from the "With Star Trek's success, what comes next" thread(wow, I called this one and I was right even earlier than I thought I would be)...

-Not soon, but I predict within 10 years, we'll have a buffy the vampire slayer remake film that incorporates many elements of the old tv series and comics we've come to know and love. How soon depends on if Whedon will be allowed to have some way of bringing back the old cast for a reunion movie on the big screen. If that never happens, a remake that whedon will produce but not write or direct will probably happen one day.

Now, check THIS out(from aintitcool)..

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER remake without Whedon or anything developed from the TV show... seriously...
Hey folks, Harry here and man do I have the scratchiest head scratcher that I've seen in a long goddamn time. I think just about all of us would be interested in a real theatrical launch of a feature version of the BUFFY character as was lovingly developed and handled by Joss Whedon.

But that's not what they're gonna do.

This new film is being developed with the original directing and producing team of the BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER feature - which made all the impact of a shaving cream pie. It's being developed at Vertigo Entertainment, According to Borys Kit at The Hollywood Reporter which is run by the usually very astute Roy Lee and Doug Davison.

Now - apparently they're not ruling out Whedon coming aboard, but apparently they're taking meetings with a number of writers and Whedon would have to audition like everyone else. It seems Roy Lee is the one that has taken control here. And like I said, he's usually someone that I would trust - it just feels weird to announce before approaching Whedon first. Sort of like when McG and crew announced SPACED before talking with the real SPACED team.

I don't know if I would want to start slapping them every which way regarding continuity, etc... but without Whedon I know they'll instantly be met with a wall of fan hostility, that I doubt any other direction will calm.

I'm curious(as Buffy is my favorite show of all time ) but I'm skeptical without Whedon.

1992's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"

A new incarnation of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" could be coming to the big screen.

"Buffy" creator Joss Whedon isn't involved and it's not set up at a studio, but Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment are working with original movie director Fran Rubel Kuzui and her husband, Kaz Kuzui, on what is being labeled a remake or relaunch, but not a sequel or prequel.

While Whedon is the person most associated with "Buffy," Kuzui and her Kuzui Enterprises have held onto the rights since the beginning, when she discovered the "Buffy" script from then-unknown Whedon. She developed the script while her husband put together the financing to make the 1992 movie, which was released by Fox.

Kuzui later teamed with Gail Berman, then president of Sandollar Television, bringing back Whedon to make the TV series, which was produced by Fox TV and launched on the WB in 1997. Kuzui and Sandollar received executive producer credits on "Buffy" and its spinoff, "Angel."

The new "Buffy" film, however, would have no connection to the TV series, nor would it use popular supporting characters like Angel, Willow, Xander or Spike. Vertigo and Kuzui are looking to restart the story line without trampling on the beloved existing universe created by Whedon, putting the parties in a similar situation faced by Paramount, J.J. Abrams and his crew when relaunching "Star Trek."

One of the underlying ideas of "Buffy" allows Vertigo and Kuzui to do just that: that each generation has its own vampire slayer to protect it. The goal would be to make a darker, event-sized movie that would, of course, have franchise potential.

The parties are meeting with writers and hearing takes, and later will look for a home for the project. The producers do not rule out Whedon's involvement but have not yet reached out to him.Speaking from Tokyo, Fran Kuzui said the company is constantly approached not only about sequels but theater, video games and foreign remakes for "Buffy." When Vertigo's Lee contacted them, they were intrigued.

"It was Roy's interest in taking Buffy into a new place that grabbed us," she said, noting that original exec producer Sandy Gallin also was consulted. "It was based on our respect for what he does, and his particular sensitivity to Asian filmmakers, that we wanted to work with him."

Kuzui, who is prepping do direct a movie in Japan in the fall, added: "Everything has its moment. Every movie takes on a life at some point, and this seems like the moment to do this."

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!:cmad::cmad::cmad:

I concur! Why would Hollywood even attempt to make a Buffy movie without the original series cast and NO...JOSS....WHEDON!:wow:

:whatever: Yeah, I'll pass! The new cast will probably be filled with a bunch of horrible Disney channel rejects with Jamie Lynn Spears as Buffy and one of the Jonas brothers as Angel! This doesn't even seem like a movie for the fans of the show, just some crappy project to capitalize on the Twilight craze!

