Ain't It Cool News interview with Dan Slott

You also have to remember that Marvel's editorial department is in a perennial "teenager" mode in that they are willing to compromise their core ideals in order to "look cool" to a mainstream that will never accept them. They may want Hulk to seem more viscious and murderous to appeal to "new fans", although "new fans" are an optical illusion as most people who aren't interested in comics find entertainment elsewhere, and those that are have a clear idea of what characters should be as they'd read 'em so long.

Marvel's that kid in the corner, wearing black leather, piercings, and a few rub-on tattooes, in order to be "one of the cool kids". They lack the maturity to go, "yeah, we do superheroes, and that entails some suspensions and some non-realism at moments, but damn it, that is who I am and I love superheroes!"

Part of wolverines character is to be a killer but thats never been a part of the hulks.

Though i think you're probably right about those not privvy to the comics, many many people have seen the old tv show which made a distinct point of hammering home that the hulk is not a killer.
You think? The Hulk TV series came out a long time ago. I imagine a good portion of the primary demographic that the movies are aimed at might not have seen it.

Why not? Wolverine's a killer and the X-Men movies sell quite well. Plus, I'm inclined to believe that the majority of moviegoers, who aren't privvy to the specifics of the Hulk's comic issues like we are, are a hell of a lot more likely to side with Bendis' camp and assume that, by his very nature, the Hulk must've killed in the past. I'd bet that most people already consider the Hulk a killer, no matter how little evidence there is to back them up.

Nah, I dont think so. I dont think the general public assumes either way really. They just see big guy who destroys things. Not big guy who destroys things and kills people. Hes never been shown like that. The Bill Bixby series, animated versions, and the Hulk movie all show him to not be a killer. Sorry Corp, you be wrong.

To be fair as slott said he hasn't killed anyone yet on camera.

Given that bendis, who obviously wants to make hulk a killer, only implied it (admittedly strongly, but there is wiggle room) I have some faith in the editorial dept given the clout wot bendis wields but he still couldn't make it explicit.

Ah. I'm thinking of the teenagers and college students, who seem to be where the big money's at, since they're the ones who keep going back to watch the movies over and over again. I know I do if it's a comic movie I'm really excited for and turns out to be good on my first viewing, and I also know that I myself haven't even seen that much of the Hulk TV series. I've only seen the odd episode here and there on the Sci Fi Channel and that TV-movie where Thor co-starred.

And you be ugly, so we're even. :p

Animated versions of everything show the heroes to not be killers, including the aforementioned Wolverine, who we know is a killer. Plus, destruction automatically implies killing to most people. I agree that the Hulk's not a killer and shouldn't be, but I doubt the general populace would assume the same.
