2017: Best year for CBMs ever?

Yeah FOX should have forced James Mangold to make Logan in 3D, pg 13 and be full of quips. 99 percent Rotten tomatoes, and 1 billion guaranteed.:o

That wasn't what I was saying in the slightest. Logan executed it's premise as well as could be expected given restraints it had with its source material. However, CA:CW managed a juggling act that few ensemble films can match. It not only did justice to its many characters, but it also melded the gravitas of an R-rated film with the trademark Marvel fun. It was fearless and innovative, much like the Avengers before it. That's why it ended 2016 on the top of the cinematic mountain.

I like Civil War as much as the next person, but there was nothing really R-rated, gravitas or whatever about it. I do agree with you that the juggling act and pacing is very good.

2017 is definitely in the conversation for best years ever. I've really, really enjoyed them all although I've only ever seen each of them once.

If Ragnarok and JL are good, im sure it will be number one.
Don't forget about Kingsman 2 as well.

There has been some very good flicks: Logan and WW and some solid like Homecoming but nothing has been game changing or instant classic like: TDK, Iron Man, and The Avengers.

If those films are good the debate will likely be pretty much over. If one or more are great then they'll be no more likely or pretty much about it.

Yeah but same year TDK and Iron Man came out you also had awful turds like The Spirit and Punisher War Zone, and sure 2012 had Avengers and Dredd but TDKR and ASM were very polarizing within their respective fanbases.

And so far, 2017 has been great for CBMs, the ones released so far have been hits critically and financially (except Valerian, if you count that).

I don't agree but a lot of people consider Logan an instant classic.

Logan is (marginally) my least favorite of the four CBMs this year so far... but I still really liked it a lot. GOTG2, WW, and HC all just connected to me more.

Logan is awesome.

But it's rewatch ability factor is less to me. It's too depressing. GOTG vol 2 is irrelevant to me, and forgettable.

I guess in terms of volume and batting for average if Thor 3 and JL deliver then yes ... it will be the best CBM year ever.

But in terms of peaks? I still say 2008 and 2012 take the cake.

It's hard to argue with this. There hasn't been one CBM out this year that you could say wasn't a good, solid film. You can debate *great* all day long with many of the films, but you'd be hard pressed to say these films weren't at least good, solid films.

I know RT isn't the "end all, be all" to film criticism, but consider the mainstream CBM scores for the year...

Logan: 93%
Lego Batman: 90%
GOTG2: 82%
Wonder Woman: 92%
Spider-Man HC: 92%

So far, the "worst" reviewed CBM is 82%, which is still "Certified Fresh". I'm guessing Thor won't dip below that. JL is the one I'm worried about, but if it gets at least 75%, there's no doubt 2017 will have set the bar for CBMs in a single year.

I've got to go with 2008 as the best year: Iron Man was a game changer for the superhero genre, and The Dark Knight was a game changer for the entire movie industry. And then you have the underated Incredible Hulk - Ed Norton as Bruce Banner! Come on, that's awesome! - and the wonderful Hellboy II.

has been a good year. Logan has been the standout , with WW and S HC being solid and GOTG2 being average. Hoping TR can be between a standout and solid to round off the year. JL would be hoping to be solid

Maybe. I have liked all the movies so far, but something is holding me back from declaring this the best. Movies this year have taken a very welcome breather, but I'd like to see something huge also. Like the Avengers or Civil War. Perhaps Thor: Ragnarok will give me that.

It's easy to say what the worst year was for comicbook movies: 1997.

Batman & Robin. Spawn. Steel. Justice League of America TV movie (although it wasn't actually broadcast).

Thank goodness the next few years saw Blade, X-Men and a new start for the genre.

Okay, the year so far:

Logan, a masterpiece, for me it almost dislodges TDK as greatest ever CBM

GOTG vol 2, I loved this film, even more than the original - it was funnier and at times much sadder, a real triumph IMO

Wonder Woman, for me this was a very good (but not great) film, but certainly deserving of its success.

Lego Batman.......for me doesn't count.

Spider-Man Homecoming, easily the best Spider Man film, and that had nothing to do with the special effects and everything to do with Holland's wonderful performance in the title role.

So, by any reckoning it's been a great year so far, but look at what's to come.

Justice League, looks action packed and probably funny, but I believe the JLA deserve a movie with some heart and soul. Still, as long as it's good, I can live with that.

Ragnarok...... the trailers suggest it will be fantastic, but trailers have been misleading in the past.

Kingsman: the Golden Circle, which people seem to be overlooking - Matthew Vaughn's first ever sequel, so it could be triumph ....I hope.

Okay, so even if 2 out of these three are mediocre I think it's still pretty arguable that this is the best ever year of cbms, thus far.

On that note, if Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman had been any good at all, well 2016 would have taken it hands down.

For me the greatest CBM happened this year (in Logan) so yes.

Also great year for women with Wonder Woman and Atomic Blonde
