I don't even think it should've been a fair match. Given that Zod is bred to be a soldier, and assuming that Jor El has been bred to be a scientist, Zod should've handed Jor El his backside. Jor El should've won that fight using his brains, IMO.
My theory has been military scientist [maybe how he came to kno Zod? How else might they have found each other when the only other thing they agree on is about the one thing?]

This interview seems to be making the rounds on other forums has it made its way here? (I imagine its pretty old). I hate awkward interviews but still thought I'd share it. By the way I hate the interviewer he just seems like a Grade-A c**k and has recently taken over a big part in the radio buisness here and has lost a lot of listeners so it seems the British public also aren't fans.

I thought that at first too...then the more I thought about things in the movie, I started thinking about the way that Jor-El was living. He was working against the status quo of Krypton where you are bred for one thing. Who is to say he didn't only go against the Kryptonian way by managing to have a live birth of a child with his wife and to build a spaceship capable to wormhole it's way to Earth...but what if he also taught himself to be a bad ass warrior to protect his family if someone came to stop him from doing the other things.

I think that's a great idea. I have to agree with Jim El in wishing the film actually gave us this explanation instead of none whatsoever.

Also guys I would stay away from Badass Digest when it comes to DC Comics films, Devin Faraci is a known Marvel troll and he runs his websites like echo chambers, everybody has to agree with him or else you get fired or banned.

I like your theory too. Again, I wish the movie would have documented why Jor-El was so bad a$$.

Cavill comes across fine to me...the interviewer and his crew are a-holes and I wouldn't waste another second of my life listening to anything they did.

He's a *****e bag, over here he's on crappy TV shows that are aimed at teeny boppers. I thought Henry actually did well at keeping it together, the interviewer offered nothing, his questions were stupid and you could tell he was just trying to poke fun at it all.

Jor-El is Krypton's Chief Scientist. Krypton, a world of flying monsters, ray guns and space ships. With their being a hint of Zod and him being at least associates I don't think that a man so strong minded as well as being possibly the most intelligent on the planet, wouldn't know some ancient self defence techniques, which could catch a very arrogant man like Zod off guard.

I think that is one of the little nuances in Zod character, is that he keeps underestimating his opponents due to how powerful he is. Jor-El showed him up a few times in the opener and yet he still kept underestimating him.

Ahh I get you it's like because of his genetics he's over confident and arrogant. I like that.

I think that's a bit of a stretch. Knowing self defense techniques and flat out flooring a genetically engineered General are two different things. Honestly? I would've had a much easier time buying it if the fight felt more intense. Like Jor-El's sheer love and care for his son saw him defeat Zod as opposed to a robotic takedown of the guy.

Very well thought out. I just wish the movie could have "documented" what you theorize.

This kinda all reminds me, am I the only person who'd love to see a movie or something about Jor-El and Zod leading up to the opening of MOS?

I do agree about your robotic statement. But at the same time Kryptonians have been portrayed a lot as a robotic type race, almost like vulcans where emotions don't usually come into it.

Example would be Lara at Zod's sentencing or the end of Krypton. Kryptonians have this mechanical way of going about life. And Jor-El is so smart that he would understand easily the "mechanics" of fighting techniques and put them flawlessly to use if he needed to against an unsuspecting egomaniac like Zod.

But I do see your side, especially how the movie keeps mentioning Kal has to have a choice, and MOS version of Kryptonians are so pigeonholed into what they are.

You speak pure sense. There is a huge difference between teaching yourself something at home and practising it in the real world as career for decades and the muscle memory that creates. Add on top of that, all of the genetic traits that Zod should have as a born and bred warrior - superior reflexes, sight, strength, speed - and Jor-El, no matter his private training, has no chance whatsoever at defeating Zod in the way he did. It would have been better if he fought like a wounded animal, losing, but putting up a brave fight in order to buy his son the precious seconds he needs to launch. It would have been better if Zod's arrogance made him misunderstand Jor-El's purpose in the launch. Thinking that the ship is for the whole family instead of just for the son.

I'd watch that. Imagine a short created just for fan service, with Jor-El and Zod side by side cleaning house. With plenty of Faora thrown in, for course.

DVD bonus. Another built-in comic.

Or a motion comic with the same actors/actresses ;)

When a movie has a lighter tone and **** hits the fan, it makes you sit up and notice. If a film is gloomy throughout and continues down that trajectory, it descends into monotony.

This has been my main issue with the idea that all genre films need to be dark & serious. When that sort of tone is so prevalent and weighty, scenes that really need it lose their impact. It crosses the line from drama to melodrama sharply, and never looks back.

^ Yeah. I think Toy Story 2's lighter approach allowed it to explore themes of aging, neglect, and identity crisis.

I think if TS2 went "the dark route" it wouldn't be as powerful. I feel like MOS should let the gun cool before shooting the dark bullet.

Though I don't think MOS is quite as dark as people are saying it is.

I don't think it was necessarily dark, but it definitely felt really depressing and gloomy. The only light presence was Diane Lane who seemed high throughout.

I'm from the UK too. I can't stand him. He's almost 30 but you can tell he is trying his best to try and be best buddies with anyone who is "hip" at the time. When One Direction pretty much exploded on to the scene he kept claiming Harry Styles was his best buddy. I don't say this about anyone but he is somebody who I just can not stand.

Apparently when he had Idris Elba on recently he slagged Cavill off again.

"Joyless" seems to be used to describe the film.

The movie implies that they were friends who drifted apart .
During an earlier time in their friendship,
They might have agreed about many other things.
We will never know .

The movie wasn't dark, it just took itself seriously.

Really wow? I don't really get what he expected from Cavill tbh. He didnt ask him anything really, allhis questions were stupid and pretty much pointless. people want to see challenging interesting questions. not genetic questions that really have no bearing on the film. Yeah he's a major pain in the ass.
