Am I the only one bothered by the term "people of color"?

I can't bring myself to get very worked up about someone calling me a "cracker", but I do think, if you don't want to be called a racial slur, you don't get to use one against someone else.

I see this term pop up more and more and it's always struck me as an odd term. But it seems to have become widely accepted, and the troubling connotations that come with it aren't going away.

I mean, it seems to essentially divide Americans into two factions, white, and non-white. As if white people and non-white people are monolithic identities. In the case of white people, it seems to imply a people devoid of any culture of ethnic identity. We're not even a shade. We're just the norm. Even if it's meant well (I assume it is) it's basically the term colored all over again. And yet I see it liberally used by progressives.

Is anyone else bothered by the term?

Aren't we ALL people of color. Some are Brown, some are dark brown, some light brown, some are dark pink, some are pink, etc....

Ok which slurs can be typed out in full on here? Make a post with your list and don't limit yourself to just ones aimed at white people.

Well there is ****, ****, ****, ****, ****, *******, *****, ******, ******, *******, ******, *******, *******, ****** and of course ******

I may be forgetting a few. Hope that helps

We're all people of different shades and colors ,so in that sense the term "people of color" is pointless. It was basically created as a means of distinguishing what was consider "White" from those who were considered "Non-white". Its old and out of date.

In all honesty I haven't heard the term used in any context in quite awhile, given its problematic baggage. You'd be foolish to say it hear in LA, but who knows about the rest of the country.

Anyone who gets fired up about being called a cracker is insane........here is a nugget, another slur against white people is calling them a "Jeff". I have a friend named Jeff. Intellectual type, all PC sensitive and that crap. Everytime I see him, it's "What up ya Jeff", "Hey ya lil Jeff", "You ******* Jeff". I can't help it.

I have never heard that one. I know Becky is basically slang for any white chick.

Cool! Now which slurs should continued to be used for black, gay, and or Jewish people? Which ones are they insane for getting fired up about. Come on people, it's a little odd the only slurs people are defending are the ones aimed at white people. Roll out your lists and remember it's no big deal, they really shouldn't get upset about it unless their just being crazy. Right? Go for it.

I love your campaign to outlaw the "C-word", :lmao: , but I can't help when any white person gets bent out of shape about it and think they are just really trying to even the playing field in the PC world. They can't stand the thought that someone can get away with a "racial slur" when they will get in trouble if they speak the words running through their head among minorities. It's a load of BS

It might be hard for some to grasp but it is possible for people of any size, age, sex, and color to be offended by being called derogatory names. Maybe you've never constantly been called names and told to get over it, maybe you have thicker skin and don't mind it, that doesn't mean everyone else is or has to be like you and just accept it with a smile as it continues.

Nope, more than likely your just a pissed off white person that thinks they should be able to use the N-word. The whole PC police thing is almost always a front for somebody who is messed up in the head. Kind of like those anti-gay GOP people who get busted for tapping on guys feets in public restrooms

White yes, someone who wants to use the N word no. I'm just someone who knows how words can hurt and the damage they can do while people look the other way and think nothing of it.

The PC Police is a front for the loudest mouths trying to enforce their views and opinions onto others.

I don't think anyone should be able to go around saying racial slurs without consequences, but I don't think slurs against white people should be excused just because of white privilege. I don't think bigotry of any kind should be given a pass, no matter who it's coming from and who is receiving it. It's not so much that the word "cracker" is offensive all by itself, it's the intentions of the user.

I would have fun with you lol

Look, I'm a die hard hater of political correctness and am definitely in the "lets move from the past" camp when it comes to racial issues. Most everyone is a crybaby to me anymore. But I'm not about to call a black American the N-word, a reminder of the past from which we should move on from.

You can call me a cracker, a Jeff, a Becky(white homosexual dig?), any of that crap and I'm not going to bat an eye. Lets face it, the white race is the only one that hasn't endured a mass atrocity that slurs were attached too throughout history. However, with that said, you want to tell me that "all whites at racist", "all white's should feel guilt", and those that bring up race as an excuse for this and that at the drop of a dime. I'll look those people in the eye and tell them to F themselves and not in a kind manner.

I beg to differ. Europeans have called each other plenty of insulting slurs.

WOP and Dagos for Italians.
Micks and Paddys for the Irishs
Crouts for the Germans
Greeks who in the 1920s fled (genocide from the Turks) to the Southern US were called Olive Nwords.

*Kraut.......for Germans. I know this because my grandma and grandpa were straight off the boat and called "krauts" after their arrival. They told me this as a child. They shrugged it off and carried on. And they were fine for it. My grandpa actually said it was almost a due payment for being in the best country in the world, at the time anyway. Not like the little whiner crybabies of today that check in and starting *****ing two minutes after they become a citizen. The N-word is a completely different deal.

Alabama, Which Requires ID to Vote, Stops Issuing New Licenses in Majority-Black Counties

I'm sure this has nothing to do with race at all, just those pesky budget cuts

As someone who believes in a required ID to vote and has pushed for free ID distribution to end the argument once and for all, this is wrong on many levels if true.

If only we had some sort of Voting Rights Act... oh wait. Thanks Republican Supreme Court justices.

I've seen this comment in this thread in a few places. What is "white privilege" anyway? can someone please explain? Yes I'm a white guy.
But have NO idea what this statement means as I for one have never had or experienced any privilege for being white.

thanks,
DK

I am a white European immigrant in the United States. I have been stopped a few times by the police. Routine inspection, minor traffic violations, what have you.

I speak English without a distinct accent. Never except once has the officer in one of these instances asked about my nationality even though my license marks me a foreigner. The one who did ask, asked me what country I was from. He said "oh, I hear it's nice over there" and told me to drive safe.

I even asked a couple of times if they wanted to see my documentation, but they politely declined and sent me on my way.

My Hispanic friends have rather different stories about what transpires when they get pulled over.

My black friends fear for their lives when they get pulled over.

White privilege is **** white people take for granted.