I'm intrigued but worried. On the one hand, I've always wanted to see an "event level" Buffy film in theatres but starting totally from scratch without even using the characters fans know and love(other than Buffy herself), I think that might be a bad idea. Also, I'd rather have the tv show casts of both Buffy and Angel be featured. It could be an finale of sorts to their entire universe but told in a way that maybe general audiences can understand wihout having seen every episode of the shows. Maybe something like what Serenity ended up being.

Yeah, this would be the perfect opportunity for Joss to do a Serenity type fillm for the Buffyverse. Why reboot a film franchise of a film franchise that dead quickly after it's release! There is a reason Buffy worked successfully as a series, mostly because of it's amazing cast and the Joss Whedon in control. Take those away...and well.....all I see is crap!

Yeah, I"m not sure if the basic Buffy concept is strong enough on it's own without all the the things Whedon built around itfor the tv show(the scooby gang, the various season long villains, all the crazy stuff about vampires having or not having souls).

Although my mouth is still on the floor at the thought of a Whedon-less Buffy, I was also just as adamant against a Shatner-less Star Trek and was proven wrong.

Maybe there is no such thing as a defining performance anymore, if ever. Abram's Trek certainly proved me wrong because I totally thought TOS was something that couldn't work outside it's original era and actors.

I'm sure nerd outrage will make them reconsider or just push through.

There's a difference here: this is a quick cash-in. And Star Trek still had the original characters.

The original movie didn't do crap, besides having the great Paul Reubens. It was the TV show that built the fanbase, and to do a movie that has nothing to do with that is almost absurd.

Without the TV show, you wouldn't have this remake. Image making Sex & the City: the movie without the main characters from the TV show.

I think you could get away with Buffy and a Watcher plus a new friend. The Scooby gang fit a serialized tv format. You wouldn't have as much time to flesh out the characters in movie time so you could boil it down to one friend and a love interest, imo.

I think Hollywood is underestimating the general public.

There's a difference between rebooting a series that needs it, and a quick cash-in on a poplular name. This belongs to category number two.

What a horrible idea. They should've just left this alone.

All I have to say is...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

That is all.

YEa i was reading about this an hr ago. what a poor move not having it based off the buffy/angel tv shows and no whedon invovled at all.

Joss hates these guys they had little to no say in the series and he bad mouths them constantly in the box sets for both series. I hope he steps into prevent this.

Hope it will at least be better than the first Buffy movie & Twilight.

Buffy isn't even that popular per say, it's more of a cult phenomenon. All the hard core Whedonites aren't going to want anything to do with this. If this actually goes through as planned it will be a massive backfire.

I have ZERO interest in this without Whedon's involvement. Forget rebooting Buffy, if they want to have a Slayer film, make a Fray movie, and I'm there!

big budget and a lot of action........................ohhh yeah

This is just wrong in so many ways. Though someone brought up a good point in another forum, legally they cant even use anyone from the show except for the basic Buffy concept and name since all the other charecters are owned by Joss.

All I can say is who cares. People are getting to angry over this.

Its not like shes a big name character like alot of the other characters who've had movies out in the recent years.

SMG wanted to get away from the Buffy name and be a "movie actress" Cause you know that worked.:hehe::o

What if they took Terminator(or something else YOU love) and made him into an time travelling angry monkey...that talks like Arnold Schwarzennegger. He still wanted to kill John Connor(who's now a goth)...but he's a monkey. By only using Buffy herself and NOTHING else from the show, that's the kind of franchise rape that is occuring.

Also, the Star Trek comparison people keep saying is invalid. Star Trek by Abrams was still the SAME CHARACTERS AND BASIC STORY IDEAS just with better effects and an different cast. I think it'll be a couple of decades before that could apply to Buffy. If they dont' want the original cast(which is still pretty f*'d up), then I'm not TOTALLY against recasting for a bigscreen film if they have the same characters and basic story ideas.

This is even dumber though than how Glen Larson is trying to remake BSG...AGAIN already after Moore's acclaimed remake show just ended.
