31 Nights of Halloween: 2021 Edition

Did a Del Toro double feature
Blade 2
Maybe I was just exhausted from a 12 hour shift, but I struggled to stay engaged with this. It nice seeing Reedus and Yen though. 6/10

Crimson Peak
I have no idea why I didn’t watch this sooner. Gorgeous to look at with a great cast. 8/10

Night 12

32. There's Someone Inside Your House (New)

Fun Size Review: It's probably not a good sign when three people are watching a movie, and they are all so bored they get lost on what is happening. This movie has the ingredients to be good, it's just executed in such a boring, blah way, it never happens. Will probably never see this again.

33. Till Death (New)

Fun Size Review: This is... okay. I got the feeling watching it, that with a different lead actress, this could have really been something. But Fox, while doing her best, just isn't all the compelling. The premise is a lot of fun though, and I was drawn in by the brothers.

34. The Addams Family 2 (New)
oor5Yim.gif

Fun Size Review: I looked this up on RT after, and I was honestly shocked by how low the rating was. This isn't earth shattering or anything, but I found it perfectly fine. And as a big Addams Family fan, I rather enjoyed it. My only issue with these two animated films so far is Fester. He just can't measure up. Wednesday is so great though.

35. Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Fun Size Review: One of the strangest movies of my youth. There is a much I remember fondly as I was rather little when this came out. But in the light of adulthood, it has so many warts. Still, worth it just for Paul Reubens Rutger Hauer. They are having so much fun.

Halloween (1978)

Checking out the original again before the new one and to no ones surprise, this movie is still iconic.

13.Friday the 13th(2009)

For night 13 i thought why not throwing in a Friday the 13th movie...could be a new Tradition maybe, its fun.
Nothing changed about my opinion on this.

Not as good imo as Michael Bays Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but far better than the 2010 nightmare on elm street.
Its a decent Reboot, that with a better script and better direction, could have done so much better.
Because the ideas are there...the visuals are neat and the atmosphere is working well.
But the movie is shot very basic, without many shots that really grab you, make you feel.

I love Jasons look and that they dont made him this slow walking undead, instead have him be a smart hunter...but thats about it sadly.

I thought Megan Fox was actually very good in "Till Death".
I've watched Hush and Gerald Game's quite a few times now. The obvious "inspiration" provided by those two films hit me like a truck. As did the difference in quality between Fox, Gugino and Siegel.

Halloween (2018)

It's more or less how I felt the first time around, it's a great examination of Laurie Strode as a survivor, solid direction by David Gordon Green, and that kid who's being babysat is the MVP of the movie. The only minor gripes I have that keeps it from being perfect is the overall movie at times feels kinda feels disjointed and it's not as tightly edited as it should be.

Halloween Kills

Michael Myers saw he was down by 20 points against Jason Voorehees with the kill count and went buck wild in the 4th quarter.

Night 13

36. Sorority Row
shtDQgy.gif

Fun Size Review: A very 80s movie with a 00s aesthetic. This movie could be so much more, it's just goofy enough to get by. Also doesn't hurt that the movie has like four legit forever girls.

1. 30 Days of Night (7/10)
2. Ghoulies (1/10), and Ghoulies II (3/10)
3. Malignant (7/10)
4. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (7/10)
5. The Quiet Ones (4/10)
6. The Witches [1990] (6/10)
7. The Amityville Horror [1979] (5/10)
8. Spawn [6/10]
9. The Evil Dead [1981] (8/10)
10. The Evil Dead II (8/10)
11. Army of Darkness (6/10)
12. The Brood [1979] (6/10)

Overall this wasn't really that good. Lots of things just didn't make sense in it, especially with the way certain scenes were shot. The only things that it really had going for it were the unsettling atmosphere and the shock factor towards the end.

13. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning [2006] (5/10)

A disclaimer that I haven't yet seen any of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies, so I figured I'd start with this one (since it's supposedly the first in the chronology). Eh it wasn't unwatchable terrible, but it could've just been so much better. It actually had decent production values and didn't feel "cheap" but the directing and writing left a lot to be desired. Also, Matt Bomer is a legit good actor. I almost thought he was just a pretty face. ;)

14. Saint Maud (6/10)

This was so disappointing. The trailers back in 2019 sold a different type of movie than this turned out to be. Most of it didn't even feel like a horror movie (mostly felt like a drama), and the pacing was a lot slower than I expected. And it honestly felt like the director/writer watched The Witch [2015] and liberally borrowed from it. The lead actress also lacked a lot of characterization, I was constantly wondering why she was doing what she was doing.

