Thrashers get Pavel Kubina and Tim Stapleton from Toronto, in exchange for Garnet Exelby and Colin Stuart.

Note: Exelby was the only remaining player from Atlanta's inaugural team in 1999.

Not to mention the Thrashers also signed Nik Antopov :o

Also, looks like the Heatley to Edmonton deal is DOA. What a *****e. Asks for a trade, but when he doesn't get what he specifically wants, he refuses to waive his no-trade clause. I hope Ottawa doesn't trade him just so he's stuck between staying in Ottawa or not playing hockey at all.

He is trying to do Brian Murray's job. He is the one who asked for the trade, and now he's blocking this Edmonton move hoping that San Jose or NYR offer him a deal. He clearly doesn't want to be an Oiler and puts himself before the team. If he think he had it tough with Clouston is Ottawa, Pat Quinn would eat him up here. I say move on, keep Cogs, Penner, and Smid and let Heatley rot in Ottawa.

This all comes back to the day that, Mr. *****e himself Eric Lindros refused to put on that Nordiques Sweater. He ruined the sport. I hope Heatley has to rot away in Ottawa for a the rest of his contract. Of course Ottawa is also to blame, this is the reason you don't give no trade clauses in contracts.

Briuns Re-Sign Mark Recchi to a one year 1 million dollar deal. Good move there.

He thinks he'll do better in New York? Look who the coach of New York is. Tortorella wouldn't stand for anything Heatley does as well.

I agree, forget about the trade. Heatley has certainly shown his true character with all this.

I just feel for Cogliano, Penner and Smid now. To know that they were on the cusp of being traded. How well will they take it?

Nash and the BJ's having trouble with contract talks.
"If this doesn't happen in the next week, and we can't hit a number where we're both satisfied and we both feel it's fair … if they want me that bad, they'll get it done."

The Dispatch speculates that the club came forward with a five-year deal, which was unacceptable to the 25-year old Nash.

"There were tons of teams throwing some pretty big money around (Wednesday)," Nash said. "If this doesn't get done, I'm sure I won't have a problem getting signed by somebody next summer."

I'm sure Penner has heard much worse than this, and apparently Smid has asked for a trade multiple times-http://communities.canada.com/edmontonjournal/print.aspx?postid=276287

I think Cogliano is the one most likely to take this news to heart. But the NHL is a business, and he should be flattered he was the centerpiece for a star like Heatley.

Is it fair to say that the Leafs could just very well be among the most feared teams in the NHL?

...I don't think any team will be ready for what we will do to them next year!

Surprised that Keith Tkachuk of all people came to the defense of Edmonton. Heatley should be in jail anyways. Friggn' Dan Snyder is dead and Heatley is being a baby about where he can play.

Most players judge Edmonton probably because of the area around Rexall Place. I admit that the drive to Rexall Place isn't pretty to look at.Bunch of strip malls and the like. That's why a new arena closer to downtown is important.

Very true...and Mark Bell had to suffer a 20 game suspension and 6 months of whatever for basically the same incident...except that no one died!!!

Now all they need is 2 more lines and a goaltender. :whatever:

Could be worse.

Could be Winnipeg.

But Edmonton does have the best ice in the league.

Nash signs 8-year, $62.4M extension

The Columbus Blue Jackets have locked up their franchise player, signing star winger Rick Nash to an eight-year, $62.4 million deal.

The deal averages $7.8 million a year. Nash has one more season left on his current deal so the extension doesn't kick in until the 2010-11 season.

Nash is the anchor of a Columbus team that made their first postseason appearance in franchise history this past season. The sniper scored 40 goals and 79 points in 78 regular season games and had one goal and three points in four playoff games. The 40-goal season was Nash's second of his career and in 2003-04 Nash led the league with 41 goals to share the Maurice Richard Trophy for most goals in the regular season with Calgary's Jarome Iginla and Atlanta's Ilya Kovalchuk.

The 25-year old was the first overall selection in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft and began playing in the NHL immediately as an 18-year old. His is regarded as one of the games brightest young stars and has tailored his offensive skills into a well-rounded, two-way game.

Nash is a four-time All-Star and assumed the title of Blue Jackets captain from Adam Foote in March of 2008 after a meeting with then-head coach Ken Hitchcock.

