Annie Release Set For Christmas Day 2014
By THE DEADLINE TEAM | Wednesday February 27, 2013 @ 9:43am PST
Sony said when it announced that Quvenzhané Wallis will play the lead role in Annie, the reimagining of the stage musical being directed by Will Gluck, that it planned a winter holiday 2014 release. Now it has booked the pic for December 25, 2014. The slate is still pretty bare for that date, with only Foxs Night At The Museum 3 claiming a place so far during the frame. Gluck also is rewriting the current script, revising a screenplay written by Emma Thompson and rewritten by Aline Brosh McKenna based on the musical, which is based on the Little Orphan Annie comic strip. He is producing with James Lassiter, Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith via Overbrook Entertainment, along with Shawn Jay Z Carter, Jay Brown and Tyran Ty Ty Smith through Marcy Media. The pic will shoot later this year.
Will this be a period piece like the original or a more modern & contemporary version?
Justin Timberlake As Daddy Warbucks in Annie Remake?
Posted on 3.19.13 by Alex Corey
The New York Post is reporting that Hollywood sources believe actor/musician Justin Timberlake (The Social Network) is being considered for the role of Daddy Warbucks in the upcoming remake of Annie.
Annie is the story of a young orphan during the Great Depression, based upon a comic strip called Little Orphan Annie from 1924. The story was made into a Broadway musical in 1977 with great success and it eventually spawned two film adaptations (in 1982 and 1999).
The New York Post also writes that a rep from Sony said the claim is Not true.
So why not drop it there? A big reason film is that the film is being produced by Will Smith and Jay-Z. The latter worked with Justin Timberlake on the current hit song Suit and Tie and the two are said to be going on tour together soon. This is why the claim sounds plausible, despite what the Sony rep said.
The Daddy Warbucks role was last played by Victor Garber in the 1999 Disney version.
Would you like to see Justin Timberlake in this role?
It was announced last month that the role of Annie will be played by Oscar-nominee Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild).

Taye Diggs as Daddy Warbucks (women of all ages will see the movie in droves).
If they absolutely have to go older, maybe Hinton Battle. I don't see them casting a white actor to play opposite a black Annie. Not that I would mind, but the Marxist anti-racism lobby would be crying foul about colonial privilege and what not.
I can see it. If they're doing their own thing with it. That version of Daddy Warbucks might add that "cool, he's like Dodger but older" kind of vibe. Which is basically an orphan being taken in by the coolest foster parent or adoptive parent or mentor one can imagine.
I bumped into Taye Diggs once. It was wonderful.
"Like Dodger but older?"
We need to Daddy Warbucks to be a pickpocket now?![]()
I never said pick pocket. I said cool and hip. With Justin it seems they are taking a cooler and more hip take on the character. Basically, as an orphan - the dream/fantasy would be to have someone more like Timberlake as a foster parent than the classic Annie foster parent type figure. As an orphan/adoptee, that's partly why I always related to Oliver Twist, Peter Pan, Hook, and later on August Rush the most with how the parental figures and mentors seemed, albeit just at first. It's not reality, but it certainly dives into the fantasy of the situation which many have. And if that casting is true or partly, that seems to be around what they're thinking as well.

I saw him one time for real when he was filming something at Toronto's train station. Looks even better in person than he does on camera. Too bad he and Idina don't have any children together; their collective genetics could save us all from the Legacy Virus when it hits in 2031.
To be fair, when the Artful Dodger grew up, he probably became a hedge fund manager.
To me that was only something Dodger did. I can see how that could be a view to somebody who wasn't orphaned. To me he just freedom and the joys of being free and pick-pocketing was just something that he did. Plus it was being around others who easily understood you. Not many orphans/adoptees feel like people who grew up with their biological parents will fully understand what it's like. So meeting somebody "like you" - and not just that, but the epitome of free spirited - there's always just something fantastical about that. As an orphan/adoptee, being taken under the wing by someone like that was always intriguing because of what he represented.
But yeah, I can see the point of the rest and why that would make it different.
