91st Annual Academy Awards

They're basically turning it into this.

Behind the screen categories are ALWAYS never given the same credit as the in front of (Actors and Actresses) as the Oscars are designed for the GA really who on the whole have no idea what roles mean or what it takes to get a film made, so this is just 'slap in the face' time so we can shoe horn the 'not as important' roles out and sell more s**t in the ad breaks, people won' notice. Yes they will. F**king annoys the s**t out of me, film making is like an iceberg, 10% seen above the water 90% not seen under it. The work that goes into making a film is largely not seen.

You literally don't have a movie without Cinematography and Editing. That's what's astounding to me. Cinematography is the only skill that evolved from the invention of movies.

And the oscars already do a separate type ceremony the night before. Eh, I would send set design and makeup along side animated feature to that.

“I find it depressing that they are doing this,” said cinematographer Caleb Deschanel, a nominee this year for “Never Look Away” from Sony Pictures Classics. “Hopefully it won’t be like the part of the show where they play clips from the Sci-Tech awards dinner. That always feels a bit sad, like they didn’t get invited to the real party.”

Sci-tech awards! Send them time consuming bastahs to that. lol

This could all be coincidence, but the mouse ain't nominated in any of the categories being cut as pointed out by oscar pundits.

Someone call Ja Rule on the phone and then Andy King!

I'm not into conspiracy theory nonsense but that doesn't make things look good for Disney.

I'm not generally into that stuff either but I'm into this one, lol.

Lettuce not act like that popular awards nonesense wasn't to help out the marvel mouse either. lol

I'm glad BP was nominated, but it kinda looks a bit odd now that disney owns the network. But I lost my tinfoil hat. I just like making fun of the mouse and their clean cut image that is bs behind the scenes. lol

It's already a disgrace that this happened, but if this is reason this happened then that is an entirely different level of deplorable.

There was also that rumor about them wanting the Avengers cast to host the Oscars.

Looks like I'll be watching the Alliance of American Football instead. Cutting those categories for commercials is disgraceful. Utterly disgraceful.

Yeah, I've watched the Oscars every year since 1995. This is the first year I'm genuinely thinking of skipping. It's too much of a **** show.

I'm never on board with the Disney/Marvel conspiracies either but this one I am. :funny:

I mean, I'm sure that wasn't just a rumor, but it's also normal corporate synergy BS. Any parent company whose network hosts these awards shows makes a point to get their stars presenting and the brand representing. That's been going on for years, and is supposed to be one of the built-in incentives to bid for those broadcast rights.

Cutting from the broadcast the categories that don't feature your parent companies' movies takes things to a whole new, much dirtier level, though.

A clarification from the Academy Awards:

"No one is being removed from either the in-theater or the ABC live broadcast. This year, in a voluntary rotation that will change each year, four awards will be given live in an uninterrupted progression--- as always--They will be slightly edited off-line in the trailer (such as the walk up from seat to stage)--- as has been done for years with the Tony broadcast—and then placed live into the ongoing show. It should be seamless and most viewers won’t notice."

They say "voluntary", but clearly cinematographers didnt volunteer:

Kees van Oostrum, president of the American Society of Cinematographers, released a letter today:

Dear members of the ASC,
Yesterday afternoon the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced that the Best Cinematography presentation — as well as the awards for Film Editing, Live-Action Short and Make-up and Hair Styling — would not be broadcast live but presented in a delayed and edited version during the televised Oscar ceremony. This decision was apparently made in order to shorten the length of the Academy Awards broadcast.

After receiving many comments on this matter from ASC members, I think I speak for many of them in declaring this a most unfortunate decision. We consider filmmaking to be a collaborative effort where the responsibilities of the director, cinematographer, editor and other crafts often intersect. This decision could be perceived as a separation and division of this creative process, thus minimizing our fundamental creative contributions.

The Academy is an important institution that represents our artistry in the eyes of the world. Since the organization’s inception 91 years ago, the Academy Awards have honored cinematographers’ talent, craft and contributions to the filmmaking process, but we cannot quietly condone this decision without protest.

Kees van Oostrum
ASC President

"The decision can only be seen as a diminution of our contribution," Van Oostrum said Variety. "It’s absolutely the wrong message. My phone has been ringing off the hook. It also diminishes the contribution of editors, with whom we collaborate very closely."

Let's not for get the Make Up Artists too.

Apparently it was Lady Gaga who stood up to ABC and said she wouldn't perform if there were only going to be two of the nominated songs performed on the night, so hopefully there's enough blowback from the industry that this gets changed.

"Rotation," huh? Who wants to bet as long as the Oscars are on ABC that categories Disney movies are nominated in will never be "volunteered" to get the axe.

Seriously, cinematography is one of the most important craft Oscars. This is about as voluntary as the Hunger Games.
