themselves of Al Davis, since he's getting old, but it looks like they'd probably get him a drug that turns him into a zombie so he can rule Raiders forever, so I'm contemplating returning to a team that got me interested in NFL.

If I had to choose absolutely between the Raiders or Jets...I'm going Jets.

Go with the team in New York that actually wins. Who cares if your brother is a fan? Unless you guys are mortal enemies, of course.

Go with Oakland. They play in a weaker division and, IMO, they have a much more attractive group of skill players. In 2009 I will take Russel over Sanchez - Sanchez is the front runner for the next QB bust. Bush-McFadden-Fargus > The 30 Year Old Holdout (Thomas Jones), a kick returner and Shonn Green. Oakland's receivers are also stronger, IMO, than New Yorks.

Be a rebel, take the superficially less attractive pick. Go Oakland.

Local radio is reporting Braylon Edwards to NYJ for Thomas Jones

That would be...like the worse trade ever.

A 30 year old running back is exactly the sort of upgrade the Browns need to Jamal Lewis

Trade Edwards to Oakland for Bush and a WR.

How? Who trades a legit number 1 receiver in his prime for a 30 year old running back?

If Thomas Jones was 24 and coming off a Pro Bowl season, this trade would make sense.

By rule running backs are less valuable than wide receivers.

Jones was a Pro Bowl RB last season. He's an upgrade over Lewis, despite what Jones' age is. The Browns get something that they didn't address in the draft as well. The Jets get a Pro Bowl reciever for Sanchez to throw too. I would think that the Browns would get a 2010 draft pick along with this.

It's a genius trade for the Jets, if true.

Shonn Green and Leon Washington are a solid one-two punch, as it is. Now you add Edwards to go across from Jericho. It's brilliant. But I haven't seen this reported anywhere.

I disagree. Do I need to point out the history of 30 year old running backs?

Here's a great article going in depth about the difference a year makes.

Jones is 30 years old, he has - at most - one more season in his prime. Worse yet, he, like Edwards, has contract concerns. Jones wants a raise based off his performance last year - while that's not at all outlandish on his part, it does mean that the Browns will be forced to over pay Jones should the Browns sign him.

The Browns get a one year fix at running back in exchange for a Wide Receiver in his prime. If the Browns can get a first round draft pick in the deal, it's not terrible - anything short of that is undervalue.

Base on simple value - Thomas Jones may be the most unattractive player in the entire NFL for a team to acquire.

Shawn Alexander went from 2,000yd rusher to nothing because he played less games in 2006. He would've cracked 1500+yds by the end of the season if played the whole year. I think 30 year old RB's can still perform. In today's NFL, teams are going with the two-back system which allows the younger RB's to see the ball more. I also believe that most 30-year old RB's end up on teams that don't perform well. (Emmit Smith/Edgerain James-Arizona) Is Jones going to be the Browns RB of the future? No. I think this is just a reason to get Cleveland a RB untill they can find a replacement in next year's draft. This is why I believe the Jets will surrender a 2010 draft pick for the Browns. Mangini must love something about Jones that is wanting him in Cleveland.

A first rounder would be ideal, but I think a second round draft pick is also plausible.

Trading for Jones is a risk, but if it helps out the team for a few years, I don't see the problem trading for him.

Alexander lost a full yard per carry - which isn't directly impacted by the games. Also look at his touchdown production - he went 27 TD's in 16 games to 7 TD's in 10 games to 4 TD's in 13 games.

You are absolutely correct here. Edge, for example, was in an ideal situation last year. They had a young RB to groom in Hightower, and they reserved Edge - allowing him to dominate post season. The problem is the Browns already have that veteran in Jamal Lewis. If the Browns had Shonn Green instead of Jamal Lewis - it would make sense to make the trade. But having 60 years of man invested in your top two runners is not a smart idea. Especially on a team that isn't a legit playoff team. Why over pay a player who will only help you next year?

This is a good point. Mangini may wear TJ PJ's.

TJ + a 2nd round pick wouldn't be terrible value. The Browns weren't willing to trade Edwards to the Giants for anything less than 1st round pre-Draft, I can't see them reducing that demand now.

I would be shocked if Jones has more than one thousand yard season.

Yes, is TD production has fallen over the years. Can we blame Hasselback for becoming more of a pass freak?

Jamal Lewis had offseason surgery(I can't remember for what). The Browns are probably looking for a second option in case Lewis doesn't last the whole season. I think allowing these two to split carries will take the work load off and allow them to rest. I believe that they will select a younger RB in next years draft to groom.

Somebody said on a Browns website that Mangini is creating the Cleveland Jets.

True. Never thought about that. I think the Jets should look at Plaxico Burress for a WR if this deal doesn't work out.

I think he could crack 1,000 in Cleveland. Depends on how many carries he gets.

The fact that you have to debate this internally, tells me you shouldn't pick either.

After Raiders left LA, I was extremely angry, but more toward Al Davis than the team. I'm sure the fans from Seattle feel the same way after Sonics moved to Kansas City and became the Thunder. Anyway, at that time I decided to not support the team as my way to retaliate against their relocation, and I picked the Jets because I was a New Yorker when I was young, and not because they were good or anything (and they weren't). In recent years, although I've grown attached to Jets' up-and-downs (and felt the pain supporting a franchise that hasn't won anything in decades), I also thought that perhaps I should reconsider going back to Raiders because (1) it was the team that got me interested in NFL and (2) I don't want to go back only after they gotten good. Hence my dilemma.

Anyway, maybe I'll support both teams for now; it's not like either team will go to Super Bowl anytime soon.

I could be wrong because I could give a crap about the Raiders but weren't they originally the Oakland Raiders, then they moved to L.A. and then they just moved back?

Yes they were, but when I gotten into NFL they were the Los Angeles Raiders, so to me they were always the LA Raiders first. Colts were from Baltimore, but Indianapolis is (and probably will always be) their home. Anyway, for me and other Los Angeles fans, when Al Davis took his team to Oakland there were alot of resentment, esp. since Raiders did win a SB in LA ('83 I believe). I just didn't want to continue to support Al Davis and his team back then, because they obviously didn't really care about the fans in LA.

I heard about this a few hours ago. The move makes sense for both teams.

Jets will definitely have to package a pick in there... how many other washed up guys can the Jets ship over to Mangenius... not that the safety and QB Eric picked up in the Sanchez trade are complete scrubs... but the odds are against most of those guys panning out.

But I will say... if you are going to deal Edwards eventually... considering his stock will only drop the longer they wait... and since the Jets certainly won't re-sign Jones after this year... put two and two together and you may have something.

If true, New York could potentially give New England a run for its money in the East and certainly be a much better match against the Phins this year. It's probably only a rumor, but eh, can't hurt to speculate right?
