Ant-Man and The Wasp Ant-Man and the Wasp - Box Office Discussion

Yup. I’d love to see it at least stay north of 30 but I wouldn’t bet on it.

$5.8 million Wednesday, an (ouch) 42% drop. Most of the rest of the field had less harsh falls. $98.7 million total, so it will pass 100 today.

i still see it getting 200mill domestic that should be the benchmark for this film since the first made 180mill domestic not bad the budget is 162mill so it would get a 3rd film i believe if it gets 600mill worldwide

I'm sure we'll get a 3rd film.

But I guess the question is how much of Scott Lang we will see in Avengers 5 or 6.

So what exactly happened? The film had massive press and a lot of folks wanting to see this after Infinity War.

Did some over-hype it? I honestly thought it'd open near to $100 million. I hope that it will have legs and finish with 700 million worldwide while crossing 200 domestically.

Nothing went wrong. The film just opened up in a crowded summer market on a holiday weekend. There was just no other perfect windows for the film to continue being #1 on multiple weekends like other past MCU films. Marvel likely knew competition would eat at its OW take so they set expectations at around $75 million, which it hit fairly easily and was a nice enough increase from the first film to be happy with.

This was always going to be more frontloaded than the original, didn't matter the release date because it's a sequel. I'm just hoping for atleast 200 domestic

200 domestic looks like the over/under right now. If I had to bet today I’d take the over, but there’s a lot of competition out and the moviegoing public has already laid out a record amount of money this year. We’ll see.

I predicted 600-650 WW and I’m still comfortable with that.

I voted 650-700. Looks like I overestimated things but hopefully this at least crosses 600 WW.

Good Thursday number. 60ish% still likely. There's some competition this weekend. I'm intrigued to see how Skyscraper performs. It looks highly generic but he has a cross-demo appeal that is unique.

Since it's The Rock, I could see it overperforming from what I've seen of tracking. I'd do a jig if AMATW did $30M. A jig I tell you!

According to Deadline, Skyscaper is looking at only a $19-21 million OW; AM&W is looking at around $30-32 million. That wouldn't be a bad drop, especially for a summer movie in a crowded market.

I hope you get to do your jig!

BOM projection:

Hotel Transylvania 3- 45M
Skyscraper - 34M
Ant-Man and the Wasp - $32.1 M

Is it possible there's also or simply just a huge lack of interest in the characters Ant-Man and the Wasp from general audiences?
I think audiences will be pretty selective on superhero films, Marvel films, and certain characters.

I will dance TWO jigs if it hits 32.:jd: :jd:

My daughter and I have seen it twice so far....my wife absolutely refuses to see any movie the first week....she bought tickets for all of us to see it tomorrow. :)

+1 yes that is quite possible.

Yep, I think us Marvel fans can get a bit too overconfident and cocky sometimes. Not every Marvel, Marvel Studios, and Superhero film is going to be all that big of a success or a success at all.

Looks to be right.... just look at the number of views in the antman threads compared to IW or JL.......

yeah i saw skyscaper projections went from 34mill to 21mill for the weekend must not be that good so antman can do over 30 mill then

I think the reception of Ant-Man and the Wasp is within expectation; they are probably B list superheroes at best (unlike Spider-Man) and this movie really has very little to do with Infinity War, nor did it get any cameo from the Avengers either (compared with Thor Ragnarok & Civil War, who got a lot of help). Marvel knew this, and they gave this sequel a moderate budget and set their predictions low, and AMATW managed to meet the goals that were set for them. It doesn't have Solo's outrageous budget (300+ mil) nor Justice League's hype, and in a year where MCU got 2 movies that grossed over one billion, I think a small performer like this movie is exactly what they need.

Did it? I didn't see much hype at all. The promotional material (and the movie itself tbh) were all quite pedestrian.

Has it turned a profit yet? What if, and humor me on this, it does not turn a profit? Or at least makes less than "Ant-Man" domestically and worldwide? Would Marvel Studios still want to make an Ant-Man 3? Would it really be such a bad thing if we never get an Ant-Man 3?

We don't know if it will turn in a profit until after its theatrical run is finished, but I don't see why it won't. As for the sequel, I think it's too early to make assumption yet but I believe a third movie to finish it as a trilogy would be something that Marvel will definitely do eventually.
