94th Annual Academy Awards

I haven’t seen Power of the Dog but from what I heard about it, it just seems more of an Oscar baity movie than the others nominated.

I wouldn't even call it Oscar baity compared to the other films. Knock, Knock, maybe. But Power of the Dog, if it came out earlier in the year, I don't know if it would've racked up that many nominations.

Again, I liked the film, even though it wasn't one of my top 10 of the year, but I'm surprised that it got as many nominations as it did.

That happens every year. Remember Marriage Story? Neither do I. (Yes, you could be the one who loves it, just saying it’s kind of disappeared from conversation lol).
I remember it but only because of the memes.

But besides that, the difference is that Marriage Story was never a frontrunner for Best Picture.

Most Oscar films disappear from the conversation (whether they debut streaming or theatrical). The more recent films just don’t have that same cultural impact like they used to, IMO.

I still see a lot of praise for it, Driver's performance in general. But that year Parasite won, and it's still hugely relevant. Way too soon to be talking which movies from such a recent year have held up to their initial hype, though, IMO.

Also, what are we calling "Oscar Bait" these days? Because if Power of the Dog qualifies for some of y'all, I feel like literally any drama could.

I think the only movie nominated that made it to my top 10 is CODA.

This reeks of ratings desperation. They're not even trying to hide it.
From what we've seen leaked, ABC (and most likely Chapek calling the shots) is literally holding the broadcast hostage. It's freaking embarrassing for everyone involved and so incredibly disrespectful to the artists.

I will say despite all that, I have been seeing the Oscars being promoted heavily this year.

Amy Schummer stole jokes from the late great, Patrice Oneal. She deserves to bomb just for that, but Hall and Sykes will carry her for most of it.

Can't wait to see how bad the ratings dip this year.

Only have Coda left to watch, but man, what a ****** year for Oscar films.

Zola
Red Rocket
The Green Knight

three films which were as noteworthy as 'Power of The Dog', if we keeping it real. They got nothin.
Or Pig, Shiva Baby, Nine Days, Passing...

But it's all about the campaign, sadly. Money rules the awards season these days, just like everything else
Ugh. I'm gonna feel so bad for CODA if it wins; it's gonna catch so much hate. And it doesn't deserve it, it's perfectly fine. But it would not be a good winner IMO.
This is insane. It's embarrassing enough that she wasn't nominated for the lead role in one of the most nominated movies of the year. Like if Cumberbatch got snubbed for TPOTD. But then to not bring her as a presenter? TO NOT EVEN INVITE HER? They say they want to up the ratings, and then overlook the star with the biggest internet presence for young people.

No offense to Zegler but I doubt her attendance would have made any impact to the ratings. But I agree she should have been given an invite at least.

It's messed up, but aren't they having a smaller audience due to COVID? Maybe she was one of the ones they unfortunately had to leave out due to audience size. Although I'm not defending them for that at all since they're bringing in the whole cast of Encanto to perform a song that isn't even nominated so they clearly could have made room for Zegler.

What makes you say that? The only Best Picture winner in the past decade or so to really have a hate bandwagon was Green Book, and IMO that wasn't entirely unjustified.

Green Book is the only one from the last four years that was broadly seen as undeserving and yeah, it certainly deserved the backlash. But with CODA, I just feel like it will get treated like The King's Speech. I perfectly fine, enjoyable movie that will be unfairly dumped on if it beats out a selection of other movies more people are rooting for.

Do people really dump on The King's Speech all that much though? It's not a bad movie at all, it was just surprising to many that it beat out The Social Network. Even then, I wouldn't say it was anywhere near as controversial as Crash beating Brokeback Mountain.

I don't think CODA would get much backlash at all if it won. If anything I think it would get more eyes on it that normally wouldn't have given it a chance.

Maybe. I still see a lot of derision directed at King's Speech these days, though probably less so than when it first happened. So maybe CODA will turn out fine. (I personally don't see it winning, but who knows) But we can all agree that Crash over Brokeback Mountain remains the worst BP call of the century.