Day 7. Night of the Demons
Day 8. Drag Me to Hell.
Day 9. Werewolves Within.
Day 10. Evil Dead 2.

Not nearly as far behind as I could be right now.

14.Halloween(1978)

Since the new Halloween came out for you all yesterday, i thought to go with the theme and throw in the good old one to have my own Halloween evening.
And what do you say...its a classic, what else is there to say.
A timeless classic that still works so well.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch

Watched this again but with the commentary from Shout Factory of Tommy Lee Wallace. I thought it was interesting when he was looking back at certain kills (like the face pull in the hospital), it still took him by surprise of how violent it was... even though he directed it. And no matter how many times I've rewatched this, that ending still remains to be effective.

Thoughts posted here: The Halloween Film Series Thread... - Part 4

Night 3.5

So, finished up the Underworld series over the week.

9. Underworld: Awakening

Well, an attempt to get back to the eastern Europe setting was given, and failed. The movie was very much filmed in Canada. I think the loss of McBride in the script can be a bit debatable, but I think the real loss was Tatapolous in creature design and the shift to digital effects. The stuff they do for Eve does not justify a digital mask. The sickly Lycans are a decent approximations of Tatapolous's lycan design, the uberwolf and scientist's evolved form just lack that Tatapolous touch to the creature. nd the beginning of the franchises' Scott Speedman issues. But hey, we get too little Charles Dance. I still had fun, though.

10. Underworld Blood Wars

At least we are back in an eastern europe setting. Semira is at least more interesting than the lycans in the last movie. Marius is not however. And again, really, really lacking that Tatapolous touch in addition to too much CGI. More sasquatch than Lycan. And the nordic vampires also lack the kind of stuff we saw with the medieval vampire armor we saw in 2 and 3. But more Charles Dance, but again, not enough. I do not know why I enjoy this stupid franchise.

Night 4

Decided to go to one of my guilty favorite horror franchises.

11. The Prophecy

I'm going to be straight with you, christian mythology is a weakness of mine. Especially with Angels. (Hi Legion and Warrior Nun!!!!) Plus, you have Christopher Walken giving a Christopher ass Walken performance as the villain, Gabriel. And in a stand out first performance, you have Viggo Mortensen able to outshine Walken for a bit as Lucifer. Virginia Madson and Adam Goldbeg are also in it, and fine. I love how they are able to make the angels seem very alien, from their little perching trick, to how they sniff the air like dogs. I personally love this movie.

12. The Prophecy II

Or, the Prophecy writers watched too much Terminator. But, we get more Christopher Walken, so, whatever. And in even better news, he gets to play off Brittany Murphy, which is great. Their interplay almost makes it a more fun movie than the first. Jennifer Beals is fine as the lead and we even get Eric Roberts as Michael. The Walken content is definitely more fun in this.

13. The Prophecy III: The Ascent

This movie is a mess. I think they were attempting to pull a pivot from horror to action, ala Terminator. And failed. Failed so, so hard. And the cardinal sin is practically ditching Christopher Walken. They had Christopher Walken, and barely used him. The little of human Gabriel we get is great. They also wasted Brad Dourif. You have ****ing Chucky, and you don't use him as the evil angels' corpse chauffer, one of the great bits of the first two movies? And instead you use the still living bland girlfriend of the main character? I would say that no one on this movie watched the first two, but that would be a lie, because it is chock full of call backs to the first movie, and is a continuation of the second. Lets make the coroner who dealt with the angel corpses in the first two movies into the character who becomes the expert in biblical and angelic lore and languages. Lets bring back the little girl from the first movie. And the goddamn best scene of the movie is literally Gabriel revisiting the diner he made a stop in during the first movie. Admitidly, when you have Walken, you should expect a bit of an acting differential, but good god, everyone else in this movie is not good (except Dourif, but again, wasted). And they take a lot of the tension from the chase by attempting to make it into some stupid lame action movie. I don't know what kind of head injury I was suffering when I first watched this movie and enjoyed the action.
