AFI's NEW TOP 100

I'd say I have seen about 80% of these movies. Only ones I haven't seen are the silent movies, and a couple of the classics (such as Mr. Smith Goes to Washington).

We are in total agreement here. I also liked Tarzan more.

And I'm just talking about `90s animated films. Toy Story is a good movie, but it probably wouldn't even make my top 10 animated films list.

One time I went to Hot Topic and they were playing that Face To Face song from Batman Returns. I said to my friend, "only at Hot Topic."

I was surprised, kinda, to see so many of Marty's films up there. lol They are all damn good but i think it was a tie between him Hitchcock and Spielberg to see who had the most. lol

I was shocked Raging Bull was #4. Great movie, but I saw several movies on the list I thought were better that were much lower.

why were you surprised? Marty films have always been popular with these AFI lists.

Yeah, Hitchcock was a genious. Him and Steven deserve all the movies they had on the list, and maybe even one or two more.

It's not even the best Marty movie. I like Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, After Hours, and Goodfellas a lot more.

Well to be honest im 18 so I have just started getting big into the film watching and i didnt realize just how respected Marty's films were. I havent seen a couple and this really pushes me to.

True. Marty has made better movies. I mean, this was also ahead of One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest? The Godfather Part II? Schindler's List? etc. I could keep going.

It didn't deserve to be that high.

Most Marty films are great. The King of Comedy is the only exception. :o

It was a good list but one question was Batman on it? I dont think it was but i thought maybe it or Superman might be.

Marty is definately one of the best directors. 90% of his movies are genious (few exceptions).

Very underrated movie of his is The Last Temptation of Christ. I am an athiest, but this is my 2nd favorite Marty movie.

No superheroes. They get no respect. I thought Superman: The Movie had a lower end chance.

Well I would think since it started a trend and of the directors who were talking it might have a chance, also Superman is an AMERICAN icon. It was quite revolutionary for its time as well.

If the third act of Superman had kept up with the utter beauty and grace of the first two acts it would have.

I actually do think that Raging Bull is Scorcese's best film, but I just can't buy into the idea that it is better than Gone with the Wind, Singing in the Rain and Lawrence of Arabia.

One thing that this list highlights though is just how crummy the last ten years have been for cinema. There have been some good and entertaining films to be sure, but LOTR is the only one I would consider a true classic deserving of being on this list. That's pathetic when you think about it. Going back to The Jazz Singer in '27 I can't even think of a ten year period so devoid of classic films.

True. The ending is kind of weak. It has the best 2 acts of any superhero movie, but the ending brings it down.

I agree. The shot of young Clark standing next to Martha in the swaying field of wheat is some of the most beautiful photography I've ever seen in a superhero film and some of the best in any film...period.

Superman will make it, eventually, but it better not make it before some other much deserving films like JP and Lion King (to replace the horrible choice of Toy Story even though it did create a sub genre) get put up there.

I agree, that is a great scene.

My favorite scene in the movie is Jor-El giving Kal-El the speech before sending him to Earth. Beautifully done, and I think Krypton looked outstanding in the movie. This is probably my favorite comic book movie scene, period.

Well...you can't top Brando, as can be seen in Superman Returns, although Routh gave that speech a nice try.

Only good scene in SR (other than the opening credits).

Brando is a great actor, and that speech is evidence of it. I don't know if I will see another comic movie scene that will top this one for me.

Some films on this list kind of spook me...

Titanic (are they just trying to justify it's BO grosses)? Spartacus (never understood why this movie was such a big deal)? American Graffiti (did Lucas get to vote more than once)? And why is A Clockwork Orange ahead of Shawshank Redemption and Silence of the Lambs?

Some people...
