Spooky Review: It's The Thing. It's good. Duh.

14. Malignant

Finally settled down to watch this. I had been spoiled on the twist, but it didn't make the movie any less awesome. Kind of wish I had seen it a lot earlier, maybe even in the theaters. You know, keep Wan away from the Conjuring movies, lionizing those frauds, let him do original stuff.

15. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Miss Osbourne

Was not exactly what I was expecting. Really lost me with the focus on these side characters and not, you know, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

But Conjuring 2 was sooooooo goooooooood...

The problem was never Wan. It was just how damn likeable Vera and Ocean Master are. :hehe:

Alien Resurrection - 4/10

I had only seen the ending of this movie many years ago and never sat down for the whole thing. I now know why. This plot is just awful. At least Ron Pearlman made me laugh with his stupid ****ing dialogue.

“So I heard you like came across these things before.” “So like uh, what did you do?”

The Lost Boys

Three immediate thoughts:
A Richard Donner produced film? Of course they would talk about Superman. Alex Winter aka Bill from Bill & Ted and the dude in Freaked playing an edgy vampire who's in a gang? Hilarious. And last but not least... I STILL BELIEVE!

Night 23 with a movie that for some paved the way for Horror and visual storytelling in movies in general.

The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari

1920 movie, so of course its not holding up too well nowadays.
But looking at it from a visual standpoint, its still absolutely stunning what someone captured on film over 100 years ago.
The sets and the way perspective is used etc, considering the age is still impressive.
I tend to watch the movie for nostalgia reason, to see the movie that inspired many that then changed the Film industry because of it.

I mean, I like his Conjuring movies. Just wish the side effect wasn't lionizing a bunch of con artists. But, they're dead now, so they aren't directly benefitting.

No movies last night, but it's a movie themed theme park with several movie themed houses, so we're going to count them :hehe: They're in order of how I experienced them.

anigif_sub-buzz-896-1564606092-1.gif

Dead Man's Pier: Winter Wake
In terms of original theming, this was the best one. The pier sets looked really cool, the costumes were well put together, and it was exceptionally well lit without losing any of the scariness. The blues really stood out from the rest of the other original houses, which all had the same kind of color schemes at times. 9/10

a198845c0a3dcfb00b47cf8fc6d08a62.gif

Hellblock Horror
Probably the worst one, and I only say that because I literally remember nothing about this one. Nothing stood out. Might've been because I was a little drunk, but no excuses. I want to be scared :argh: 0/10

5.gif

Fiesta de Chupacabras
This was the lamest one as a theme, but that made it really funny to walk through. The costumes and puppets were really nice, but I could not take the Chupcabras seriously. 8/10 for the laughs.

giphy.gif

Halloween
Easily the best one. I know I have a Halloween bias, but this was a really well put together maze. Hit all the important beats to the film, and each of the sets looks fantastic. The recreation of the Laurie finding her friends in the bedroom was fantastic. The scares were well placed throughout, and honestly there were a couple of times it could be to jump. The only time I was scared of an unexpected jump was in this one while walking through sheets blocking your vision. The ending in particular was legit horrifying. 10/10

19fff003d899a5c8718a227c0095814157bb02f9.gif

The Horrors of Blumhouse: Freaky
Part one of the Blumhouse maze. I'm not super familiar with the movie outside the basic premise, so i'm not really sure how well it recreated anything, but it was a really cool maze. I really liked the aesthetic, and the jumps were well placed. Would've been neat to have this been it's own thing instead of being one half with The Black Phone. 7/10

me-the-grabber.gif

The Horrors of Blumhouse: The Black Phone

Scarier than the movie to be honest. That mask is already horrifying, so imagine not being able to walk two feet without it jumping into your face. This was super well done, and super creepy. So many dark rooms with just a single light on the phone ringing, while you're unsure of where The Grabber will come from. Got me a couple of times. Again, this should've been its own house. 9/10

giphy.gif

The Weekend: After Hours Nightmare
This one had the best costumes. I really liked the designs and the makeup looked really good. Wasn't particularly scary in the same way the others were, this one more relies on shock value with the elaborate sets. It was a nice breakup from the others which get a little samey samey after awhile. 8/10

313beca0302e87631ad953b398b70f84.gif

Universal Monsters: Legends Collide
They do this one, or a variation of it every year. It's okay. It feels overly reliant on The Mummy, and not the other two monsters that are a part of it. The sets and costumes are really good, which makes sense considering they have to use them consistently. 6/10

tumblr_oejgzmZN7M1r04g55o2_500.gifv

Descendants of Destruction
This came at a time of night where people were clearing out and I was exhausted, so the next couple might not totally be fair. Not really sure the theme was very strong, and the lighting was so bad it was hard to really see anything. It's like a NYC subway station overrun by monsters? Wasn't great. 3/10

F6m3.gif

Bugs: Eaten Alive
I wish I didn't have to really rush through this one because I loved the aesthetic and costuming. 50s households with really good looking mutant bug costumes/makeup. Not particularly scary, but this was worth it just for the production. 7/10

riverdalejosie.gif

Spirits of the Coven
Another one that was just kind of lame. I really liked the theme. A witches' speakeasy, but I didn't think the scares were particularly well placed. The costumes looked good though. Would've liked something a little more though. Felt it was missing a key ingredient. 5/10

18. The Ring 8/10
19. Evil Dead [2013] 8/10

I saw Sam Raimi's original for the first time last year, and this was actually a pretty solid remake, even though it was a more "serious" movie and had none of the campiness & overdramatics of the original. Loved how many practical effects this movie had too, especially for a "modern" movie that could've over-relied on CGI. And even though I've seen my share of horror movies over the years, this was still scary, freaky, and unsettling in all the right ways.

