Why? What's wrong with making those kinds of changes in an adaptation?

For starters, the outrage is warranted. Male gaze is totally a thing, and it's really messed up.

And second, there's really no reason not to change it. The Daredevil movie wouldn't have been any better if Elektra's costume had been more comic-accurate, and really her costume in the comics is kind of ridiculous. It certainly doesn't add anything to the story, it's just eye candy. It's 2014, eye candy shouldn't be a priority in storytelling.

The world is changing, and media is changing with it. Elektra wearing panes wasn't the end of the world. It wasn't the end of anything. It was just pants. I thought it was an improvement, her original outfit is pretty hard to take seriously.
It only started with Elektra, but it quickly snowballed to each and every female character in a super hero film.

Now,don't get me wrong,I'm pretty much as conservative as it gets, but I don't see Wonder Woman or Ms Marvel in their classic costumes as some kind of subversive thing. It's OK for a "bathing suit" costume in one male oriented genre film/series,but not another?

That's also to say nothing of the multitude of unnecessary "shirtless" in each and every superhero film/series (and AOS is still counted in this) for the ladies.I've gone over this countless times in countless threads,so I won't continue with it here and derail this thread.

Okay. But please explain how that's a bad thing.

It's not okay in any genre. I don't know where you're getting that notion from.

And don't you think it's kind of messed up to declare superheores to be a male oriented genre? Kind of alienating to any women who might take a interest.

That's also to say nothing of the multitude of unnecessary "shirtless" in each and every superhero film/series (and AOS is still counted in this) for the ladies.

1: The objectification of men is not a systemic and institutionalized part of our culture the way the objectification of women is.

2: There's a huge difference between having one scene where a character isn't wearing a shirt within a movie where said character normally wears a practical outfit that covers most of their skin and allows for some semblance of dignity, and a character wearing a skimpy sexualized outfit throughout the majority of the film that is meant to be their defining look in the eyes of the audience. Captain America had one shirtless scene, but at least he wore actuarial clothes the rest of the time.

Fine.

I honestly don't see a problem with that. I like it when mythological beings show up on modern day earth wearing human clothes that look normal but contain references to the wearer's true nature in their design. I thought Loki looked great in his green and black suits. I think it emphasizes the air of mystery and wonder about them, like you know there's something awesome and terrifying about their true nature, which is entirely unlike ours, but their appearance will only hint at it and let us fill in the blanks ourselves. I usually think that's a lot more impressive than elaborate costumes.

Well it won't come across like that for Sif. It will just look like some budgetary issue if she's in some thrown-together civilian clothing. What possible reason (not in terms of storytelling but production reasons) is there for not having Sif in her movie costume? It already exists. It's not like it's going to cost anything.

I think while they've been filming CA:TWS or when they're filming Avengers: AOU, Marvel should film extra footage that they can use in the AOS show - whether it's of the SHIELD helicarrier or headquarters or anything else. In the 60s Batman TV show, after they made the theatrical movie, they reused shots of the Batcopter and Batboat, and it added to the TV series for later episodes made after the movie.

Not sure if this ever got posted (apologies if it has) Short little video interview with Clark Gregg via TV Guide a couple days ago:

Okay. But please explain how that's a bad thing.

What makes it a good thing?I'm watching ice skating on the Olympics right now.Are the female skaters covering their bare legs for fear that the guys watching are getting a "peep show"? I honestly don't get how the Super Hero genre has become so puritanical.
O

It is what it is.That's not saying woman can't enjoy the genre any more than a guy can't enjoy a Rom-com (aka "Chick-flick")
O

Having a few inches of skin showing around the thigh should not constitute a lack of dignity. Supergirl's traditional costume is no more undignified than the average high school cheerleader outfit. But,I'm sure it would be considered "sexualized" by the genre's new double standard.

Although the shirtless scenes are fleeting it isn't like any of the actors involved are ugly trolls, they're all attractive men hired in part because women will be more likely to want to see the films with them in it.

Not like Evans and Hemsworth are made to wear loose fitting cotton sweaters either, so someone please cry a river over the objectification of men!

I'm not lobbying for a camel-toe friendly Ms.Marvel costume but I wish we could get a semi accurate costumes for lady heroes without an outcry.

If you're all so ashamed of the female body go somewhere that burkas are the norm.

So many people keep bringing up The Leader, but he's the last person I want to see.Save him for a Hulk sequel where he belongs.Hulk doesn't have many great villains as it is.The excitement of seeing him for the first time should be reserved for a Hulk film, imo

Y! It's like wasting DS on Arrow :csad:

Maybe the Clairvoyant is....

:applaud:funny: I use to have this particular comic.

Batman is just an ordinary human and yet he can and has beaten Deathstroke, who's a super soldier, in a straight up fight. "Super soldier" gives you an advantage, but it doesn't mean that a human can never beat you.

:wow: What issue was this? The 1st time they fought,DS kicked Bats butt.

Is it possible someone is mixing up when *Batgirl* beat Deathstroke? Because she did, and its not even slightly transferable.

Arrow's great. I marathoned it and I have no regrets at all. As of now, Arrow is easily the superior Superhero television show to AOS. To be fair though, Arrow's on it's second season. AOS is still finding it's footing. It took Arrow at least about 6 episodes for me to be fully invested in it, and it had it's fair share of problems. But once it found it's stride it was great.

So far, what Arrow has done better than AOS is really create it's own superhero world. Their world-building has been much better. AOS right now still feels like it's living off the dregs of the filmverse, instead of naturally expanding on the film universe. However, that's to be expected. Arrow didn't have to deal with connecting to a film universe and AOS did, and AOS is getting better at this aspect as the show goes on.

However, I definitely wouldn't mind if AOS took some pointers from Arrow. Especially where action sequences are concerned. For it's budget, Arrow has GREAT action sequences.

Y! Arrow has some excellent fight scenes.

It's baffling to me that anyone thinks this is about being ashamed of the female body.

It has nothing to do with shame. That's a straw man argument if I've ever heard one. The problem is that her suit only exists to show off her body. That's not true of Thor or Cap or Iron Man. It's only function is to provide eye candy. THAT is the problem.

I don't want her bathing suit anywhere near the big screen. Have a costume that makes sense for someone who's a fighter, not a lifeguard.

I hope that Lorelei does have some kind of costume and not a downgraded civvies outfit in AOS. Same with Sif for that matter. She better wear her Thor costume and not show up in a black jumpsuit or the kinds of things people show up in for TV shows.

does this picture settle that?
