Your grandfather grew up in the world of segregation so it's very possible that he holds some stereotypical views though you shouldn't make that assumption based on his opinion of a sports figure alone.
I'm from a multi-ethnic background, I abhor racism, and I think that the very concept of race is ultimately pseudo-science that has done nothing but cause the world pain. I all that...and I can't stand Tiger Woods. I often "boo" him and wish he would lose. If you would assume that I do that because of Tiger's multi-ethnic background, you would be wrong.
I don't like Tiger mostly because I hate golf. There was a dramatic upsiwing in mainsteam golf coverage once Tiger came along. I want to headbutt the TV whenever I hear him referred to as the "world's best athlete". Until I see Tiger tackle Ladainian Tomlinson, execute a crossover dribble & hit a three pointer over Kevin Garnett , run over Ivan Rodriguez to tag home plate, or make Chuck Liddell tap out, he's not a real athlete. Skill does not always equal athleticism.
Secondly, I hate to hear Tiger Woods referred to as a trail blazer, often in the same breath as Jackie Robinson. Robinson got death threats, hatred from his own teammates, had pitchers throw at his head, racial epithets thrown his way and the list goes on. Tiger comes from a wealthy background and rose to national prominence after African American athletes had been featured in American sports for decades. He endured NOTHING like Jackie Robinson's obstacles. The fact that it took golf until the 1990s integrate and the fact that Tiger's ascension was hailed as a great thing by the media when what should have been said is "It took the PGA long enough!" leaves a bad taste in mouth.
Anti-Tiger, Anti-Golf rant over. I'm sure I offended some golfers. Well, get the PGA off Sportscenter and I won't have to gripe & moan about it.
