I guess flexibility allows you the ability to grow Hulk-size hands.
Ross Andru created the Punisher and illustrated the original clone saga. He had a pretty long run in the 70's. Themanofbat was around 35 at this time.

I don't see any of those things, at least in that pic. The faces aren't even visible under the masks, the muscles look fine for superheroes, and the anatomy looks fine, with the only possible problem being Spidey's wrist, but Spidey is supposed to have superhuman flexibility so that's also reasonable I'd say.
Thank you Jewhob. I'm certainly not slamming them as Dan seems to think. As a matter of fact I owned a number of Ross Andru drawn spidey issues in my youth.

the Ron Garney is kinda slim pickins but,

No, I think they were very good for their time.
I also think top level comic art has progressed/improved since then.

In your opinion.
I'm with Random Havoc. I just don't have the tastes for older styled artwork. I appreciate it for it's time, but I don't consider it good these days. Unlike some of the older posters, I have no nostalgia to help me appreciate the quality.

In addition to the items mentioned, Ross Andru was also the artist for the original Spider-Man vs. Superman (which I believe was the first DC/Marvel super hero crossover), Aunt May & Doc Ock's wedding, the original Tarantula, Harry first becoming the Goblin, Mindworm(!), Spider-Mobile, the 3rd Goblin saga (Dr. Hamilton), & Pete's first proposal to MJ. It was a great run!
And get off TMOB's lawn, too!![]()
That he did. His and Waid's run on Captain America was great.Loved the suit....HATED the colors.
Ron Garney drew a hell of a Cap.

Good for his time. But even look at the shading style used, just doesn't stack up to today.

Amen. Get a colorist using modern coloring techniques on those images and it'd be pretty tough to single them out as "dated" art.
Stop being that guy.
If the late Ross Andru and Gil Kane had been frozen, Captain America-style, in a block of ice, and thawed out today, ANY book would be LUCKY to have them! Look at George Perez or Alan Davis-- these guys have been in the industry for decades-- and DECADES of GREATNESS! Their styles have stayed CONSISTENTLY good-- in the cases these giants, they've even improved and refined! And I don't know of a SINGLE writer working in the industry today that wouldn't KILL work with them.
Your position-- while rooted in your personal taste-- is OBJECTIVELY, horribly, horribly, horribly off base. Feel the way you feel-- and for your own private universe you can be right. But out here in the real world, you're 100% wrong.
Since Ditko left Spider-Man, for the longest time John Romita Sr., Gil Kane, and Ross Andru were THE gold standard. Was their work great then? ABSOLUTELY! Is it STILL GREAT NOW? HELL, YEAH!
Their art Spider-Man TRANSCENDS time. It is the mark that modern Spider-Man art strives to hit with every following generation of artists. It's an exclusive club that some of our talented modern day artists are honored to join-- NOT look back on as dated relics. That's crazy talk.
Art from those three artists is PERFECT and TIMELESS. And PERFECT never goes out of style.

Oh man, that's quite a sermon, but doesn't exactly come across as objective... at all.

Even if you argue that John Romita's art was relatively simple, the fact is that he at least has a basic understanding of perspective and anatomy, unlike many so called "dynamic" artists of today. I don't care how action packed your art is, if your human characters' skulls look like they belong to a Grey with gigantism, we have a problem.
