2013: The Re-Up (box office predictions)

I'm sure WB is exhaling a breath of relief that their string of box-office flops (Beautiful Creatures, Bullet to the Head, Jack the Giant Slayer, Gangster Squad) has been broken by 42.

With the stellar word of mouth it's been getting, I wouldn't be surprised to see a 4x multiplier on this film. Yes, I can see this easily being a good counter-programming film even when Iron Man 3 comes out.

Helgeland is an underrated director, regardless of your thoughts on his cinematic eye. I'd like to see him hook up a Marvel or DC thing at one point.

42 isn't going to do anything against Iron Man...that's 3 weeks away. By then it will be at 5 or so million that same weekend.

Of course it won't but not everyone will want see Iron Man 3 that weekend, me for example. So 42 may be the one they hit up

Top 10 worldwide

1. Oz The Great and Powerful $471,3 million
2. The Croods $385,8 million
3. A Good Day to Die Hard $299,9 million
4. G.I. Joe: Retaliation $271,5 million
5. Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters $219,4 million
6. Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons $207,9 million
7. Lost in Thailand $202,6 million
8. Jack the Giant Slayer $179,8 million
9. Chinese Zodiac $165,4 million
10. Identity Thief $162,4 million

Not bad for Die Hard 5. I thought it wouldn't hit the 300 million mark.

Oblivion opened in seven new territories (as well as in North America) after posting a $60.4 million premiere weekend that solidified Tom Cruise’s global drawing power. The expansion brought in an additional $33.7 million from overseas and brought the sci-fi blockbuster to a $150.2 global total. $112 million of that figure comes from 60 overseas markets. Two major markets are still on the horizon for the Tom Cruise vehicle. The film is slated to open in China and Japan in May.

Surprised at Oblivion's haul this weekend. While I didn't enjoy the film, I'm happy for the genre and for Tom Cruise. Make more movies like Oblivion, I didn't like this one but I love the genre.

‘Iron Man 3′ Opens Big Internationally: $13.2M

By NIKKI FINKE, Editor in Chief | Thursday April 25, 2013 @ 9:25am PDTTags: Iron Man 3
Iron Man 3 opened Wednesday in just a few international markets (representing 23% of overseas) and is already seeing results far above Iron Man 2 and in some cases, even The Avengers. The film set opening day records in Taiwan and Philippines registering the biggest opening days in box office history and opened bigger than Avengers in France. The first Iron Man film made $266M overseas and a global cume of $585.2M. The second installment made $308M overseas with a global cume of $623.9M. Those two films fell under Marvel’s old distribution agreement with Paramount, but all signs point to much bigger numbers for the third installment. Avengers took in a staggering $895M overseas last year so it will be interesting to see how much of a lift it gives Iron Man 3. With 79% of the international box office open this weekend, a $110-125M opening is within reach – if not higher. The film is getting good reviews and if Disney and exhibition can come to terms, Disney and Marvel could see upwards of a $150M domestic opening next week. Film opens May 3rd.

The second sequel superhero critical curse is going to be interesting with IM3. The second sequel in this genre usually comes off a great first sequel and guarantees a strong box office. It also set's up a situation where the second sequel can't critically match the first sequel.

IM3 will no doubt be critically praised to a degree a great deal higher than the second, but it's also coming off of the good will Joss Whedon infused into all marvel properties. They also supposedly saved their "biggest" name villain till the end. Spiderman did this as well and that made for a really strong opening presence.

Marvel loves getting out early and opening up even earlier internationally cause their movies don't really have all that much chance of getting bad word of mouth. IM3 has some solid leg space as well coming in and out of it's release. However after Star Trek and what's to follow, I think it's cume will hit a road block.

I'm also curious how "this" Mandarin will be received by the fans and what that will do for word of mouth. I can't see anyone who want's to see it changing their mind at this point.

FRIDAY UPDATE: Iron Man 3 has grossed $36.5 million in 27 territories. The Robert Downey superhero film opened in 15 additional markets on Thursday after a record breaking opening day in 12 territories on Wednesday. The film grossed $3.6 million in the U.K. and $3 million in South Korea on its opening day. Leading markets include Australia, where the film has grossed a commanding $8.1 million ahead of the weekend. Iron Man 3 will be released in China on May 1st.

Agreed. It'll be 4 times better than Iron Man 3 though isn't going to make as much

Iron Man 3 is currently sitting at 93% on RT. That's pretty tough to beat.

Expect it to drop 4 or 5 points into the high 80's.

But I doubt it stays in the top 5:

1) The Dark Knight - 94%

2) Iron Man - 94%

3) Superman (78) - 94%

4) The Avengers - 93%

5) Spider-man 2 - 93%

Given the twist in the movie i'm surprised that IM3 has such a high score.
I saw on Friday. IMO really didn't deliver . It's different to IM2 but i dislike them both.

Did you dislike it for fanboy reasons, general movie goer reasons, or both?
