His two best chances IMO would have been Shutter Island and/or Catch Me if You Can. Those were IMO his best dramatic performances. Inception is up there, but had it not came out the same year as Shutter Island, I'd have it there.
I thought he'd get one for The Departed or Revolutionary Road actually lol.

Its obvious Lincoln is the clear favorite but with nominations in major categories for Silver Linings Playbook, seems that will be the darkhorse.

I remember still watching The Departed and thinking this was the one he was finally going to win for...

It seems the upsets are coming from the Skyfall and TDKR camps, I haven't seen one poster make mention of the Hobbit's perceived snub.

Like I said, I think Skyfall should have been nominated considering the technical awards they gave it, but I'm not suprised or shocked at all it didn't, nor am I losing sleep or upset about it.

But TDKR? Really? People actually expected that to get a BP nomination? To be bluntly honest, people who thought that would get a BP nomination need to get over themselves.

And from what I've seen, even the TDKR camp has been fairly low-key. Just some disappointment that it was left out of the technical awards.

Let's put SLP into perspective: Silver Linings Playbook got the Big Five in Nominations (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay). Four out the last Five movies nominated for those won Best Picture, and the one got didn't (Remains of the Day) was going up against a little known movie called Schindler's List.

The one knock against it though is that this movie is also going up against another Spielberg movie. :funny:

Or that Harvey's latest darling is up against a hit, critically-acclaimed Spielberg film. Shakespeare in Love vs. Saving Private Ryan, Part 2??

The Departed is the movie that changed my opinion about DiCaprio forever. I always thought he was this pretty-boy actor who always takes those playboy or cocky guy roles. Then The Departed was released and I was like, Damn, he's a man now.

But to give De Niro and Jackie Weaver best supporting nods? Obviously we know who's at work here.

Not bad, Danoyse.

In De Niro's defense, I felt he deserved it. He was a man with an anger problem who's trying to make genuine attempts to get closer with his son, but his anger pushes him away at times. I really enjoyed the scenes De Niro was in.

Weaver is very surprising, however. She did nothing but cry the whole movie :funny:. I honestly don't remember a single scene where I went "You know what, Weaver should get a nomination."

Obviously my opinion that SLP was good until the 2nd half colors my opinion but to have him over SLJ or DiCaprio I don't buy.

Exactly. To this day i think it's one of his best performances ever.

I haven't seen it yet, but I've heard nothing but good things about Cooper and the film. Try having a little faith in these crowds you dismiss. :cwink:

Just a broad generalization not aimed at you. Still, I apologize. ;)

I am surprised at the hate too. Bradley Cooper was excellent in it and I felt that he deserved a nomination, but wasn't going to get it because it was crowded year.

I'm glad that he did because because his performance was amazing. He played a guy who was funny at times (more of the time unintentionally), but also a guy who despite trying to find the "Silver Linings" in his life, felt helpless to his Bi-Polar Disorder. At the same time you couldn't help but cheer for the guy to win his ex-wife (and then later Jennifer Lawrence).

Indeed. In such depressing times as the last five years have been for people, that is a great message for a romantic comedy to have.

I have to say, I do think it's a shortcoming of the Academy that they have the 10 slots and were only able to nominate 9 films in a year with this many good films. Especially when 3 very well reviewed films made a billion dollars. Obviously, it's not a conspiracy and it's just the way the votes stacked, but I still think it's a flawed system if this is the best they can do.

Then again, there's always going to be a high level of subjectivity involved with trying to rank and award art.

It's funny that the year they do away with having 10 ends up being a year where they have more than 10 legitimate BP nominees. :funny:

I think this rule is best for the Oscars. Keep in mind, last year they didn't have 10 strong nominees. Neither did the year before. Not every year will produce 10 strong nominees so I think this is the best way to go.

It seems the upsets are coming from the Skyfall and TDKR camps, I haven't seen one poster make mention of the Hobbit's perceived snub.
I can understand TDKR being snubbed by the hoity toity judges but now why would Skyfall get a BP nominee, I didn't see anything that made it stand out.

And just because the LOTR trilogy won many awards why would The Hobbit be nominated? just to fill in the 10th slot?

I said it shouldn't equal one, not that a billion didn't in one or two cases.

After these surprises I'm surprised that some think that Chastin is a lock to win. Lawrence and Watts should not so easily be counted out. There seems to be a feeling in hollywood land that Watts might finally deserve a win after all these years and Lawrence has you know who in her corner and a showy but great performance in her back pocket. Until Chastin wins the SAG I ain't saying she's a lock.

Skyfall would have been a more deserving a BP nominee than TDKR.
