Am I the only one on this planet who still doesn't have a clue who Dane Cook is?

He's a very overrated comedian. IMO.

You're one up on me. Not only do I not know who he is... I don't know what he looks like. I figured he was one of those booted off American Idol (or some other reality program) 'stars'.

He's a comedian. He's been in a few films, "Waiting" being the only one that comes to mind at this moment. His act consists of saying random, bizarre things and acting like a complete spazz which somehow makes some people think he's a genius.

I think he's a genius but I'm probably one of his most rabid fans. He's really hit or miss with people but hey, that's comedy.

He's not bad, but most (okay, pretty much all) of his humor is delivery. Acting unnecessarily intense and coked up while describing ordinary situations, stuff like that. If you've never seen him before it's hilarious, but IMO, after seeing 2 or 3 of his specials it wears thin.

I had a friend give me a burned CD of his old material early last year. Then, the same friend INSISTED that I listen to his new double CD, so he burned those for me too...

Cook's a GREAT storyteller for sure! Plus, he does it in an original way, and he is well-trained in his mannerisms. He's pretty funny but (as expected) his material can get raunchy sometimes.

...then BLAMO! he's EVERYWHERE! First he hosted SNL, which might have been the only good epsiode last year. Then, he's doing every talk show, new show on showtime(hbo?) this summer...plus, a couple of movies in the works now

Check out some of John Leguizamo's live one-man shows, particularly the HBO specials he's done. If you like guys who can act spazmodic and be funny while still having some really fresh, original material, he's your man.

Oh, JL is amazing as well. The reason Dane appeals to me is that my best friend and I speak with the same "sass"(for lack of a better word) that Dane does. Not the crazy mannerisms but his delivery.

I remember seeing him on Comedy Central a few years ago and thought he was pretty funny, have both Harmful if Swallowed and Retaliation on my iPod, I think he's pretty funny. He's in no way a thinking man's comedian and I don't think he ever tries to give that impression, more observational. He has just blown up recently, getting big time publicity, however, he's been in the business for something like 16 years. He's paid his dues and people are finally starting to notice him.

I have no idea who he is and I really don't care

Lewis Black > Dane Cook

Lewis Black and Dane Cook are two very different comedians, you can't really compare the two and it's not fair too. Dane Cook could be compared to Jerry Seinfeld or Greg Geraldo (first two the popped in my head).

I agree completely, I love having all his skits on my mp3 player as well. He's got stand-up on HBO in Sept if you wanna check that out.

Lewis Black is a genius. I like Dave Attell's stand-up work as well.

Dane Cook really doesn't have much in common with Seinfeld, who is a much more cerebral comedian. Cook is more visual like Steve Martin or Jim Carrey, even though I don't find as much depth in his material as those two.

I remember last yr on the hype there were so many hypsters with Dane Cook quotes in there sig.

I've seen some of his stand up specials, thought they were okay, but at the same time very overrated as a comedian.

Actually, Leguizamo is a performance artist rather than a full-blown comedian.

How much have you heard? Like most things; the popular stuff is usually the least funny.

I've heard of him but I'm not a big fan of his work. I preferr comics like Patton Oswald, Zach Galifianakis and David Cross.

i saw him on u tube .. hmmmm.. he screams alot and basically isnt that funny .. yup thats it for me.

Yes, those three are great as well.

I've heard a couple of his CD's. Maybe I think too much about what he's really saying and just don't find him all that funny as a result. He's humorous at times but I really find him to be overrated.

Ah, the "nerd" comics. They're pretty good. David Cross is a comedic genius.

Jerry Seinfeld is not a cerebral comedian, most of his material is just general observations, doesn't require a lot of thought. That's not to say I don't think he's funny, just don't find a lot of thought in his comedy. I find George Carlin and Dennis Miller more as cerebral comics. That's just the way I'd classify them though.
