AICN Interview w/ Ioan Gruffudd ("Galactus: A No-Show?")

^ You're probably right on about the spin-off which is what should be the focus of the SS and Galactus. They're doing it right.

I think so, too.
Keeping Galactus a peripheral element doesn't bother me at all.
I mean there's already so much going on.
Once I read that the whole Doom/Surfer scenario was being played out in this film, I was pretty certain Galactus would be a no-show.

I'm relieved they're not going to have the FF deal directly with Galactus.
And I still think we're going to get a glimpse of him.

Everytime I try and give this studio the benifit of the doubt they kick me in the freaking teeth. I honestly can't say I'm surprised that Galctus doesn't show up or won't as we know him. I'm not to mad about that, because i thought that they'll set him up for the 3rd one, but after the interview it looks like this movie isn't going to be as great or better then we all hoped.

From what Ioan is saying looks like FOX is going to try and wrap this one up to. I don't know about this bombing crap, but i think FOX is trying to kill the franchises because Marvel wants to finance their own films. FOX all but killed the X franchise by killing off 3 main characters.

My biggest new fear is this crap about the Surfer's power coming from his board. Why can't these people just leave wll enough alone? In their eyes it's either more cost effective to have Doom still his Surfboard as opposed to Doom creating a device to siphone off SS's power. I knew something was going to go wrong. i was holding my breath that I don't hear any bad news about this production after that nice teaser we got, but i can't say that I'm surprised.

"Galactus as a peripheral element"...I could live with that. It would be a much more pleasant adaption of him than Ultimate Marvel's rendition.

I think what we do "see" of Galactus will be relatively faithful to the original. Even if it's just a few flashes from the Surfer's memories.

Nokio, I think there will be at least one good thing in the movie: Doug Jones, who is always giving astonishing performances (like in the recent El Laberinto del Fauno) and was a really inspired casting choice for SS.

If I remember correctly, the "after the credits" X-men scene was filmed in secret with only the actual characters involved present to insure, as much as possible, that it would be a surprise.

Is it possible that they will include an after credits scene of Galactus approaching earth after the happy ending?

That's very possible and it's also very possible that people only know about that on a "need to know" basis.

And even if Ioan did know they were doing something like that, would he ruin the surprise by telling everyone in an interview several months before the film even opens?

Or hairdresser to the stars...

Swish. ;)

I'm thinking we might hear Galactus' voice in the mind of the Silver Surfer or something, perhaps giving him "final orders" or something at the end of the film?

What the point in posting articles that repost part of an interview that was already posted in another thread?
Sorry for this post.

Carp-Man: we get it.

Discuss it in Kathy's thread please. Thanks.

We also have to keep in mind that the writer (Payne) just did an interview with Wizard last month and he confirmed that Galactus is in the movie. So I'm confused by what this one actor is saying (as was mentioned above, Rothman also said Galactus would be present). I just hope this doesn't turn into another "Fox Mystery", where the writers tell us that Cyclops doesn't die and that there will be a 'ground-breaking' Phoenix Raptor manifestation--only for the fans to be bitterly dissapointed by the lies later.

*sigh*

Ioan shouldn't have said anything about this...now, the tide's gonna turn. LOL

Ok. Since I have been dragged over here. :woot: I want to see Galactus in the 3rd movie, but from the comments I have read, it makes sense to deal with him in a stand alone Surfer movie. I guess. I'd still like to see the FF do battle with him somewhere down the road.

well as some have said, Ioans comments could be smoke. You are correct, Rothman did say Galactus would make an appearence. In what way is still a mystery. His presence is felt ? WT?

I'd have to grab the physical magazine but I do recall the first sentence saying something to the effect of "Galactus is in the film. The question that fans have been wondering about is finally answered by Don Payne, etc." Or something like that.

Let's hope that Ioan doesn't know what he's talking about, and what the SFX department is designing is light years away from what he's aware of.

Something tells me that the actors aren't exactly privy to ALL of the information regarding the movie's production. For example: David Prowse in The Empire Strikes Back. ;)

I hope he's wrong :) Nothing would make me happier than seeing Galactus, if only at the end of the movie.

