6.17 Combat - Discussion Thread (spoilers)

All of their moves are rehearsed and all of the stunts and games that they play with each other within the show are rehearsed,

No there not. The only time that they ever rehearse anything is when there are a lot of people in the rind for a promo and even then it’s only so that they don't block each other from the camera's view. In fact the best wrestles like Steve Austin, are given bullet points and make up what they say on the spot. As for their matches being rehearsed, on of my favorite matches ever on TV was Stone Cold Steve Austin Vs Chris Benoit for the WWF Championship, going into the match they had decided to do 10 German suplexs, that's all. The German suplex took up about a minute of the match, the match lasted for over twenty.

Where would they find time to memorize all these matches, they wrestle four times a week.

so it kind of does make it acting, especially if the outcome of the fight is fixed.

On Jan 7th Triple H legitimately torn his quad muscle right of the bone, he could barely walk, he finished the match. Twice. He also went into a Ladder Match with a knee that needed surgery.

Shawn Michaels back is held together by two screws and a metal plate and he still fly’s around the ring, doing moonsaults and falling twenty feet through four tables.

Stone cold Steve Austin was dropped on his head, which compressed his spine and paralyzed him in the middle of the ring. It only lasted fifty seconds but most people would have been afraid to move. What does Austin do? He starts crawling on his knees and forearms [his hands weren't working yet] and he rolls his opponent up to end the match. He then gets to his fight and walks out of the arena only minutes after being paralyzed.

One of the problems he got from that was that his legs became hyper reflexive, sometimes they shake uncontrolably. This, as well as too much stress, coffee and energy drinks nearly killed him, he was taken to hospital where the doctors told him that his heart rate was on heart attack level and they were also worried that he would have a stroke. Luckily nothing like that happened and he was released the next day, later that day he wrestled.

Mick Foley has a spot he likes to do, it involves him getting his head tied between to ropes and hanging from the ring. One night the ropes were too tight and his left[ I think] Ear was ripped clean off. The time keeper took the ear to the boss, who said "let’s put this on ice and get Foley to the local hospital and hope they can re-attach it." Where was Foley while all this was happening. He was finishing his match.

There are many more incidents like these involving many other wrestlers, these are not storylines created to make these guy seem tough or brave. They really happened and I don't think you can call that "acting"

yes, but wrestling in terms of upsurd storylines and certain finishing moves are fake. Most matches are predecided, and scripts are written on a weekly basis.

Everyone knows that. The problem is that most people don't appreciate what these guys put their body through on nightly basis. It's just dismissed as entertainments bastard child and "fake"

Actors get hurt all the time while filming movies. Hell, Toby hurt his leg pretty bad while filming "Sea Biscuit". Wrestling is no different.

I think what Avid meant was that the moves are rehearsed. The "performance" is ad-libbed, but there's foreknowledge of who will "win" in the end. Do the wrestlers get hurt during their performances? SURE! Do they want to? Mmmm... probably not. No matter how much a move is rehearsed, timing is everything, and poop happens.

I see the appeal to watching prof. wrestling more than watching a show like American gag-me-with-a-spoon Idol. At least there's talent involved in wrestling. :p

That dude was crazy. I remember when he fell off that cage.

I wish the Rock would wrestle again.:csad: He was one of the best wrestlers ever on the mic. And his chrisma was of the chart.

Hey.... now that's someone that Smallville should get to guest star on the show.:word:

The Rock was hilarious when he first came out. He wasn't as good once he became famous.

^Who wants to be a superhero: The Movie

That is the extent I want to see the Rock in a superhero movie. He would be just as bad as Hulk Hogan was.:o

The moves aren't rehearsed either, at least no more that a soccer player "rehearses" a free kick. i mean they don't prtaice the moves that day all anything. And pretty much every move hurts, whether done right or wrong.

Mick Foley was crazy, there's a guy who did like the pain. Was never a big fan of the Rock.

The moves aren't rehearsed either...
The fact that the moves have names tells me they're practiced, which is what we mean by "rehearsed." I'm not saying that they rehearse the performance before a match. I'm saying there's an acknowledgment between performers as a move occurs - on the fly - as to what they should expect, both by the audience as well as the wrestlers. Something as simple as knowing how to land can be the difference between going on to the next move as the audience cheers, or being carried out on a stretcher, which I assume happens occasionally. And I didn't say anything about enjoying the pain. There's a lot of bizarre people in this world. LOL I said they probably don't want to get "hurt" - meaning breaking bones. That sort of thing only results in unemployment until they heal, assuming they *can* heal...

Its ok MJD, I believe in the easter bunny too.

Yeah, so about that Clark in leather thing....

weird...

double posted but had another post in the middle...

On the other side of this episode, I wonder what it is that Clark has to do, to get himself put in prison.

My guess, is that he takes the time to learn the inner workings of the prison, then tattoos the floor plans onto his body, then robs a bank in order to get arrested.... oh wait... wrong show... Sorry.
