Why is that some movies and TV take something that should look so natural, like eyes, hair and nose on a real life or fictional person and make them look so artificial and distracting (for example, Benedict Cumberbatch’s hair in The Fifth Estate, Johnny Depp’s eyes and make up in Black Mass, Steve Carell’s nose and brow in Foxcatcher, etc.)

Is it a vanity thing on both the part of the actors and the makeup artists? Do some of the makeup artist just want their work to stand out as an ego thing? Do certain actors have in their contracts to make themselves still look recognizable? Is it a corporate decision? Do they think it looks cool? Do they think it’s supposed to look that way? Is it a marketing thing to grab people‘s attention?

They treat it like it’s some sort of creature feature type of thing where they’re made up like they’re some sort of movie monster, except that they are people that actually existed or if they’re fictional should look relatively normal in real life. Instead of human beings, they end up looking like some sort of weird homunculus resembling a person.

I’ve seen other films in TV do it in a way that’s not so distracting, so I don’t get why that’s still a thing for some of them. They shouldn’t have any excuse.
