Audition - 8/10

Another movie with pacing issues since it doesn’t get interesting until the last hour, but it’s a terrific last hour. Takashi Miike employs dream logic techniques similar to David Lynch which is always a plus in my book.

Night 24

62. Sleepy Hollow

Spooky Review: A staple from back when Burton wasn't the laziest boy in class. Oddly, probably his darkest, even more so then Todd, in that he's actually willing to butcher the kiddies.

4/5

Spooky Review: The greatest threat to the universe, is also it's greatest hope. AKA a 10 year old girl, with a DGAF attitude. I'm still confused how this looks better then the vast majority of Marvel and DC flicks, but that doesn't matter. What matters is that PG is going to use the power of love and hunky boys to first save, then enslave us all!

5/5

64. Bit (NEW)

Spooky Review: This one is a weird one. On one hand, the lead's performance and story is a very strong coming of age turn. She's super relatable and her family life is played with a tenderness and subtly that makes it really work. And then there is the vampire stuff. When our MC first meets the group, it's actually rather good. But once she's "inside" the group, things turn into a bit of a trashy exotic horror flick, with a ton of bad acting, but little of the trashy fun you'd associate with such an endeavor. The lead vamp has a lot of speeches, and instead of charisma, she's brings a lot of Ford's VO for Blade Runner energy. Still, I enjoyed this, and it gets a lot of credit for how it handles the intersecting ideas of trans and women's rights.

3/5

65. Hush

9EqDGCQ.gif

Spooky Review: I could write about the qualities of this film, from it's use of sound or the basic premise of a piece of glass being the one thing separating a deaf woman from her murderer. But nah, I just want to say that if more people took the murderer's initiative and just killed Samantha Sloyan's character on sight, we'd live in a better world.

4/5

66. Chopping Mall

Spooky Review: There are things that transcend art, and one of those things is the movie where a man drives a cart ten feet into an electrified killer robot, killing himself and causing the robo killer to explode.

4/5

67. Nightbooks

Spooky Review: A flick that calls to my inner child, a year later I'm still surprised by how much this rules. I need the sequel. GIVE ME THE SEQUEL!

4.5/5

Hush was a neat spin on the home invasion thriller. Chopping Mall has all the glorious 80’s cheese that I love. I need to see Psycho Goreman soon.

Definitely agree.

I'll never forget how my love affair with PG started. Namely, a series of gifs posted by @Kane52630 . Even then, it could not prepare me for all the awesomeness.

I’m sick as **** so I’m keeping these shorter.

21 October

20) V/H/S 99. It’s good. Nothing that topped SAFE HAVEN from V/H/S 2, but a solid entry. 3.5/5

22 October

21) SCARE ME. Loved this movie. Had no idea it was the same filmmaker as WEREWOLVES WITHIN. I’m in love with Aya Cash 4.5/5

22) V/H/S 2. An all-timer for SAFE HAVEN. 4.5/5

23) WEREWOLVES WITHIN. Such an easy movie to like. 3.5/5

24) MARROWBONE. I like a lot of these actors, but this movie would really benefit from embracing pulp a bit more. The ending is ****ing horrible. 2/5

23 October

25) WEREWOLF BY NIGHT. Meh. I should be congenitally incapable of resisting this, but it just didn’t grab me. 2.5/5

26) BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA. First time on the big screen. I somehow never appreciated the sound design as much as I should’ve until this viewing, and I have a degree in sound engineering! 4.5/5

24 October

27) SOUTHBOUND. Pretty solid anthology flick with early work from some current heavy hitters. 3/5

25 October

28) MORBIUS. What can I say, I make weird decisions when I’m running a fever. At least it’s better than LOVE & THUNDER? 1.5/5

I saw this movie in 2001 at the on-campus theater when I was a freshman in college. I'd had a one-on-one lesson with an upper classmen to teach me how to use the tape decks (jesus ****ing christ I'm old) and when we wrapped up he recommended I see AUDITION. Didn't tell me anything about it but the title. I was a young film major, so I didn't even bother to ask what it was about, I just said "I'll check it out."

Well dear folks, that was one of the most memorable times I've ever had in a movie theater. I don't think a single soul present knew we were watching a horror movie until that goddamn ****ing bag moved. As the movie descended further and further into the deepest pit of hell, I saw, by a long shot, the most walk-outs I've ever seen in a movie theater. Some of my professors were amongst those bailing!

Anyway, good movie. 5/5. No notes.

It's not hyperbole for me to say this, but Thanos or The Joker aint got s**t on that girl in Psycho Goreman.

Tense, weird... huge payoff - watch immediately

18. The Prophecy 3: Ascent

When the second movie feels like you are doing a riff on Terminator, might as well make a bad T2 for the next movie. Beyond the comical bit of late 90's CG dust storm of a "chase scene", this movie commits to criminal acts. Wastes both Christopher Walken, who damn well made these films what they are, and Brad Dourif, who really should have been the corpse chauffer.

19. The Prophecy 4: Uprising

Screw you Dimension Films, I am giving the DTV sequels their proper number. Anyway, toss away all the previous films, barely connected to them. Kari Wuher, who being introduced to her in late seasons of Sliders, was definitely a draw when I first saw it. Main star in this film is Sean Pertwee, taking a turn as a rough, corrupt eastern European cop. Good to see Gotham's Alfred again. Rewatching it, I really enjoyed John Light as "John Riegert". No Christopher Walken, sure, but I enjoyed him. I liked mainly that the main villain wasn't an angel, per se, but a demon. Barely got much mention in the previous films.

20. The Prophecy 5: Forsaken

Feels a lot like a retread of 3, to be honest. And ends up being closer to that movie than I originally thought. Still, better 3. A lot more focused on Kari Wuher, which is great for my crush on her. We also get Dimension Films king of DTV's Jason Scott Lee. And best of all, finally a suitable replacement for Christopher Walken, Tony Todd as the angel villain. As a fan of christian mythology, I respect what they were trying to do by fleshing out the ranks of angels, but it did not work very well. Also, an interesting debate was kind of sidelined too quickly about the questioning of god's plan.

Still love this series, though.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch (REWATCH)

It wouldn't be a horror marathon without my favorite Halloween movie that's not 78. Just glad more people are finally finding appreciation for this one. Now having seen the Thorne trilogy, filmmaking wise it is interesting that III was the last time these movies actually feels like Carpenter's Halloween where he uses his same crew.
