I'm willing to bet that no one is going to buy the 40GB model and go for the 80GB one. Then Sony will phase out the 40GB one due to low sales.

did people honestly think they would? The system does not have the 2 chips needed to play the games. They could easily emulate with the Emotion Engine but from what I hear not with the Graphics Synthesizer. It will take alot of time, money and resources for that, and would be better off leaving the chip in if that were the case. Its counter productive to work on getting software emulation for PS2 titles.

So we'll have a $399 40gb, $499 60gb and a $599 80gb bundle. The 60gb is still the best value and those should be gone this holiday season. With the addition of the 40gb now, I think they will unbundle the 80gb after XMas. By then the 60gb should be depleted and the pricepoint between the 40gb will be too high

Depending on what reports you believe, the 60gig is almost if not gone already. At least as far as warehouse goes. So you could get the 40gig or 80gig (which will probably drop to the 60gig price) for Christmas. We will know alot more in the next week or so. IMO.

yeah they are gone in the warehouses, but I still see plenty in stores around me. They will be scarce come Christmas and probably near impossible to find outside of online sources early next year

Sony to cut PS3 prices in Japan, offer new model

TOKYO, Oct 9 (Reuters) - Sony Corp said on Tuesday it would cut the price of its PlayStation 3 game console with a 20 gigabyte hard disk drive by 10 percent in Japan, and launch a new model, in a bid to better compete with Nintendo Co Ltd's (7974.OS: Quote, Profile, Research) hot-selling Wii.

Sony said it would lower the price of the 20 gigabyte (GB) model to 44,980 yen ($384) from 49,980 yen on Oct. 17.

It will also start selling its 60 GB model at 54,980 yen. Sony has not so far suggested a price for the 60 GB model, but it currently retails for around 60,000 yen.

Sony said it would launch a new PS3 with a 40 GB hard drive at 39,980 yen in Japan on Nov. 11.
