91st Annual Academy Awards

I knew it was the reason, I just don't know whether the fanbase and film industry really explose after that snub :funny:

Must be one of the few movies that got into all the Guilds and still miss the Oscar.

It was pretty much in top 5 of most critic lists that year. And I do think the general public viewed it was a gamechanger for comic book film, that they can be serious without being overly dour like the Burton movies.

I can still remember being on this forum at 2am in the morning along with god knows how many other fans, all collectively anticipating the nominations.

The mood was a level of excitement that was off the charts, probably bigger than the release of the film itself.

Ehhh...I would not go that far. The release of the movie was pretty dang exciting, especially for box office nerds like me. It broke a lot of records at the time, which was amazing to watch because Batman Begins was nowhere near that kind of financial performance.

Black Panther winning over Fallout for stunts when most of its "stunts" are CGI is as big of a joke as the idea of Black Panther and Bohemian Rhapsody being Best Picture frontrunners.

It's obvious pandering nonsense like this that's one of various reasons why people don't take the Oscars seriously anymore. Because half of the awards are so obviously not about who was actually best.

1) Someone just pointed out that no one who could’ve made it happen campaigned for Fallout, so you can’t really blame BP for that.

2) Pandering? How? To whom? What SJW cares about Best Stunts?

The Oscars have always been political. Quality is sometimes a factor but it's not usually the major one.

There's a really good book called "Inside Oscar" that details the history of the awards year by year. It's very long but I thought it does a great job of showing just what goes into the process every year.

This year I think the BP winner will probably be Roma. I think Bale should win over Malek, I liked Rami in BR but wasn't blown away and I was constantly distracted by how much trouble he seemed to be having with his fake teeth.

My best guess right now is Roma right now, too.
But The Favorite could surprise everybody.

I think we can safely say A Star is Born will not get any awards.

It's really getting snobbed lol. I thought it was given it would get best actress, picture and actor.

I was genuinely surprised and impressed Emily got her win from A Quiet Place. I guarantee Kendrick Lamar will be taking Best Original Song at the Oscars instead of Shallow.

Just out of curiosity, what makes some of you so certain that Roma is a heavy contender for Best Picture? The fact that it’ll win for Best Foreign Film all but kicks it out of the running for Best Picture. No foreign language film has ever won Best Picture for that reason.

Yeah I would love to see Kendrick Lamar win, but the song from Star is much more relevant and integral to that movie, which is what a "Best Song" should be.

Xenophobia at its best. Thanks Academy. :o

All The Stars is a great song but I'd be shocked if it won over Shallow. I wouldn't be mad, but Gaga's bringing Cooper up on stage in Vegas, they've turned all their attention to promoting that.

My money is on Greenbook for best picture!

I hope it is, just so I can watch AwardsWatch completely self-implode.

They have to appeal to the youths. :p

I would love it if All The Stars wins it over Shallow.

Ok can we have a discussion about Best Picture winners from the last 25 years? Which one is the best, and which one was the most undeserved?

Crash has to be the most undeserved right? I looked at the competition that year (Brokeback, Capote, Good Night & Good Luck, Munich) and the competition was pretty weak.

Silence of the Lambs has to be the most deserving and best of the last 25 years. It's the only movie out of the list I would rewatch over the rest.

Here's the list:
  • 2017 - "Moonlight"
  • 2016 - "Spotlight"
  • 2015 - "Birdman"
  • 2014 - "12 Years a Slave"
  • 2013 - "Argo"
  • 2012 - "The Artist"
  • 2011 - "The King's Speech"
  • 2010 - "The Hurt Locker"
  • 2009 - "Slumdog Millionaire"
  • 2008 - "No Country for Old Men"
  • 2007 - "The Departed"
  • 2006 - "Crash"
  • 2005 - "Million Dollar Baby"
  • 2004 - "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King"
  • 2003 - "Chicago"
  • 2002 - "A Beautiful Mind"
  • 2001 - "Gladiator"
  • 2000 - "American Beauty"
  • 1999 - "Shakespeare in Love"
  • 1998 - "Titanic"
  • 1997 - "The English Patient"
  • 1996 - "Braveheart"
  • 1995 - "Forrest Gump"
  • 1994 - "Schindler’s List"
  • 1993 - "Unforgiven"
  • 1992 - "The Silence of the Lambs"

The Shawshank Redemption hands down should have won over Forrest Gump and Brokeback Mountain was probably the best of its field, certainly more than Crash.

Also Shakespeare In Love winning over Saving Private Ryan was and always will be a joke.

My Lord of the Rings bias is showing, but frankly I think every LOTR movie should have won BP in their years. Certainly over Chicago.

1995 was probably the most competitive year for BP.

You had:

Forrest Gump
Pulp Fiction
Shawshank
Quiz Show
Four Weddings and a Funeral

To me that was a great selection because the movies were so diverse and all popular with both critics and general audiences. I could make an argument for each one why it should have won. Personally, Pulp Fiction probably should have one, but all of them have made a lasting mark in cinematic history.

For me personally, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King was the most satisfying Best Picture win of the last 25 years. If it were up to me, all three Lord of the Rings films would have won their respective years, but I digress. After that, I'd probably say No Country for Old Men.

The worst is unquestionably Crash. The other big offenders are Forrest Gump, Shakespeare in Love, and A Beautiful Mind.