20. Nosferatu the Vampyre [1979] 9/10

Wow this was such a well-done film, and it really reminded me of the silent-film era with how visual it was. The cinematography and musical score combined to make this incredibly impactful and memorable, and I really felt like I was transported into the setting & place. Loved this film, and easily the high point of everything I've seen so far this month.

21. Phantasm [1979] 3/10

This one, on the other hand, was quite honestly a turd. Nothing really made sense in this movie, and I couldn't follow any semblance of a plot. Although I'm thinking I should try to rewatch this to make sure I saw the same movie that some folks on IMDB are raving about....

22. Brightburn 7/10

As someone who was expecting this to be an "elseworlds" take on evil kid Clark Kent / Superman, I was both disappointed yet pleasantly surprised by this movie. Disappointed because it wasn't actually about evil kid Clark Kent, and was more of an original character inspired by the idea of that concept. But I was also pleasantly surprised by that because its concept allowed it to do things that probably wouldn't happen in an "official" evil kid Clark Kent story. In particular I was surprised at how "dark" in tone it got for the concept, and how it ended. I'd watch a sequel if they made one!

Dead Silence (Rewatch)

It's been a while since I had this on my October rotation but this movie still rules. Between James Wan eccentric directing and just the music alone... It's the quickest way for me to get into the Halloween mood other than Halloween 78 or Trick r Treat. I still find some parts utterly hilarious like every acting decision Donnie Wahlberg makes here. But anyways, I'm glad Wan came back to this kind of filmmaking and made Malignant, we need more crazy ass horror movies like Dead Silence.
5/5

Also, it never occurred to me but this sounds so much like Goosebumps and maybe that's why it works so well.

Spooky Review: There might be no two human beings meant for each other more then the main characters her. Monroe and Pennywise are as endearing as all hell in a flick that plays more like a teen romance then thriller, but works near perfectly all the same.

60. Wolf of Snow Hollow (NEW)

Spooky Review: This one was interesting. It's an attempt at a horror comedy, that I'm not sure works. There's something very offbeat about it, but I'm not sure if there is a point, outside of the main character is offbeat and he's suppose to be "learning something", but what he's leaning seems... dumb? I don't know. Still, I had a decent time with this. Definitely no Werewolves Within though.

Spooky Review: Aya Cash, hanging out in a cabin, eating pizza, and telling scary stories. It's the literal dream and goes just as well as one would hope.

16. The Prophecy

Yeah, this series is right up my ally. So yeah, I will rewatch it. Christian mythology with peak Walken performance? Hell yeah, no reason not too. With bonus excellent Viggo Mortensen, I really just enjoy this movie.

17. The Prophecy 2

I think this might be my favorite of the series. Walken playing off Brittany Murphy is so, so good. The plot also runs a tad smoother than the first one. Granted, Eric Roberts showing up as Michael is a bit less impressive since I've been introduced to him as a high cat in A Talking Cat?

Teen Wolf (1985)
Marty McFly becomes a werewolf! Had never seen this before, but am well aware that the tv show based on this show has a huge following. Much like I adore Michael J. Fox himself, I absolutely adore this movie. There's just this sense of charm that oozes from him, and the movie by extension. There's just so much to like. I loved that it just jumps right into this transformation, and I howled (pun totally intended) when he opens the bathroom door to his see his father. I laughed even harder with the "great power great responsibility" quote because not much earlier I was thinking about how this is basically Fox's Peter Parker. Only thing that hampered any enjoyment was the really bad homophobic scene, which came out of nowhere and caught me a little off guard. Still, it's an 80s feel good movie, and after a rough sports night, I certainly needed it :hehe:

Night 24 with me again trying to see how the reboots of the big 4 have aged.

Friday the 13th(2009)

Still the same spot, better than Nightmare on Elm Street but not really that much better than Halloween and far beneath Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

I dont know why i do it, but i keep going back to those 4 reboots here and there because im curious to see if my opinion changes over time.
Maybe i finally see a gem in this or that, but every time i come out of the tunnel with the same results.

While less Zombie Jason is a good idea, nothing else about the movie is something that made me want to see more.
The kills werent that unique nor did they do anything to really move Jason forward or his story.
Its a reboot for reboot sake and not really to expand and modernize the idea.
It cant even really score with brutality or effects or the kills...its all very bland.
Nothing that makes it really stand out...which is a shame because the sets are good and Jason looks and moves fantastic...he feels so incredible huge and deadly.

But that helps little when the rest of the movie has not much else to offer.

However, it created a new hunger for new Jason Vorhees stuff...i hope the whole legal thing is soon over and someone gets the rights an makes new stuff, its about time for Jason to return strong.

By now, if you've ever watched a Purge movie, you pretty much know exactly what you're gonna get.

The politics in this one were especially heavy-handed, which is really saying something where this franchise is concerned. I'd be a liar though if I denied being fitfully entertained by this latest installment...

It was also cool to see Tenoch Huerta in a 'smaller' movie just before he hits the big time as Namor in a couple more short weeks...
