Just a few thoughts as we're waiting for the nominations.

1. NOMADLAND remains the frontrunner. I suppose TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7 is its chief rival. MINARI looks like a dark horse. I can't see anyone else winning Best Picture at this point.

2. Chadwick Boseman is a lock for Best Actor.

3. Netflix will almost certainly come out with the most nominations. But will it translate to wins? Amazon looks like it will compete in wins. Best Supporting Actress might be the tiebreaker.

4. Surprises? There seems to be some love for Mads Mikkelson post-Bafta nominations. Andra Day seems to have gotten into the conversation

Supporting Actress is so up in the air. Maria Bakalova seems like the only thing closest to a lock and I'm still not 100% sure she'll get in. I love that it's so unpredictable this year.

Daniel Kayuula is a lock for Best Supporting Actor for Judas and the Black Messiah

Yeah, Leslie Odom Jr. seemed to be the favorite for a long while, but I'd be shocked now if Kayuula doesn't get it. They're both deserving, so no complaints from me, as long as Paul Raci gets a nom too.

Finally Lakeith gets some recognition for his role in Judas, but it looks like it was at the expense of a nod for Delroy which is a damn shame.

I'm thinking Boseman and Kaluuya are frontrunners for the Actor categories.

Gary Oldman is once again Public Enemy #1 on Film Twitter. I love it. :funny:

King went from being snubbed through the first 30 years of his career to getting two nominations and a win in the last ten. Thrilled to see him getting his due.

The Actor categories are locked (Boseman and Kaluuya). The drama is in the two Actress categories.

Who did they think he “stole” a nomination from?

These outrages are so funny to me especially when they’re aimed at those who are secured in their spots. So, no, they did not steal any of those spots. If you want to get mad, get mad at the fringe nominees as they’re the ones who “stole” a nod from your fave.

Delroy Lindo, Tahar Rahim and Mads Mikkelsen. They seriously cannot stand Oldman.

But I really don't know what they expected? Mank's been performing well within the industry for weeks now. It leads the Oscars this year with ten nominations. He was an "automatic box check" nominee if ever there was one, just like DiCaprio last year.

Also, I am dying at the Stanfield nomination in Supporting. Kaluuya going Supporting? I can understand that. Fine. But Stanfield too? Who the **** is the Lead of that film then? :funny:

Exactly. It doesn’t matter whether he deserves it or not. He’s had that spot locked a long time ago. :funny: Bale always get the same hate too even when he hits all the precursors and is securely in the top 3 more or less.

Finally Lakeith gets some recognition for his role in Judas, but it looks like it was at the expense of a nod for Delroy which is a damn shame.

Lindo was being touted as lead, so it was Oldman or Yuen that were the likely last across.

And it's silly that Judas and the Black Messiah apparently has no lead actors. The ensemble isn't even that large.

Considering that Oldman has no shot at winning and has plenty of previous nominations and a win, I don't hold it against anyone for thinking he didn't need the nomination. I think he's fine, albeit too old, but nobody thinks it's his best performance.

I kind of think Mank is likely to be this year's American Hustle or The Irishman. Up for a ton, but likely to go home with very little or none.

Also, I am dying at the Stanfield nomination in Supporting. Kaluuya going Supporting? I can understand that. Fine. But Stanfield too? Who the **** is the Lead of that film then? :funny:
Personally I thought both Kaluuya and Stanfield's roles in JATBM qualify as lead roles but I think the Academy did that on purpose to secure a win for Boseman, which I'm fine with since A. it's Chadwick and B. this is an unorthodox year for the show anyway.

I will be watching the Oscars just to see who doesn't dress up for their Zoom speeches. I enjoyed seeing Jason Sudeikis in a hoodie during the Golden Globe Awards.
