2012: A Monster Year? (box office predictions) - Part 5

Definitely matter of opinion. I couldn't stand The Hobbit. It really has no chance to. Very surprising considering it was a hardcore 3d movie and it was beat by 2 completely 2d movies. And iMax isn't a viable excuse since Hobbit was in iMax and 3d iMax

I actually prefer the Dark Knight Rises to the Hobbit, and that's saying something.

Inflation taken into account the Hobbit has performed far below its LOTR predecessors. I wonder how the sequels will do?

Will audiences grow or shrink? I think they may actually loose some of the non LOTR die-hards who went out to see the hobbit. From what i've heard it wasn't received greatly by the non-lotr fan general audiences.

Being 2D is an advantage in the eyes of many. In most films, maybe not only in Life of Pi, 3D is tremendously pointless and the darkened colors are just unpleasant.

Yes I agree but when we are talking box office, 3d has the advantage because it costs more to go see

I guess the higher price also scares some people away ... but then again, 2D versions of 3D films are also available, aren't they in US?

I get that SOM might have more universal appeal in some sense, but I also guess that people's taste have changed in the last five decade ... I wonder how would SOM do today?

If the sing-along re-releases are any indication, I would imagine very well.

The Hobbit1 is only $145K away from $300M domestic. Should reach that point before next weekend starts. I think that's a record for 2012. 5 films crossing $300M domestic. After that you have 2010 and 2007 with 4 films each.

BOM is speculating another 2 weeks til The Hobbit P1 crosses the $1B WW mark. So around the 10th of March maybe?

Hope Les Miz can make it to $400 million! It only has another $5 million to go...

I believe it hasn't even opened everywhere yet. Is $500 too much asked?

Unless it hasn't opened in places like china, japan, russia there's no way it's making another $100 million+

I believe China is the last big release for it. But I doubt it'll get $100 million from that place.

Yeah, $500 million ain't happening. I think $400+ million is great, though! It was expected to make $125 million in the US and it's currently at $146 million, so it's ahead there.

Warner Bros. Pictures is handling worldwide theatrical distribution, with select international territories as well as all international television distribution being handled by MGM.

I actually kinda liked The Hobbit. It's not special or anything but I liked it.

I didn't think it would reach 300mil or 1bil so yeah, good on it.

2012 is the first year with four movies to pass the 1 billion mark.

2011 was the first year with three.

2010 was the first year with two.

Interesting.
What are the billion pontential franchises that we have this year?
I can think of Spider-Man, Iron-Man and The Hobbit. Maybe Superman too.

The Hobbit and Iron Man have the most potential. Spider-Man is next year and I just can't see MOS being that big overseas with the first movie.

Catching Fire might be one also depending on how much the overseas increases by.

I can't believe I mentioned SM. I didn't even stop to think.
As for MOS...I didn't think for even one second that Skyfall would go past 1 billion, but it did. So, I'm willing to believe.

It will be alot harder for MOS to increase as much as Skyfall did.

The previous Bond movie made double what the previous Superman movie did overseas. So Bond has always had far more awareness globally than Superman.

Maybe the MOS sequel, in a couple years, can pull a Dark Knight and build on the original's fanbase by a wide margin.