The Columbus Dispatch reported that Nash, general manager Scott Howson and Nash's agent Joe Resnick met on June 30th in an attempt to lay out the Jackets' plan for the future and Nash's role in those plans.

"This is the most important contract I've ever been involved with," Howson told the Dispatch.

Nash said at the time that he had no interest in prolonged negotiations.

"I know what [today] could mean for me and the organization," Nash said. "I'd like it to happen quickly but, if it doesn't, I have no problem waiting until both sides are happy.

"I've come up right through the ranks; now I'm the captain. I love this organization; I love everything about it. Nobody wants to rob the other person; we just both want to be satisfied."

Nash's long-term contract fits into the current NHL landscape where seven, 10, and even the 12-year deal Marian Hossa recently signed are status quo.

"If I sign a five-year contract, I come out at the end of it at 30 years old," Nash said. "That's when most guys are in their prime.

"The crazy long-term contracts -- 10 years or so -- that could be kind of nice, too."

Nash is part of a young nucleus in Columbus that includes 2006 and 2007 first-round picks Derick Brassard and Jakub Voracek, respectively. When the extension starts next season, he will become the highest-paid player in franchise history.

Columbus also signed free-agent forward Samuel Pahlsson Wednesday to a three-year, $7.95 million deal. Pahlsson finished the 2008-09 season with the Chicago Blackhawks after being acquired in a trade deadline deal with the Anaheim Ducks.

He has 194 goals and 355 points in 441 career games.

Nice signing by my Jackets, Nasher has been huge for this organization since he was drafted, he is super popular here in Columbus and has done a very good job as Captain. Jackets still have alot of cap space to sign another blue-liner and center.

Don't gimme that...Vesa has been dealing with nagging injuries ever since he got here...and we just need two decent forwards to round up our lines!

So parade next summer? ;)

I believe Toews and Kane are both unrestricted free agents next year. How in the world does signing Hossa for too long and too much money help Chicago beyond this year?

By stretching it out like that it lowers his cap hit per year. His deal is worth 7.9 per, but the cap hit is 5.23. Plus he only makes 7.5 in the last 5.

Parade every summer!!!

Naw...but we're taking steps in the right direction! Plus our defence just went from shoddy to shut down in just a week!

Leafs have an impressive defense, yet the still lack that true #1 defensemen.

Very true with all this trade talk about Kabby going to Vancouver for Schneider and a prospect...

I don't know why the leafs are so desperate to trade Kaberle. He's on a great contract and scores you at least 40 points a season while being responsible defensively.

That is very true...but his stock has dropped immensely in the past 3 seasons. I love Kabby, but instead of keeping a player on the decline, why not trade him for someone younger...?

Done and done :)

Leafs land coveted Swedish goalie
Kevin McGran
Sports Reporter

The Maple Leafs have their Monster.

Swedish goaltender Jonas Gustavsson signed a one year $900,000 (U.S.) contract Tuesday with the Maple Leafs.
It's the maximum allowed for the 24-year-old unrestricted free agent, who will be a restricted free agent in a year's time.

The goalie had a breakout season with Farjestadt of the Swedish Elite League, earning the nickname Monster for his play and 6-foot-3 frame. In 42 games with Farjestad of the Swedish league last year, Gustavsson posted a 1.96 goals against average with three shutouts and a .932 save percentage. During the playoffs he had five shutouts in 13 games.

"Jonas is considered by many to be the best goaltender not playing in the NHL today," Leafs general manager Brian Burke said in a press release. "He has a unique combination of size and agility and we’re excited to add a player with his potential to our roster."
Colorado, San Jose and Dallas were also reportedly in the running to sign him.

Landing the goalie is a coup for GM Brian Burke, who has already added Francois Beauchemin, Mike Komisarek and Garnet Exelby to stabilize Toronto's defence.

"I want to thank Brian Burke and his staff for giving me the opportunity to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs," said Gustavsson. "It is truly an honour and privilege and I feel very fortunate to wear the Blue and White sweater. Toronto is a great city, with tremendous fan support, and I am very excited about the future."

Well have to see how well Gustavsson actually does in the NHL. Remember how highly touted Fabian Brunstrom was last year?