You know, at one point they were saying that Sentinels would have a "presence" in X3. And we know how that turned out: The body itself was shrouded in smoke and obscurity, but we did get a chance to see its head after all.

Even though I know what it means I thought it'd be helpful to define what this word "Presence" entails for the sake of discussion. Check this out:

American Heritage Dictionary - Cite This Source pres·ence (prěz'əns) Pronunciation Key
n.
1.) The state or fact of being present; current existence or occurrence.

2.) Immediate proximity in time or space.

3.) The area immediately surrounding a great personage, especially a sovereign.

4.) A person who is present.

5.) A person's bearing, especially when it commands respectful attention: "He continues to possess the presence, mental as well as physical, of the young man" (Brendan Gill).

6.) The quality of self-assurance and effectiveness that permits a performer to achieve a rapport with the audience: stage presence.

7.) A supernatural influence felt to be nearby.

Definitions 2,3 and 7 could easily apply to Galactus here, without showing us his full form. Much would depend on if they're going with Ultimate or 616, and if they are opting for Ultimate, that would be readily "felt" in surrounding objects like space matter.

I do not remember Payne saying anything, but I do remember Rothman saying he would make an appearance.

What happened to him?

Arguably, Prowse is most famous for playing the physical form of Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy. Although he spoke the dialogue during the production of the films, James Earl Jones overdubbed the character's voice in post-production, a fact which Prowse bears some resentment for towards Star Wars creator George Lucas, since he was never told that his voice was not going to be used. However, Lucas claims he wanted a 'deeper voice' (Lucas has stated that Darth Vader had to have a deep, reverberating voice) that Prowse could not provide and never intended to use Prowse's voice. In the 2004 documentary, Empire of Dreams, actress Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia Organa in the original trilogy films, quipped that they nicknamed Prowse "Darth Farmer" because of his un-intimidating West Country accent.
To Prowse, the most annoying incident came during the filming of The Empire Strikes Back. The major plot twist in Empire is the revelation of who Luke Skywalker's father is. In Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Skywalker is told by Obi-Wan Kenobi that his father was betrayed and murdered by a young pupil named Darth Vader. However, in Empire, Vader himself reveals that he is actually Skywalker's father. According to Empire director Irvin Kershner, the shooting script had a false page with Vader's dialogue implicating Kenobi as the murderer of Luke's father, but at the time, only he and producer Gary Kurtz were privy to the knowledge that Darth Vader and Luke's father were the same person. Moments before the scene was filmed, Mark Hamill, the actor playing Luke, was taken aside privately and told the truth by Kershner, who encouraged him to ignore the dialogue Prowse was speaking and "use your own rhythm compared to what he's doing." In later years, Prowse claimed he would sometimes deliver joke versions of his lines in Empire and Return of the Jedi.
Prowse lobbied to be included in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, reprising his role as the fully-armored Darth Vader, but his requests fell on deaf ears. Hayden Christensen, who played Anakin Skywalker in Episode III as well as its predecessor, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, says he begged Lucas to have the costume designers build a suit that would fit him despite the fact that he is fully five inches shorter than Prowse.
Prowse continues to associate himself with his role in the Star Wars films and is involved in the convention circuit. Despite this, he has not been included in recent reunions of the original cast, such as those for the Empire of Dreams documentary and the 2005 Vanity Fair cover.
Recently he played a small cameo role in Star Wars fanfilms Order of the Sith: Vengeance and its sequel Downfall - Order of the Sith - alongside Jeremy Bulloch and Michael Sheard. These fanfilms were made in England in support of Save the Children.

Wow, I didn't know all that. Very interesting.

Well, again let's hope Ioan doesn't know what he's talking about--at least in regards to Galactus. As far as Doug Jones--at least he knows they might pull an "Earl" on him. ;)

Ain't Wikipedia grand? I don't know how I survived without it.

Oh, right. Google. Silly me. :p

Damn, I might actually be surprised with something I DON'T KNOW about this movie....It'll be like a real movie this time.....lol

Hah...well it's only February. We'll know everything by May...everything.

I'm holding out hope that this concept will be fleshed out well enough to sustain the film--and we won't miss Galactus as a result.

Thanks to Anubis for the scan.
