The first, 3rd, and last Elm Street movies were all fantastic. That was a very, very poor choice for comparion. Friday the 13th I might have been able to give you, but even those were all just sort of camp fun (pun intended).
Which is the same thing F4 was. It wasnt trying to be deep in anyway, it was just trying to be family fun, and it was. And critics say alot of stupid things. Roger Ebert hated Burtons Batman and loved Shumachers. Does that mean that Shumachers were superior? Hell no, it means Ebert is an idiot.
And they got much more than the powers right. Ben is the tortured man who hates what's happened to him. Doom is the malevolent, power hungry mad scientist he started as. Reed is a genius. Johnny's characterization has been PERFECT.
