AFI's NEW TOP 100

why do they do this every year. They never really change anything. Now if they put something like the thing, or evil dead 2. Then yeah thats a change. Then I might start likeing these lists.
i think they only do this every 10 years

I watched the AFi thing the last 3 years. It always the same dumb list. I hate it.

P.S. I'm sorry to see My Fair Lady off the list in place of Toy Story. But seeing Do The Right Thing and LOTR up there made up for it. I can't believe how high up The Searchers jumped. I also think Goodfellas deserved a place in the top 50 before Rocky.

Oh well.

No they do smaller tv specials where they talk about best heros and villans, comedys, stuff like that. The lists of those are pretty much what the main list is.

They only do this list every 10 years. They've done best romances, susepnnses, heros/villains and quotes (among others I can't remember) but not best of.

You realize that the list changes. You see movies like Platoon get reevaluated and added and flavors of the year disappear (like Fargo). But the reason a lot of these movies are near the top of every list is because THEY ARE THE THAT GOOD. Name a better villain than Hannibal Lecter, Darth Vader and the shark in Jaws. Or better heroes than Atticus Finch, Indiana Jones and James Bond?

Oh well, different tastes.

For example I love Sam RAimi, but there is no way on earth I think Evil Dead 2 is among the 100 greatest films ever made. Crap, I think it's the worst of its trilogy, anyway.

But as I say, different tastes, really.

Im not saying Evil dead is a great movie. I just put it down saying they need to add stuff more like it. Oh and darth vader is a lame villan. Ever sense we found out he is just some little boy with emo problems with his girlfriend, same goes for Lecter.

Eh?

the heroes and villains list I think were befoer Ep. I and II and cinematically nothing has ever come across as instant "pure evil badass" as when Vader marched across the screen in the original Star Wars.

But you want more o****erculture up there? Well I love Evil Dead, which you listed as part II needing to be there, but I think they look for different things.

I'm glad Pulp Fiction is up there for example. I think more indies should be there too but considering it is covering the American history of cinema which is mostly HOllywood spanning back 100 years, it is really hard to do when you can pick movies like Sunset Blvd, Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, Midnight Cowboy, Network, The Godfather, All the Presidents Men, Lawerence of Arabia, Bridge on the River Kwai, On the Waterfront and other examples of CLASSIC and flawless filmmaking.

It takes something to really leave a residence to join a list like that. Hence I'm happy to see Do The Right Thing on there and hope to see them creep up the list and more to join as we go.

Im not a big fan of Pulp fiction. I told people at filmschool I didn't like it, and holy crap I thought they were going to hang me.

When I was a kid that scene was great. But now as soon as I see Vaders face its hard for me to hold back the laughter. Ahh that NOOOOOO scene in ep 3 was funny.

What the **** they bumped off My Fair LAdy for Toy Story :cmad: Intolerance instead of Birth of a Nation :cmad: I don't know personally I like both lists, I'm leaning toward the first list since the new list seems to just be bending toward more popular movies than what's really better... For instance they took off The Third Man, you realize what a mastery of craft that film is and how many film-makers have been inspired by it? Then again the films added to the new list are good too... I don't know I'm really torn here... However in the end I think I'm feeling the old list better, however it's nice to see anotehr Marx brothers film added to the list.

I can understand taking off the third men its a british movie. This is the American film instatute. They just want american films.

I'm so tired of Citizen Kane getting #1 every single time.

...it really isn't that good. :o

They put it on there for the cam angles being so low. No one ever thought of digging holes to put the cam in it for those kinds of angles.

A wonderful technique.

But that hardly makes it the best film ever.

My biggest snub is Patton, which I thought was too low the first time. One of the most memorable films ever and it always seems to be underrated by the AFI.

AFI doesn't like Evil Dead 2 and The Thing either. :csad:

Yeah, that disappointed me as well. I don't think we needed Toy Story or LOTR personally.

Patton has it all except for some accuracy snafus. George C. Scott as Patton is easily in the top 10 best casting decisions ever.

There's a new AFI idea: AFI's Top Casting whatever Ever.
