Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - 3x10 - "Maveth" - Discussion Thread

It would be hard to keep Ward around next season unless they turn him into this guy:

latest

Technically a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent these days...

So this god-like reality warping inhuman that laid waste to a planet was temporarily stopped by a flare gun... Come on.

I'm also very disappointed that they killed Ward. And no, that creature at the end isn't Ward it's an entirely different character that is wearing his body.

That's why I'm thinking Hive. The Hive has certain limitations of its host, including conditions the host has prior to possession (decayed leg) and certain basic human limitations (Will was presumably flammable, as humans tend to be).

One good point (amongst few in this episode for me)
Coulson leaves his arm behind, this must lead to laser finger or Deathlok rocket launchers!

My name for IT is just Hydra Prime for right now.

Sad that evil ward is dead and replace by the inhuman god.
If the "being" found Malick, he still have access to Ward's memories, but the real ward is gone, I guess.

IMO Ward is the best original character in the MCU. Im glad he is back at least in some capacity

It seems to have a dislike for light/fire. The entity is the cause of the desolation on the planet so perhaps he controls the weather/sun.

Remember at the end of Jemma's planet episode, Will was shown with the sun rising and then it went dark again. Perhaps this was The Hive taking over Will's body..?

It was a decent finale (Coulson killing Ward was hardcore, and I say that as someone who really liked Ward as a villain). But, I felt that too many important/interesting things happened offscreen:

-Remember how HYDRA was using the ACTU to stockpile Inhumans as weapons (and apparently succeeding)? Doesn't matter because Lash just kills them all OFFSCREEN, with just a couple of lines from May explaining it.

-So Will DID die protecting Simmons (called that btw), OFFSCREEN.

-Bobbi takes out like a dozen HYDEA goosn, OFFSCREEN.

-The Inhuman god-thing possessing Ward's body (which is a cool idea btw), and escapes, OFFSCREEN. They'd better have a really good explanation for how he escaped btw.

-Etc.

For a "momentous" mid-season finale, this trend was disappointing.

Almost like it was done on the cheap!!
Has the budget all been spent??

Oh and this episode didn't really do anything to sell me on the "lets fridge Rosalind" idea. If anything, it made me dislike it even more. I'm sorry, but that "pillow talk shot" of her right before Coulson kills Ward (called that to btw) made me groan.

Blame Jemma. She had to be stupid and trust a mass murderer.

Through the portal, like everyone else.

The portal was closing,
Then we get ten minutes while Coulson and Fitz get out
Then they leave the building while it explodes around them.
Still leaving time for Ward / monster to get through the portal and escape.
Something it has been unable to do for thousands of years!

The action was definitely lacking, especially in comparison to both of last year's finales. The stage was set for a big time battle between Daisy's Nuhumans and a team of Hydra goons led by Telekinisis guy, and all we got were some mild power displays and some melted bullets (can we call the new guy Melter yet?). "Pseudo-Ward" sneaking through the portal could pay off this spring, but the reveal that the ancient inhuman god is a brain parasite was also a tad underwhelming.

A lot of questions from this episode.

1) Is Maveth an Inhuman or an alien? That is a pretty substantial change, from a human to a worm, if he is Inhuman.

2) Those 9 cities, were they inhabited by inhumans, humans, or aliens? Something Maveth said about reaching their potential invokes Inhumans, but who knows? If they were human or Inhuman cities, this invokes a kind of Stargate feel with the obelisk taking the place of the Stargate.

3) If Maveth is Inhuman, how did he survive so long? Is he immortal?

4) How long does a dead host body last? In 4772 we saw him dressed as an astronaut, which i then assumed was a vision, but now think was him in the body of one of the dead astronauts who had been dead a decade. Will's body was presumably damaged in the fight when Simmons escaped the planet no long before this episode, but the decay was pretty advanced. Ward's body is pretty banged up. Will it rot? Not looking forward to WardZombie.

Poor Ward :(
He got what was coming to him.

I assume Inhuman worm parasites have access to Ward's memories.
Soooo what was the ancient city? Wasn't sure if it was a reference to Attilan or just some other possible Inhuman city.

I think it was just another alien city.

Attilan is most likely being saved for the Inhumans movie.

I wonder if telekinetic Mark Dacascos survived?

a good episode but it was over sold before hand. a happy ending for everyone but Will. Ward got over his closure issues, Malick got his prophet, coulson got his revenge, fitz and simmons got each other. skye got her team.

This inhuman, whats its power set, just that it can take over bodies? taught mac would bite the bullet, sad to see that ward go, he was a likeable villain. but dalton is a good actor and has done hard turns before. he'll pull this off.

I don't think so... it was explained in that episode, because they were at/near one of the poles of the planet, the sun would only rise in that location every 18 years and would only last for a short time. It going dark again was just the sun setting at that location again.

Where did you hear Simon was a Shield agent? Sitwell was killed in the comics too and returned a Zombie and is on the new Howling Commandos of Shield

Simon was recruited by Coulson (alongside Frankenstein's Monster, Man-Thing, and The Living Mummy) to help fight Dormammu in the current S.H.I.E.L.D. series. I think it's the most recent issue available on Unlimited.

EDIT: Double checked, and it was indeed Simon in the issue. Coulson specifically calls him Simon Garth, not Zombie, and the Zombie has an "S" medallion.

All this said, I was being a smartalec and joking that Ward would have to be an undead zombie to somehow return to the S.H.I.E.L.D. team.

I haven't seen that one yet. Interesting, Man-Thing seems like a Fav of shield lately

Edit:the S medallion is with some group I think I read somewhere

I loved this episode so much. Even though Ward deserved it, I still had a "Nooooo!!" moment when Coulson killed him. I think Ward was a great villain, made all the better by his personal history with everyone. He was the first member of Coulson's team that we saw in the pilot.

His death was very poignant for me, but I also wonder if Coulson has inadvertantly created SHIELD's most threatening foe.

This episode gets five stars from me. Bravo.

Uh yeah. This thing is definitely The Hive. Honestly, didn't know it existed til you guys brought it up.

So there are 9 cities abandoned on Maveth and 9 worlds on the World Tree... perhaps the 9 cities were once a place where all 9 civilizations could congregate.

Ward knew what was going to happen beforehand- remember he was talking to Coulson about the change? How did he know that? How did he know it was going to be him?
