I think the ending was a problem several BP nominees this year. *Looks at Lincoln and Django*

But meanwhile, when Les Mis ended...

And that is a fairly accurate representation of the audience at the end of the movie - all 3 times I saw it, the theater sounded like a group therapy session. :funny:

Jackie didn't do a whole lot but De Niro deserves the nom. It's the best work he's done in years.

100% agree. I'm not one to value the politics of awards, but De Niro brought it for the first time in awhile. People used to wait for the next De Niro performance in his day. It was an event, a happening.

Never got the Di Caprio love. Sure he's a good actor, but at times people act as if he's a young De Niro or Penn, etc. Maybe it's just me, but he just strikes me as a 20 year old kid in everything he does (minus Inception).

Agreed about De Niro, but he struck you as a kid in The Departed?

The film that I thought DiCaprio should have won for was The Aviator. I still think it is his best performance.

Agreed!! I almost could not watch titanic because of this.. I could not buy that some kid was with that women. Anyways your not alone.. Its as if hes too young to play an adult,, and too old to play a child,, he is a good actor though.. Great performance in a boys life.

He did. He just doesn't have any real jam for me. Part of it is his voice. I actully liked him much more in the Basketball Diaries and Gilbert Grape, but he just hasn't matured too much beyond those films. He doesn't suit his parts imo, which is why I always see him acting in his roles as he's gotten older.

Agreed.

I think Leo still looked very boyish in The Departed. He wasn't meant to be an old character either but r did look like he was still 23.

It wasn't till Inception when I started to notice he was slightly aging. Still has a boyish face. I'm convinced Leo did some face exercises to increase his wrinkle ratio on his face.

I can't help but wonder how different Django Unchained would've flowed if Sally Menke was still with us. Pacing was it's biggest problem.

Leonardo will win an Oscar one day. It's just not his year, and to be honest Django wasn't that great of a movie.

DiCaprio's character in The Departed is 22. Supposed to be that young.

I figured so. He did just graduate from the Police Academy. I just didn't see him as a kid in the movie.

I'm actually quite content with this year's nominations. I thought Amour with its heavy subject would be too gloomy for the elderly Academy members. Also, I didn't believe it would gather nominations other than Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Screenplay. But with 5 nominations (in total), it clearly resonated with the older voters. Altogether, I'm just glad that they embraced the film.

Seeing Beasts of the Southern Wild gathering 4 nominations is a delightful surprise. Although I'm quite shocked to see Benh Zeitlin being nominated. I did consider the possibility of him obtaining a spot in the category of Best Director, but the chances of him beating more seasoned directors like Tarantino, Bigelow and Affleck were slim, so again I was really surprised to see his name. One thing that the Academy did right was nominating Quvenzhané Wallis. I was rooting for her but I wasn't sure if she would make the cut. She single-handedly carries the film and her nomination was very much deserved. While I'm overjoyed for Wallis, I wish Dwight Henry could have nab a nomination as well.

An interesting set of nominations to say the least. First, this is clearly a two horse race which is a shame, I was hoping for this to be an open year but alas no, it's Lincoln vs SLP. Big surprise is Argo, I was certain that would be a player but with no directing nod that film has no chance. Normally I would say Lincoln would be the strong favourite but with SLP se getting all four acting nods shows its a serious player within the largest branch of the Academy. Add to that David O'Russel never having won an Oscar going up against Spielberg whose won it twice. I'm dying to see both films now. On the plus side no Hooper nomination means I don't have to worry about sitting through Les Mis as that film has no chance.

Another movie that I wish had more love was surpringly 'The Grey'.

Same here. I would've love to see that one get a nod for best pic and best actor (and maybe best score).

wow not a single thing for the dark knight rises. the bat boards must be a war zone

Why do you guys think that Affleck missed the cut? I mean I think that Bigalow isn't in there because of the silly torture controversy played a role but I don't see what happened with Affleck. Did the movie peak too early or something?

Surprised at the lack of nominations in both Best Picture/Best Director for The Master. Best Cinematography even...

You get my point though, he's got a bit of that Ralph Macchio quality going on where he doesn't look his age. As he's gotten older he just seems much younger then the parts he's playing. I just don't buy him for the most part because of it. Good actor though, liked him in Inception.

I see what you're saying. Even in Inception, he looked younger than Marion Collart, though he's age appropriate.
