If he'd grown into the role of leading man, gaining experience in cool supporting roles, maybe he would have had a chance. But now it seems he'll be the face of two bombs. Whether it's his fault or not is irrelevant, he's the face, that's all people will remember.

He signed the contract to star in two stinkers. He could've said, do people really care about John Carter, probably not, so I won't sign the contract. Wow, their making a movie out of a board game with absolutely no story whatsoever, yeah I'll pass. Seriously why Battleship, if you going to base a movie off a board game about war, do Stratego, Risk, Axis and Allies, something that you could expand on and you don't need to write aliens into.

That's true, but he got the paychecks and signed as the leading man in these two mega blockbuster movies, so if these movies failed he will naturally get the blame as well. It's like Ben Affleck after making that stinker Gigli with JLo, his career went downhill, and it took him several attempts like a good performance in Hollywoodland and an acclaimed directorial debut with Gone Baby Gone to finally get him back into the fold. I have no doubt that two bombs in one summer will negatively affect Taylor's career, but he can re-establish himself if he chooses more wisely next time, and has the talents to do so. At least he get to kiss a gorgeous Brooklyn Decker before his own Battleship went down.

Yeah, some of the blame has to lay with him. Part of the skill of carving out a successful Hollywood career is selecting the right projects. John Carter under a different set of circumstances might have been more successful but Battleship..c'mon, whoever greenlit that was never going to take it seriously.

taylor kitsch can probably retire comfortably from his two paydays even if they both flopped. and truthfully with battleship we still don't know yet, seemed to do well overseas. i wouldn't call it a bomb based on it's midnite show. ive bumped into so many people who want to see it, but they don't talk about movies in the way that fanboys talk about waiting in anticipation for avengers. So tracking and early numbers really mean little at the moment. Two weeks in we'll see.

new actors have very low paychecks when they are in their first blockbusters. then for the sequels they get a lot more.
yes he is still rich by normal standards. but for hollywood standards get got IMO a small paycheck.

I think the two points are first 'poor guy' in that he could have two huge bombs on his hands one after the other. Of course he is never really going to be badly off relative to normal people, like anyone who gets to star in blockbuster films. But the opportunities were there to turn big very quickly if these had both done really well and even turned into franchises with him leading.

The other is that a significant part of the blame is his (and his agent's) for choosing badly. I'd give them John Carter as that one could have been different but Battleship had stinker written over it from inception.

As for midnight figures not being great to read box office potential I very much agree. But it's different when a blockbuster does almost nothing ($420k)! If awareness/relative excitement is that low it has no chance as there will be competition every week in summer so it has to open big to have a shot.

I enjoyed John Carter and thought Kitsch was cool. Made me like him after hating him as Gambit. Too bad if Battleship flops. But I don't see it stopping him. In recent interviews he said he realized the risks of headlining such huge movies with no guarantee for success and admitted that he's more interested in doing indie films after this.

Me neither, and I thought Gambit was the only decent part of XMO: Wolverine movie. It's a shame because I really like Hugh Jackman, but that movie was just too lousy and there's no redeeming value in it.

It was a well made movie especially from the effects part and even acting from hiddleston and jr but in terms of style over substance this is right there with transformers and other past summer popcorn flicks. Big dumb is a bit harsh I guess but what else would I call it? Im saving mindless fun for transformers or even battleship. I dont want to disservice the Avengers at all but they clearly went the full action route and the story played second fiddle.


As far as deeper all we got were glimpses of caps inner struggle and the scene where they all bickered and coulsons death which tallied about 20 - 25 minutes of screen time in a 2 and half hour movie. The escapism clearly dominated but I still loved the movie for the action though. Still Marvels best attempt yet outside of Ironman at a big scale movie but I would like to see a different directors take if there is a sequel.

Fair Enough, though I still say there were more subtleties about the movie than what you're suggesting.

And that is why the series hasn't had a $200 million grosser. They haven't been able to put together two great back to back films since You Only Live Twice/On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

I wouldn't put You Only Live Twice on the same level as OHMSS or several Bond movies (I'd say Dr. No to Thunderball, personally), but you're right about them not having two great back to back Bond movies since the 60s.

To me there's only been three great Bond movies since OHMSS, The Spy Who Loved Me, Goldeneye, and Casino Royale.

FRIDAY 4:30 PM, 2ND UPDATE: My sources don’t see any dramatic upticks in early numbers – yet. What a disaster at the North American box office this early summer weekend with everything from today and a week ago tanking except for Marvel’s The Avengers which should make another $55M. Universal’s Battleship is stuck at $9M-$11M today and $30M (which is around the same meager amount where Warner Bros’ Dark Shadows debuted last weekend and is on life support now). Paramount’s The Dictator which opened weakly Wednesday is completely falling apart even for an ‘R’ rated movie with just $12M. And Lionsgate’s What To Expect When You’re Expecting is beating it with $15M. Hollywood is in a very dark mood today — and I’m finding that the movie moguls are not appreciating my humor when I ask, “Are your bags packed?”

The movie made what 400K at midnight and last week Dark Shadows made 500K so the idea of Battleship having a OW of about 28-30 mill sounds about right.

I think you almost have to put Roger Moore's Bond in a separate category, with how much camp he intentionally interjected into the role.

In that respect, Live and Let Die was probably my favorite of his movies. It was just so horribly 70s.
